16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In our lives we can become so focused on the tasks that we are doing We can almost get lost in all the details of the things that we are doing It could happen to us in our daily lives at work We are working hard to do our job focused on the different things that need to be done to accomplish our work When we are so focused working hard we can sometimes forget that which we are working towards It could be forgetting what these different tasks are doing or losing sight of what the real goal is We get focused on what we are doing and what others are doing This can happen in volunteer work and church ministry as well We become so focused on what we are doing The tasks that need to be done ndash organizing this group of people to complete this task doing that task that I am assigned whole heartedly ensuring funds are raised and on hand to complete the work of the group etc These tasks can become our focus But the reality is the task we are working on is just a small part of what might be occurring overall or the task we have could be the goal But what sometimes happens is the purpose of the task is lost The task overall is being completed but the purpose is no longer the focus in our mind Today in the Gospel we have that familiar story of Mary and Martha Jesus has come to their home and Martha is busy taking care of the tasks of hosting Jesus and the people there to see Jesus Martha as we hear in the Gospel is working hard and focused on the tasks to meet this goal of hosting But like we can in our lives we can get focused on certain tasks or what others may be doing Martha has also lost sight of what she is really working towards She has come to Jesus to get Mary her sister to help in the tasks of hosting all these people But Jesus reminds her of what is truly happening He points out how she has become so focused on what is happening and how she has wrapped herself up in worrying that she has forgotten why she is doing these things Jesus is not telling her that the task of hosting is not what she should be doing rather that she has focused herself on something else losing sight of what is truly going on ndash that which Mary has realized Living in the presence of the Lord Martha is doing good work it is allowing those in the house to be in the presence of the Lord and it should also allow herself to as well through the work she has chosen to do But instead she has become focused on the tasks themselves and what Mary is doing And so it is with us when we lose sight of the purpose of what we are doing We are called to live in the presence of the Lord We are called to follow the Lord and the Lordrsquos will in our life In this we carry out tasks there is work that we do in order to follow Him in order for us to live in the Lordrsquos presence as we hear in the readings But sometimes in doing the good work the work that is for the Lord ndash like Martha ndash we forget what we are truly doing it for Our focus is not on the Lord but on other things We forget to choose ndash like Mary ndash the better part May we always strive to remember that in whatever we are doing that we are doing it for the Lord That we are remaining in his presence always So that we are not distracted or lose focus of this So that we like Mary can stay focused on the Lord always ndash so we can choose the better part ndash to remain with Christ in all that we do May the Lord bless you always Fr Chris Hassel
