UNITY AT ST. MOTHER GUERIN PARISHfrom Craig Kamptner, Director of Music Ministry

Many things have changed in church—from no hymnals, to no lectors, to no altar servers—but one thing that hasn’t changed is the unity shown when it comes to the peace greeting. I am amazed at each mass at what transpires during this time. I look out from the piano and I see people from across the church waving their hands to be sure others who are there see them waving the peace greeting to them. People watching the 10:30 Mass online write “Peace” to others watching online, in the comments section under the Facebook feed of the Mass.

We have had many changes in our lives in the last ten months. I feel that what is constant is our Faith in God that he will guide us through these times.

Giving the peace greeting as we do is a great healing for our world. Let us continue showing we are one in Christ.

MASS FOR THE PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN

Paul Fairbanks reads at the special Mass for the protection of unborn children on Friday, January 22 at St. Celestine to remember the 47th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and pray for an end to abortion.

This weekend, we kick off our Archdiocese of Chicago Annual Catholic Appeal. Many of our parishioners

have already received a mailing from Cardinal Cupich. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: Come, follow me...and bring hope to the world. The theme was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to come follow Jesus in order to bring hope to the world.

I will speak to you at all the Masses asking you to generously support the Appeal. Through this, we together join Christ in his great work, by helping parishes and schools in need, supporting programs of faith formation, and those that promote justice, peace, and respect for life. But we also reach out to the world, to bring hope to people who suffer natural disasters, famine, homelessness and war. All of this makes a difference because it is the work of Christ.

Our parish goal this year is $47,551 and after we reach our goal, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct an in–pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response to our Annual Catholic Appeal.

May God bless you and St. Mother Theodore Guerin Parish!

In prayer,

Fr. Paul

FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God.

The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We

One form of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass is the traditional Confiteor, or “I confess,” a prayer that was formerly prayed by the priest alone at the foot of the altar, but which is now prayed by the entire assembly. The Confiteor is at once personal—“I confess”—and communal, prayed aloud, together. We recognize that sin does not just separate us from God; sin comes between us and others, isolating us. We acknowledge that sin has many dimensions, individual and communal: sins of thought, sins of speech, sins of action, sins of omission. Sin is not something that happens to us; sin is something we do. In the Confiteor, we take responsibility for our own

actions. The repeated insistence on our “fault,” with the ritual gesture of striking the breast, an ancient sign of penitence, is not meant to lower our self-esteem. Rather, it acknowledges our human instinct to transfer the blame whenever we can (“The devil made me do it!”). This prayer stops us short. We take responsibility for ourselves, our actions, our failure to act. Then we cry out to God in those ancient words, Kyrie, eleison—Lord, have mercy. For the sinner who repents, there is mercy. This truth is at the heart of our faith, and it is where the Mass, our feast of faith, begins.

also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ON UNANSWERED QUESTIONS, CHILDREN’S GAMES, AND PROPHETS AMONG US

On the third Sunday of Advent, the Gospel passage had the religious elite of the day

questioning John the Baptist. “Who are you?” the priests and Levites begin. John answers, “I am not the Christ.” They continue: “…Are you Elijah?”

John responds, “I am not.” Then they ask, “Are you the Prophet?” John says no again. Finally, they ask, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” So… Who is the Prophet?

John answers (“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert…” and “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize…”), but doesn’t ID the person in question. And I bring it up now because Moses in today’s first reading may be pointing to the answer. Which is not to say he gives the answer, but were there a Scripture scholar in the house who knows the old children’s game, he or she might be telling me even now, “You’re getting warmer…”

Warmer because the footnote in my Bible re: last month’s reading says that the Prophet is “probably the prophet like Moses” and refers me to today’s first reading. Here, Moses says to the Israelites, “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin…” (Moses

explains that this is exactly what the Israelites had asked God to do for them, and that God had indeed responded, “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin”). So, “Warmer…”

Warmer because the (Prophet) footnote on today’s reading sends me to Acts, where Peter speaks of Jesus’s dying and rising and encourages faith in the Christ, saying, “For Moses said, ‘A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsman…” And per the footnote on that passage, “At the time of Jesus, some Jews expected a unique prophet to come. Early Christianity applied this tradition and text to Jesus…” So, Jesus is the Prophet! Or maybe, “Colder…”

Colder because the (Prophet) footnote in my Book on today’s first reading also says this: “It seems that Moses is referring in general to all the true prophets who were to succeed him…” Hence, maybe the Prophet is not the Christ. Even with this, however, the footnote adds “…since Christ is the Great Prophet in whom the prophetic office finds it fulfillment…this passage was understood in a special Messianic

sense both by the Jews and by the Apostles.” So, seems that at least some label Jesus as the Prophet.

But you know what I think? I think that each of us is the Prophet! “Warmer…” I think that Jesus’s first miracle as noted by Mark in today’s Gospel--the cure of a demoniac--defines Jesus’s entire “prophetic office” (to quote a footnote): namely, the eradication of evil. “Warmer…” Aren’t we called to be Christ for one another? Aren’t we called to oppose evil? I think that on our best days, then, we are the Prophet that God said he would send. I think that on our best days, that very Prophet is us! Remember, though. I’m no Scripture scholar. I only call ‘em like I see ‘em. “Hot!”
