RSPCA Cupcake Monday Fundraiser – Monday 17th August The SRC is holding a special cupcake fundraiser to help raise money for the RSPCA on Monday 17th August. Students are asked to donate a maximum of 1 dozen cupcakes towards the stall.

Cupcake Competition – Gold Coin Donation To enter SGBPS Cupcake Competition all you have to do is decorate your cupcake using an animal theme and bring your cupcake to school with a gold coin donation. Certificates will be awarded to the most creatively decorated animal themed cupcakes.

All money raised during Cupcake Day will go to the RSPCA and the animals in their care. Every cupcake you bake has the power to change lives. Our fundraising efforts through Cupcake Day will give mistreated animals a second chance at a better life.

Tree Planting Last Friday 4/5C and 5O worked with Shoalhaven City Council and planted over 500 trees in our local reserve. The students enjoyed this great opportunity and learned that conservation of our flora is important to sustain our native animal life.

KidsMatter Korner: Encouraging Children To Get Along Children’s ability to get along with others – or their ‘social development’ – is a process that happens as they grow. For example, four-year-olds are in the early stages of social development – they are learning to take turns, listen to other children’s ideas and play group games. By middle primary school, it is common for children to congregate in small friendship groups based around similar interests.

Groups give children valuable practice in setting, following and negotiating social rules. Think about how you deal with other groups of people at work, home and in social situations – chances are you learned and gradually refined these skills throughout childhood.

Limited social development can affect children’s ability to get along with others, particularly in group settings. Children with poor social skills may dominate groups and exclude members, which can lead to bullying, peer-pressure or getting mixed-up in trouble. Or they may have confidence problems, becoming easily dominated and influenced.

Positive social development is about teaching children good values and responsible decision-making, which can help them resist peer-pressure and become valuable members of their group of friends and society in general. You can: • Teach by example – model positive behaviours by treating them and others fairly and respectfully. • Develop their social and emotional skills – empathy, sharing, caring, listening and taking turns. • Help them learn from their mistakes – use situations as ‘teachable moments’ to reinforce good values. • Give them chances to practise good values – like volunteer work or charitable donations. • Supervise external influences – media, internet, games and friends.

Our school has been fortunate enough to receive an Australian Sports Commission Sporting Schools Grant. This term students in Kindergarten to Year 4 will be involved in the Netball NSW NetSetGo Program with a qualified Netball NSW coach for the next 4 weeks during their PE lessons. Book Week Parade and Book Fair – Wednesday 26th August The Book Week theme this year is ‘Books Light Up Our World’, so anything to do with light or sun, stars, electricity, laser beams, glow worms, fireworks, fireflies, fairies, anything that sparkles, shines or glows would fit in nicely with the theme, or your child may simply want to come dressed as their favourite book character.

The parade will begin at 11:45, followed by a $2 sausage sizzle lunch and the

Book Fair in the library which will be open from 1pm—3pm. After lunch, the

children will return to their classrooms and engage in some special Book week

activities.

(Please note: In accordance with the new DEC Attendance Policy any parent wanting to take their child home early must sign them out at the front office

before collecting their child. An unjustified absence will be recorded. Please be aware that there may be a wait to sign your child out. Teachers are unable to release your child from class without an official office exit slip.)

The Book Fair was hugely popular last year and we hope it will be as successful this year. Students can pre-order their books or purchase on the day of the fair. Any books that sell out can be ordered. They usually take 2 weeks to arrive at school.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Book Parade!
