The Lenten regulations for this year are as follows: Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all

Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all

Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. “The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation: it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter.” By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. “(On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance.” (U.S. Bishops statements on penitential observances, 1966.)

Las reglas Cuaresmales para es-te año son las siguientes:

Abstinencia: Todos los Católicos mayores de 14 años, deben abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los Viernes durante la Cuaresma.

Ayuno: Debe ser observado el Miércoles de Ceniza

por todos los Católicos mayores de 18 años pero menores de 59 años. Aquellos que quieran cumplir con esta obligación solo pueden hacer una comida completa, y dos comidas pequeñas si son necesarias para mantener las fuerzas, de acuerdo a las necesidades individuales, pero no se permite alimen-to sólido entre comidas.

El ayuno y la abstinencia Pascual son obligatorios el Viernes Santo y recomendados para el Sábado de Gloria. “La Cuaresma es una preparación para la celebración de la Pascua. La Liturgia prepara a los catecúmenos para la celebración del misterio Pascual a través de las varias etapas de iniciación Cristiana; también prepara a los fieles, quienes recuerdan sus propios bautismos y hacen penitencia en preparación a la Pascua.” Por la triple disciplina del ayuno, la limosna y la oración, la iglesia celebra la Cuaresma desde el Miércoles de Ceniza hasta la noche del Jueves Santo. Todos los fieles y los catecúmenos deben practicar seriamente estas tres tradiciones. El no cumplir con estos días de penitencia se considera una falta muy seria dentro de la comunidad Católica. “Recomendamos vigorosamente la participación en la Misa todos los días de la semana y un ayuno por su propia cuenta. Debido a las graves necesidades humanas que siempre pesan en la conciencia Cristiana, les pedimos, particularmente durante la Cuaresma, generosidad a los programas locales, nacionales y mundiales. Que compartamos nuestra abundancia con los pobres, para convertir nuestro deber en penitencia”. (Declaración de los Obispos Estadounidenses sobre practicas penitenciales, 1966.)
