Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 20, 2013

I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me? My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. — Psalm 121:12

SHARING THE LIFE-GIVING WORD Assurance or Faith?

It was a drought season for the local people who lived on farming and pro-ducing crops. The priest of the local church announced that there would be a prayer service for the public to pray for rain. It was a scorching day and the sun was shed-

ding its hot rays upon the land when people were gath-ering outside the church. The prayer service was held for an hour with fervent prayers. Suddenly there was thunder and dark clouds appeared, then heavy rains fell like pouring. While people were trying to run and find shelter under the patios of the church, a little girl took out from her bag an umbrella and opened it.

It is said: “when you pray for rain, bring with you an umbrella.” Praying for rain is the act of needs; bring-ing an umbrella is the act of faith. As human beings we cannot escape from acting out of needs; but pray-ing for needs to be satisfied must lead us to the One we pray to. What more important in Christian prayer is not so much of what we ask for, but to know whom we pray to. We pray so much, but do we trust God much?

Jesus, in encouraging his disciples to pray, always said, “… How much more your heavenly Father will listen to you and will see to it that your needs are taken care of.” Jesus always had confidence in God’s love for us, but there was one thing left for him to be con-cerned: “But when the Son of Man comes back, will he find faith on earth?”

At the bottom line, the question is: “Are we looking for assurance, or are we looking for faith?” Rev. Peter T Truong
