LISTEN TO JESUS AND

THE PROPHETS Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwel-come, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testa-ment prophets, and Jere-miah is a great example

of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the proph-et of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and di-lemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — They took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern (Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10). Psalm — Lord, come to my aid! (Psalm 40). Second Reading — Let us keep our eyes fixed on Je-sus, the leader and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:1-4). Gospel — I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing (Luke 12:49-53). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday’s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemo-ration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ’s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the “Dormition of the Theotokos,” or the “Falling Asleep of the God-bearer.” There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary’s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary’s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary’s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as “my friend,” and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin in late Sep-tember at St. Gabriel Parish. If you (or someone you know) are interested in becoming Catholic; or if you (or some-one you know) have been Baptized

but have not yet been Confirmed or received First Com-munion, please call Matt Shea and leave the name and phone number of the person so that he may make con-tact with them and let them know a little bit more about the process. Now is a good time to talk to your friends and family about joining our Church Community...so start looking around for those you might think may be interested in participating in the RCIA process. They might be waiting for someone to ask them if they’ve considered joining the Church...that someone could be you! Feel free to call Matt Shea at 415-731-6161 with any questions you or someone you know might have about this program.

CONGRATULATIONS FR. FREDDIE!

Please join us after the 8:00 AM Mass on Sunday, August 25th in Bedford Hall for a coffee and donut reception in honor of this very spe-cial milestone. May the celebration of his 25th Anniversary be a source of great joy and continued blessings for him.

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome Back! First day of school begins at 8:00 AM on Monday, August 19th. We hope all of the SG families had a peaceful summer vacation, filled with fun, laughter and some relaxation. The Faculty and Staff at St. Gabriel School are excited to dive right into our 71st year of providing excellent Catholic education to children in our community. Here we go! Welcome to all of the new families joining the St. Gabriel community. After 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, August 18th, children and parents of students entering TK and Kindergarten are invited to an ice-cream social and meet and greet in the kindergarten yard. Good luck to last year’s 8th graders as they embark on their high school journey. We pray that all of the knowledge and skills that you learned during your time at SG prepares you for what lays ahead. Please remember to visit, you will always have a home at St. Gabriel! To all of the St. Gabriel Alumni that are heading off to college, best of luck to you. Your future is bright wherever the path may take you. We hold you in our thoughts and prayers and hope you visit soon!

14th at 10:45 AM in the Parish Center. You must call the Parish Center at 415-731-6161 to reserve your spot.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY/PRAYER GROUP

The next Women’s Bible Study/Prayer Group will be on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM at the Par-

ish Center. This group meets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month and is facilitated by Sr. Bernadette Hart. This is a drop-in study group and all are welcome!

WOMEN’S RETREAT FOR HEALING AFTER ABORTION

It’s normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including a loss of a child by abortion. It can form a hole in one’s heart, a hole so deep that sometimes it seems that nothing can fill the emptiness. You are not alone. The Archdiocese of San Francisco sponsors Project Rachel which helps women and men heal the pain of abortion and find the path to peace and reconciliation. The Spanish language retreat will be led by Fr. Armando Gutierrez and will be on September 7th & 8th. The English language retreat will be on September 14th & 15th and will be led by Con-templative of St. Joseph Father Vito Perrone with the Daughters of Carmel. The retreats will be held at a confi-dential site. There is a $50 suggested donation but can be waived for financial hardship. To sign up email [email protected] or for more information call 415-614-5567.

ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES THANK YOU!

On behalf of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop for Military Services, USA, thanks to those who contributed to the Triennial National Collec-tion for AMS last week. Your generosity will assist Arch-bishop Broglio in the mission, “Serving Those Who Serve,” and will help make it possible for Catholic men and women, and their families, currently serving in the U.S. Military, to receive the sacraments and pastoral care no matter their location around the globe. Your support will also provide the sacraments and pastoral care to those who are wounded, or as veterans, being cared for in one of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. St. Gabriel collected $378.00 to help support those who serve and protect this great nation and who defend the freedoms we hold dear.

NOTICE FOUND IN ALL FRENCH CHURHES!

It is possible that on entering this church, you may hear the Call of God. On the other hand, it is not likely that he will contact you by phone. Thank you for turning off your phone. If you would like to talk to God, come in, choose a quiet

place, and talk to him. If you would like to see him, send him a text while driving.

NON-SILENT RETREAT FOR MEN AND WOMEN

When our cell phones or computers don’t work as they should, we are told to “hard re-set” them. That means literally turning the power off and restarting them. Our spiritual lives are the same. Sometimes things are not working as they should and we need to do something. Come and re-set your spiritual life. Fr. Brendan McGuire will use his experience as a former executive from the IT world to guide people working in the tech industry through a re-set procedure for our spiritual life. The re-treat will be Friday, October 18th at 4:00 pm through Sunday October 20th at 2:00 PM at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos. You can register at www.jrclosaltos.org or call 408-917-4010 for more infor-mation.
