URGENT PRAYER NEEDS? When faced with a crisis situa-tion, people need as many prayers as possible. If you have an urgent prayer need, call Cheryl at 429-4223 or email [email protected]

REQUESTS FOR SPONSOR CERTIFICATES - Occasionally a person is asked to be a sponsor at a Baptism or Confirmation. A Sponsor certificate comes from the parish and testifies to the fact the person is Catholic and:

1. The sponsor lives within the parish of St. Gregory Barbarigo and is registered.

2. The sponsor also needs to be consistently at Sunday Mass each week, that is what it is to be practicing. Some opt to go to a different parish or a shrine, but if that is the case, we cannot honestly say that person is an active parishioner be-cause he or she is not.

3. Additionally, a person needs to be at least 16 years old.

4. Have received the sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Communion and Confirmation.

5. And if married, married in the Church.

If you know an event is a few weeks away, contact the parish ahead of time. Sometimes people think that since they were confirmed here then a sponsor certificate is somehow automatic; well no that’s not the case. Again, the above criteria need to be met to satisfy that requirement.

Ash Wednesday is February 17, the beginning of Lent, so this is a good time to reflect on the obligation of Sunday Mass. On Saturday, March 14, 2020, the public celebration of Mass was canceled in the Archdiocese of New York in an effort to avoid spreading the corona virus. In

many respects, this measure was a shock to all of us, though understandable. At the same time, it was not without prece-dent: public Mass had also been canceled during the Spanish Flu in 1919. We gradually learned how to present the mass online - though it took a while to figure out the process. So for about three months:from March 14 to June 13, there was no public Mass. But then on June 14, 2021 public Mass was again permitted, so we have had public Mass for about nine months.

Now, as you might recall - in Catholic World - we have an obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Where does that obligation come from? Well the short answer is from God as he commanded in the Third Commandment - Keep Holy The Sabbath. And what is the most fundamental way of keeping holy the Sabbath? By coming together to celebrate the Eucha-rist on the Sabbath, which is Sunday. Are there exceptions? Of course. IF there is a blizzard and you can’t get to Mass or if you are stuck at home with the flu, or if someone is elderly and getting out is very difficult, or if you have a serious un-derlying medical condition which makes you particularly vul-nerable to catch Covid19. But baring those exceptions - there is still an obligation to be at Mass on Sunday; not watching on TV or PC or other things. So keep in mind - presently there is no dispensation from attending Sunday Mass. What's more - if you are really committed to Jesus Christ - I would think you would want to be with Christ in the Eucharist on Sunday.

So my friends, if you’ve been skipping, it’s time to come back.

Yours in Christ,

Father Fallon

Guidelines for the Season of Lent

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE: During the season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through performing acts of fast and abstinence.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence, which means we don’t eat meat or poultry (abstinence). Fasting requires that only one full meal may be taken per day and two smaller meals can be taken during the day, but these two smaller meals should not equal the one larger meal. Snacking between meals is not permitted.

Remember, all Fridays during Lent are designated as days of penance during which we are encouraged to practice self-denial out of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us. This includes not eating meat or poultry on any Friday in Lent.

The time for fulfilling your Easter Duty extends from the First Sunday of Lent (February 21) to Holy Trinity Sunday (May 30). What is your Easter Duty? The term “Easter Duty” is the obligation to go to confession and receive Holy Communion during the Easter season. If you already have a habit of regular confession and communion, you can fulfill the obligation without much effort.

Ash Wednesday - a day of fast and not eating meat or poultry.

Schedule: 7:00 am—Prayer Service, 9:00 am - Mass, 12:10 pm - Mass, 5:30 pm - Prayer Service and 7:00 pm - Mass. Distribution of Ashes will occur at liturgies.
