From the desk of Father James

“I will praise your name forever, my King and my God!”

This past week, on July 4th, we celebrated our nation’s independence, a holiday that we celebrate each year com-memorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence two days after the Continental Congress voted for independence from England on July 2, 1776. Our founding fathers set into action a movement that has led to the creation of this nation in which we live today. While there may be areas in which we disagree, one thing remains, and that is that we live in a place in which we are able to gather each week to worship God. We believe that He has created each one of us as His own special creation. Yet, there are places in this world in which God’s children do not have the ability to do this. They are not able to live their faith freely. I pray that we truly take time to appreciate this gift of freedom that we have and to realize that this gift is slowly being eroded away. Let us pray that God may give us the courage and strength to fight and protect this right of religious freedom. So many have dedicated their lives to create and keep this important right for us. Last weekend also ushered in the beginning of my third year serving as your shepherd here at St. Francis in Sher-wood. These past two years have passed very quickly and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to guide and lead you as we journey together in being disciples of Jesus Christ. As I look ahead to the year to come, I am thinking of offering a bible Study series starting in mid-September. I am currently thinking of offering these sessions on Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm and then possi-bly another time slot as well for those that may not want to venture out in the evenings. This could possibly be Thursday afternoons from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm OR Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Typically these sessions would focus on the readings for the upcoming weekend. Stay tuned for more information! Have a blessed week!! In Christ, Fr. James

St. Francis Parish would like to welcome all newcomers and visitors.

We turn your attention to the Ministry Table in the narthex of the church where you

will find information on the various ministries in our parish and how to

contact the coordinator. New parishioners are encouraged to register by calling the office at

503-625-6185.

We welcome you as we welcome Christ!

In the Spirit of St. Francis…

In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU!

To Hunter and Amanda Sheely for the beautiful flowers from their wedding.

To Yvonne Nimeh for the beautiful hydrangeas for the church.

To Dick Haltiner and Dave Cookson who expe-dited putting up the "Respect Religious Freedom" signs around the church property.

To Steve and Yvonne Holthouse who have so carefully tended to the memorial cross area by purchasing flowers, bark, and patriotic flags. Your on-going commitment and generosity is ap-preciated.

To Sue Pelletier who provided the refreshments following the Independence Day Mass, solemn prayers, patriotic reflection and song. Thank you for sharing your homemade delicious treats.

To Chris Welters for blowing the parking lot and church grounds.

Hope Garden Update

Summer seems to have arrived! I see sunshine, blooming flowers, sneezing people, and joyful school children. I also see that our Hope Garden is planted and growing. The Hope Garden (located behind the Old Hall) provides fresh produce to our food pantry. We are growing a long list of vegeta-bles and fruits. Our strawberry and raspberries are producing beautiful fruit and we are excited for what else our garden will bring. A big thank you to Vida Eppich, Carol and Mike Roos, and Vern and Debbie Puchalski for their tireless work in our gar-den. They are truly vegetation rockstars!

If you or your family is interested in volunteering at the garden, contact Anna in the Parish Center. Vol-unteers must be able to bend down and lift buckets of produce.

Sister Emily Brabham is the daughter of Lin-da and Dale Brabham of Sherwood, Oregon. She will profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for the first time during the July 29 Mass. Sister Brabham has been in ini-tial discernment for four years. She has par-ticipated in the life and mission of the Sisters and the intercommunity programs for pre-novitiate and canonical year while serving as Director of Youth Ministry for the parish of St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange, Illi-nois. She lives in community at the Francis-can Dwelling place in Chicago.

“I am grateful for the Sisters continuing to journey with me through this discernment process,” Sister Brabham said. “The gift of the Clinton Franciscan Family is an indescriba-ble joy that I thank God for every day. I am excited to see where this journey takes me as I seek to serve God’s people and live out the mission through peacemaking and active nonviolence while embracing the charism of conversion of heart.”

How serious a sin is stealing? Stealing is a serious sin if the thing stolen is of considerable value. Stealing something of small value can be mortally sinful if the owner is poor and thus suffers great injury. A series of small thefts could eventually result in a mortal sin, when the total amount taken becomes sufficiently large. St. Paul Family Catechism.

Next Week: Must a thief return stolen goods?

Sacramental News Congratulations to Hunter and Amanda Sheely who celebrated their wedding in the parish on Saturday, July 1.
