Be Prepared!

Twelve years ago a priest for the Diocese of Savannah was eating at a restaurant with his two associate priests. His emergency phone went off; an alarm had been tripped at the church. He told his associates to continue eating, he would take care of it. He went to the church, found that it was a false alarm, fixed the problem and returned to dinner. On his return he missed the entrance to the restaurant and attempted to re-enter the parking lot. As he did so his car was broadsided by a truck, and he was killed instantly. He had just changed assignments and had come to a new city. When he did, he made up new will. He lived by the principle that he should be able to fit all of his earthly goods in a car. In spite of the tragedy, we took comfort in the fact that he lived his life in such a way as to be ready to see the Lord.

The readings today seem more apt for Advent as they speak of the coming of the Lord. Although we are in the middle of ordinary time, the Church is saying to us, “Do not fall asleep! You know not the day nor hour.” We should be like a servant “awaiting the Master’s return from a wedding.”

“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant.” A person in love is always awake. “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Let us pause today to examine our lives:

-What am I doing with my beautiful Catholic Faith?

-What am I doing with the gift of family?

-How am I living my marriage vows?

-How am I using my finances?

-How am I using my time?

-What do I do with my free time?

-What or whom am I too busy for?

We should look forward to the return of our Master! It should not be a cause for fear but for rejoicing! May we order our lives in such a way that we will welcome Je-sus when He comes for us!

“Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treas-ure is, there also will your heart be.”

-Fr. Tim McKeown
