Santa Isabel: encontramos su histor ia en las pr imeras páginas ad-mirables del Evangelio de San Lucas, en la que se traza el prólogo del acontecimiento más increíble de la historia de la humanidad: la encar-nación de Dios entre los hombres. "En la época de Herodes, rey de Ju-dea - se lee - había un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, cuya esposa era de las hijas de Aarón y su nombre era Isabel. Ambos estaban justo antes de Dios y caminaban irreprochablemente en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor. No tenían hijos, porque Elizabeth era estéril, y ambos estaban muy por delante con los años. La falta de un linaje fue considerada casi una desgracia, y formó el tormento secreto de la pareja de ancianos israelitas. Saint Elizabeth: we find its history in the fir st admirable pages of the Gospel of St. Luke, in which the prologue of the most incredible event in the history of mankind is traced: the incarnation of God among men. "In the time of Herod, king of Judea - it reads - there was a priest named Zechariah, whose wife was of Aaron's daughters and his name was Elizabeth. They were both just before God and walked irreproachably in all the commandments and precepts of the Lord. They had no children, because Elizabeth was sterile, and they were both far ahead over the years. The lack of a lineage was considered almost a disgrace, and formed the secret torment of the elderly Israel-ite couple. But one day, when Zechariah offered incense at the Shrine, an angel appeared to the right of the altar, to announce that his prayers and Elizabeth's prayers had finally been answered. "Your wife will give you a child, " said the angel, whom you will name John. It will be a source of joy and satisfaction for you, and many will rejoice at the birth of him, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. Thus, the old priest and his barren wife come to participate in the sublime event of the Incarnation. John, "prophet of the highest one," will be born of them, the first and greatest witness of Christ in the world. For doubt-ing the angel's words, Zechariah will remain mute throughout the time of Elizabeth's fast-paced motherhood. And it was during that time, after six months, that Elizabeth received the visit of a distant relative, Mary of Nazareth, wife of the carpenter Joseph. "The entrance to the house of Zechariah, " says St. Luke, "Mary greeted Elizabeth. And it came to pass that, as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt into her robe, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried aloud, "Blessed art thou among the women, and blessed is the fruit of thy woumb. Blessed, that you believed, because you will ac-complish the things that the Lord has told you." St. Elizabeth was thus the first woman to greet the Mother of the Redeemer not yet born in Mary. It can be said that she is the first believer in the history of Chris-tianity. Mary will respond with the wonderful song of gratitude, not to her, but to the power of God, the Magnificat. After john's birth, the tongue of Zechariah will be freed to pronounce the name of John, imposed by the angel on his son, "prophet of the Most High". And also Zechariah, full of the Holy Spirit, will raise up his hymn of joy and blessing: "Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, because he has vis-ited and redeemed his people".
