EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Undergraduate Mentoring Programs
Developed the Careers in Medicine (CIM) Program at Hackensack UMC: 2006-Present
The program is for college students who want to pursue a career in medicine. The students are
mentored by ED providers throughout the summer. Sessions are also conducted on writing an essay,
interviewing and admission strategies. There are 60 students enrolled per summer. Each year one of
the students is mentored by Dr. Feldman.

Developed the Research Associates Program at Hackensack UMC, part of the National Alliance of
Research Associates Program (NARAP); 2010 – Present
This program is for college students in the area interested in volunteering a few hours a week
throughout the school year in Emergency Medicine research. Sessions cover human subjects protection,
ethics, how to screen for and enroll human research subjects. Each year at least 2 of the students in this
group are mentored by Dr. Feldman.
Developed the Take a Break Program at HackensackUMC 2010-Present
This program is for adult volunteers or undergraduate students who are trained to be part of the
treatment team to provide direct patient care in several of the Hackensack Network Emergency
Departments. This innovative award winning program is based on the patient and Family Centered Care
Model.

RESEARCH GRANTS
Dr. Feldman, Chairman of ETC, VP for AMERCO, Hackensack UMC is Host Hospital for AMERCO MSED
Estimated Grant Revenue for AMERCO MSED: $500,000
Project Period January -June 2016.
Project Abstract:
The AMERCO MSED provides mobile onsite Emergency Department Services in disasters and for planned
medical services events. After Hurricane Sandy MSED assets were deployed in both NJ and NY. The
MSED was also deployed for non-emergency events like Super bowl XLIX, Concerts and to provide
community urgent care while construction of a fixed facility was completed. Kennedy Health in
collaboration with the NJ Hospital Association in response to a grant funded by NJ Department of Health
has requested a proposal to deploy 1 or more MSED (Mobile Satellite Emergency Departments) to
designated Southern NJ Communities to be set-up and operational between January 1st (or later) and
June 30th, 2016. These resources can be easily configured to support Kennedy Health’s proposed
program to the “Improving Healthcare to Veterans” grant by providing a safe, fully functional and state
approved stand-alone clinical facility, featuring its own power generation, potable water and waste
containment system. AMERCO MSED will deploy the assets, inclusive of set up, JIT operational training,
continuous technical support, breakdown response, and required deployment end-servicing.
Ebola
2015-2016 Ebola Assessment/Treatment Centers Grant - EBOL16ATC002
Dr. Feldman, EVD Response Leader
Maximum Grant funds are $650,000
Funds are Retroactive to July 2014, forward to July 2018 (Five Year Period)
Project Abstract:
New Jersey (NJ) has identified one Treatment Center and two Assessment Hospitals. Each facility has
received onsite visits from the Health and Human Services (HHS) Rapid Ebola Preparedness (REP) team
and NJDOH subject matter experts in Preparedness, Disease Control, Environmental Health, Risk
Communications, and Field Operations. Additionally they have completed comprehensive capabilities
assessments in areas such as facility infrastructure, patient transport, laboratories, and Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE). Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) has been designated as
NJ's Treatment Center. Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and University Hospital (UH) have
been designated as the State's Assessment Hospitals.
Our goal is to provide comprehensive and coordinated care to EVD suspected patients and to protect
New Jersey's healthcare workers as they continue to perform job responsibilities. To fulfill our goal, this
funding will directly support the treatment/assessment hospitals within NJ. The objectives are: 1.) To
alter facilities physical space to allow for the proper donning/doffing of PPE; 2.) To retrofit facilities
physical space to allow for the proper isolation/HVAC system to identify, isolate and treat a suspect or
confirmed EVD patient; 3.) To modify other areas to ensure appropriate layout and assure good
infection control; 4.) To purchase PPE and train staff on proper donning/doffing and correct PPE use 5.)
To train and exercise healthcare workers on all procedures as it relates to a suspected EVD patient; and
25
6.) To purchase Point of Care (POC) laboratory equipment and supplies. The expected outcome of this
project is to build capacity to treat EVD and similar communicable diseases, and to provide high quality
medical care to patients.
2015-2016 IMPROVING HEALTHCARE TO VETERANS
I. Comprehensive statewide effort to serve veterans’ primary care, behavioral health and other needs
II. Innovative or evidence-based smaller denomination grants that provide health wellness and
management services or activities to veterans and their families
AMERCO received a sub grant of $284,000 under this project.
Department of Homeland Security UASI MRRP: to develop a prototype of a rapidly deployable Mobile
