Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Tie against our friends from Atherton LR. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. It has been three weeks since the start of the campaign and to say we have had an excellent start would be a massive understatement. As we come into this contest Town sit proudly at the summit of the North West Counties League, Premier Division table after our 3-1 victory here over AFC Liverpool on Tuesday evening. This is a massive feat even at this early stage of the season considering the number of new players in the squad. Don’t get me wrong we all know that it is very early days in the season and as is often said it is a marathon not a sprint but after the difficult last few months of the previous season one can be forgiven for enjoying the turnaround! Tuesday’s performance was fantastic in the first half with some good moves being put together by Town including the third goal for the hosts after a flowing move finished by Leon Williams, his 3rd in 4 matches and it was also nice to see Kava and Addo get on the score sheet. The second period saw Town sit back and allow Liverpool the possession in a frustrating half for the home side. Onto this afternoon’s contest as we get set to take on Atherton LR again for the second time this term. The two sides played out a 0-0 draw at Crilly Park some 11 days ago. LR are the only side to have taken anything off Town this term and with £750 prize money Town will be hoping to make amends for this with a victory this afternoon. A trip to Cammell Laird in a fortnight awaits the victors this afternoon and Town have an FA Cup score to settle with the Birkenhead outfit from a couple of seasons ago! Should the scores be level after 90 minutes then the two sides will reconvene to do it all again on Tuesday evening at Crilly Park, kick off 7.45pm with the scheduled league contest at Stone Dominoes being postponed. Let get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them into the next round. Enjoy the Game. . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Atherton LR were founded in 1956 as Laburnum Rovers when a group of local lads wanted to start their own team. They asked Joe Riley, elder brother of one of the lads, to help them and by the end of December 1956 they were ready to go. They were admitted into the local Briarcroft Junior League, despite the season being well under way. A decision had to be made after that first season whether the club would continue to struggle and just be a fun thing for the lads, or whether they wanted to be more successful. It was decided that they wanted to improve which meant bringing in some new faces and unfortunately some of the lads who helped start the club had to go. Success followed almost immediately as the club progressed through local
Leagues and won cup competitions and Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior Football. After a spell in the Leigh League, the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented any further advancement, so a farmers field was found and despite footpaths criss-crossing it and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved to their new ground and were able to take their place in the First Division of the Bolton Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air-raid shelter they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did for the club, the ground was renamed Crilly Park. In 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was accepted. A stipulation of the League was that the town had to be in the clubs name, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in Division Two where they remained until the League was reorganised in 1987 when their facilities saw them placed in Division One. Ground improvements continued, including the erection of floodlights in 1989, allowing the club to enter the FA Cup for the first time and in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. In 1992/93 the team won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and had a run of 39 consecutive games unbeaten in the League. They also won the NWCL Championship Trophy. However, there was disappointment as promotion to the UniBond League was denied them because of grading requirements. Undaunted, the team repeated their double the following season and this time were promoted. Also in 1993/94 Atherton LR reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase where they lost in a replay to Diss Town. Two good seasons in the UniBond League saw the club make steady progress, but then financial trouble struck and the club were relegated for the first time in their history. A change of regime at the club seemed to offer hope for the future, but following a tip-off from the officials of Haslingden football club, LR's ex-officials found that bills hadn't been paid and the bank was on the verge of closing the club down. Fortunately the previous Directors shares had not yet been bought so they were able to retake control of the club and after much hard work in co-operation with the bank and various creditors, managed to keep the club afloat while the debts were paid. With little money to spend, two seasons of struggle followed and culminated in the clubs second relegation, this time to the NWCL Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as

. . . Atherton Laburnum Rovers manager in November 2000 brought about a remarkable transformation and after nine straight victories, they won promotion back to Division One in their final game of the season. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Denis Haslem took over as joint managers and set about rebuilding the team as all but three first team players left the club within two weeks. After three months of struggle, the new team ended the season unbeaten in their final eight games to earn a mid-table position. Denis Haslem moved on in the summer of 2003 to take over the helm at West Lancs side Stoneclough and the experienced Ian Street joined the club as assistant manager. 2003/04 season saw LR finish in a comfortable mid-table position without a relegation fight for the first time in a while and the club picked up two pieces of silverware. LR won the Goldline Trophy and a few weeks later the Bolton Hospital Cup both at the Reebok Stadium. LR successfully defended the Goldline Trophy in season 04/5 and the club finished in 15th place. However Foster and Street left the club at the end of the season. Eventually after some traumatic twists Mike Lester and Darren Ford became the mew management team at Crilly Park. Last term saw dramatic events at Crilly Park as the side had no less than four managers taking the helm. The cub only just managed to avoid relegation after some good results early in the season. Mark Cox was appointed manager in the summer for the LR Golden Jubilee season. However drama is never far away at LR and he quit in February 2007 and Roy Sweeny was handed the reigns with Robert Hope as assistant and after a successful run in the club finished in 16th place. Hopes were high for the new season but the expected results failed to materialise and Sweeney resigned at the start of December due to pressures away from the field. Malcolm Anderton was put in temporary charge and Stuart Humphries was appointed for the final two months of the season and LR did just enough to maintain their top flight status. Dave Hughes was appointed first team manager for the 2008/9 season with the remit of building the foundations of a stable future for the club after three seasons of trials and tribulations both on and off the field and the club had an excellent first term under his leadership as he guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish and they secured silverware in the shape of the Goldline Trophy beating Stoneclough in the final at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium. 2009/10 saw the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to finish just outside the relegation places in 20th position. Hughes shocked the club by resigning after they had secured an excellent home victory over Bootle in Sepptember 2010. Hughes was to take up the reigns as assistant manager to Paul McNally at Runcorn Linnets. The club moved quickly at appoint a successor and promoted from within as Glenn Moses was giving the job having been at the club for three seasons formerly as head coach and assistant manager. Moses guided the club to another Goldline Trophy Final, this time the were defeated. The outfit finished 10th by Moses also quit at the end of the season and was replaced by former player Phil Priestley.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for our extra preliminary round game in this season’s FA Cup. May I take this opportunity to welcome our opponents today Atherton LR FC for this our second meeting of the season. Having already met in a league game over at Crilly Park with the score finishing in a tense and nervy 0-0 draw. The league will only really start to take shape after 10 or 12 games when teams start to settle down and I have no doubt you will start to see the contenders and strugglers in their rightful positions. But the start we have made is beyond most people’s expectations… apart from the players and staff who have worked really hard in pre-season to make sure that we get off to the best possible start we could. I am sure we have taken one or two teams by surprise with our squad of players and our organisation and tactics, so things I am sure will only get tougher for us now that other clubs are realising that our good start is not down purely to luck. Back to today’s game and more importantly today’s opponents. Atherton suffered a heavy defeat over in Cone on Tuesday night so I am sure Phil Priestly will have his team fired up for this game and the chance to face Cammell Lairds in the next round. If we are to get anything out of today’s game we must have the right work ethic because Atherton have already shown us once already this season that they have the stomach for a good old tussle, and if we stand off and let them dictate the play we will be in trouble. We need to give them the respect they deserve, but on the other hand we need to force our game and our pattern of play upon them and not let them get a foothold in the game. We are forced into making one or two changes for today’s encounter, but myself and Andy have a great belief in the squad of players we have at our disposal and trust each and every one of them to do a job for us. Things are looking good at the moment so we need to enjoy the moment and make sure that with hard work, determination and a commitment to give 100% not just for yourself but for your team mates as well that the moment continues for quite a while yet. So let’s all get behind the lads and hopefully get the result we desire. And finally let’s hope all the players, officials and supporters of both teams enjoy the game and the hospitality on offer this afternoon. And we see one or two of you again on Tuesday night against Stone Dominoes FC for our next league game. Enjoy the Game

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary tie against our near neighbours Atherton LR. Let’s hope their players, committee and supporters have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials, referee Mr Cunliffe from Bebbington and his assistants Messrs. Crowe and Campion who have made the trip from the Isle of Man! It’s only recently the two teams met in league action at Crilly Park and Town’s run of almost 70 games without a goalless draw came to an end on a frustrating evening when chances were created but none were taken and this stands as the only blemish on an otherwise impressive start to the season. Last Saturday saw Town pick up an impressive (and deserved) three points at Colne FC with an early goal from Leon Williams and a late winner from Iain Dyson. In between there was some good play from both sides and I am sure our hosts will have been disappointed to lose out especially as they equalised with six minutes remaining. Colne let their frustration at conceding that late goal show on Tuesday evening when they hammered today’s visitors 6-0 at Holt House. I missed last Tuesday’s 3-1 home victory over AFC Liverpool but was delighted to be able to follow the scores via Twitter! From all accounts Town were dominant in the first half with goals from Carl Addison, Mike Kavanagh (picture right) and Leon Williams but seemed prepared to soak up the second half pressure with too much trouble and following Winsford’s 1-0 defeat at Glossop on Wednesday evening Town sit at the top of the NWCFL Premier Division. There’s nothing won at this point in the season but it’s still nice to see! Today’s game will be another tough encounter and the lads will need to be on top form to ensure they make progress, pick up the £750 prize money and make the trip to Cammell Lairds in a couple of week’s time. Should today’s game end in a draw the replay will be back at Crilly Park on Tuesday evening. With plenty of other FA Cup action this afternoon our planned trip to Stone Dominoes on Tuesday evening will only go ahead should there be a positive result in our game and Stone’s home tie against Wellington. Hopefully there will be some updates available in the clubhouse after the game, otherwise please see the club’s website for details. We’ve only a week to go before our first 100+ Club Draw of the season - if you’d like to join each number costs £5 (per month) with the chance of winning up to £150 - please see Andy Langley at today’s game. Still with fundraising, many thanks to the staff and players who have managed to get themselves sponsored (another three sponsors this week). We’re still on the look out for match and match ball sponsors from just £50 per game along with programme advertisers. Last but not least a mention must go to Andy Flood who made the journey to and from Caernarfon for Tuesday’s game where he and his family were holidaying - a great effort for the team! Enjoy the game and please give the lads your vocal support and encouragement - see you at Stone on Tuesday next. John McKiernan Chairman, St Helens Town AFC

Match Report & Photos . . . Saturday 13th August 2011 North West Counties League, Premier Division Colne 1-2 St Helens Town The excellent start to the season continued with a battling victory at Colne this afternoon as Town made it seven points from their first three matches. The opening five minutes saw both sides create chances. It was the hosts who threatened first when the lively Matthew Tindall advanced down the left and cut inside his effort from the edge of the area was cleared off the line by Anthony Dunne. A couple of minutes later Town broke the deadlock when Michael Kavanagh did well to reach a loose ball and he poked it forwards towards Leon Williams who held off two defenders to bear down on goal and slot home through the goalkeepers legs. Town had keeper Dale Newbrook to thank for maintaining their lead on 20 minutes when Tindall again cut inside from the left and fired a shot from the edge of the area which the stopper held onto. On 26 minutes skipper Shaun McKeegan picked out Williams with a fine ball which beat the defender and the striker fired just wide of the left hand upright under pressure from the advancing goalkeeper. Just after the half hour a Kavanagh went on a surging run down the beating a couple of defenders before cutting into the box, drawing the keeper and curling an effort which beat the stopper but thundered back off the angle of the post and crossbar and was cleared to safety. With the half drawing to a close Williams again found himself with a golden chance as he read the bounce of a long clearance well before attempting to lob the onrushing Jamie Scott but the ball went just wide of the Colne left post. The half ended with the hosts on the front foot and a series of corners saw Neil Stansfield twice find Joe Garvin with the fullback’s first effort being blocked for a second corner and the repeat set piece saw him fire over the crossbar. St Helens had to replace striker Andy Ledger before the restart and James Gardner entered the fray. Gardner was straight in the action as he did well to pick out Williams with a right wing cross but the hitman saw his effort deflected behind for a corner. Town had a lot of the possession but again were failing to turn this into many threats on goal. Carl Addison saw his run into the box be halted by Scott in the Colne goal but the keeper did not keep hold of the loose ball and Addison reclaimed the ball before seeing it turned behind by a recovering defender. A further blow to the Town cause came on 54 minutes when the dangerous Williams had to be replaced. Town had a great chance to put the game to bed with 11 minutes if normal time remaining as Gardner sent a ball to the far post from the right wing and Iain Dyson rose highest but could not get his effort on target and it sailed over the crossbar. Colne levelled matters on 84 minutes when substitute Andy Tinker advanced down the right and sent a testing ball into the box the ball reached the far post where Mark Threlfall applied a touch to send the ball home from point-blank range. Town were disappointed but not to be denied as they showed great character to bounce back from this set back to net a winner in the final minute of normal time. Phil Johnson won the ball on the left wing and sent the ball into the box towards Gardner whose effort was blocked and looped up into the air the ball was on target and the home stopper managed to touch it onto the crossbar but the ball broke off the frame of the goal towards Dyson who made no mistake to fire home the 88th goal of his Town career. Deep in added on time Newbrook again thwarted the hosts as Tinker cut inside from the right and fired an effort which the Town stopper held low to his left and after the visitors had seen out the final moments of the five added on minutes of the contest they secured three more points and rose to heady heights of fifth position in the League. For the second consecutive match Town took an early lead as the visiting back lines attempts to hold a high line were thwarted when a deep run from Carl Addison saw him collect the ball on the left hand side of the area and he curled a well placed effort into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Parity was restored soon afterwards when a right wing free kick found Anthony Brown in plenty of space to head the set piece home. That blip aside Town dominated the first half and it was only a surprise that it took Town so long to regain the lead. Chances came and went as first Karl Brown and then Leon Williams both failed to test the visiting stopper with headers. Against the run of play the visitors carved out an opening when former Town man Stephen Edwards advanced down the left before cutting inside and firing a cross across the edge of the 6 yards box which eluded all and ran to safety. Just after the half hour mark the sustained pressure told and a 90 second spell of Town possession in and around the AFC goal saw the lead restored. Michael Kavanagh powered down the right wing before finding Karl Brown, his shot was charged down and the ball found it’s way out to the left wing where after a series of passes it was sent back into the danger area where Kavanagh met it on the far post firing home before being crudely taken out by a late challenge from Richard Stenhouse, the visiting defender was lucky that the shot found its way home as he would have seen his contest ended at this point had it not done so. As the half drew to a close the ball was worked to Che Morgan on the edge of the area and his powerful effort was well held by Michael Christopher in the Liverpool goal. Moments later Williams was unlucky not to have netted when he reacted quickest to a through ball before his attempted lob went wide if the left hand upright. The Town lead was extended with two minutes of the half remaining as a fine flowing move culminated in Williams being released as Town again sprang the AFC offside trap and the striker showed great composure to round the keeper in some style before sending the ball into the now unguarded net. The second period was a frustrating one of the Town supporters as the team appeared to sit back rather than take the game to their beleaguered visitors. This dangerous game allowed AFC Liverpool to dominate the possession and against a more confident team Town would surely have paid the penalty. As it was Town created some good chances on the break and for all the Liverpool possession their attacks seemed to fizzle out rather meekly prior to the final quarter of the contest. Town custodian Dale Newbrook was largely untroubled until the 75th minute when Edwards met a right wing cross but the Town man was able to collect the effort. Indeed it was to be in the final moments of the contest that AFC came closest to reducing the arrears when Francis Barry got into the box on the right and he fired an effort that Newbrook pushed onto the right hand upright and the rebound pinged across the goal line before being cleared to safety. Town turned in a Jekyll and Hyde performance with the first half seeing some excellent play and domination of the ball by them and the second being the exact opposite with the mentality being that the match was over as a contest and to sit back on the lead. Town go top but defiantly food for thought! St Helens Town; Newbrook, Kavanagh, Morgan, Dyson, Flood, Dunne, McKeegan (C) Frazer, K.Brown (Larner 88), Williams, Addison. Town in the FA Cup . . . Today’s Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup – sponsored this season by Budweiser - brings Town together with Atherton LR for the first time in the competition. The clubs have met in North West Counties League matches on 41 previous occasions, most recently eleven days ago in a scoreless encounter at Crilly Park. Town have won 20 of those meetings, LR 11 and 10 games have been drawn. If today’s game is drawn, there will be a replay at Atherton next Tuesday. Prize money of £750 awaits today’s winners, as well as a Preliminary Round tie away to Cammell Laird on 3rd September. Only two seasons ago, Town crashed out of the FA Cup at Lairds, losing 3-1 in a disappointing First Qualifying Round match, having previously seen off Parkgate and Colwyn Bay in earlier rounds. Town have featured regularly in the First Qualifying Round since the club was re-formed in 1946. Their debut game in the FA Cup in 1947/48 resulted in a loss to Prescot Cables but in 1948/49, they won through three rounds, including a 1-0 win at Formby, but Bangor City (a frequent stumbling block over the next few years) won 3-0 at Hoghton Road in the Second Qualifying Round. The following year, in Bert Trautmann’s final match for Town, Bangor City again won 3-0 at Hoghton Road, in the First Qualifying Round. In 1952/53, a trip to Bangor resulted in a 2-0 defeat and the following year the clubs met again in the Preliminary Round at City Road: the game ended 2-2, but Town lost the replay 5-1. The next occasion Town reached the First Qualifying Round was in 1957/58, when they lost 3-5 at home to Llandudno and the same team put Town out the following season at the Council Field, this time by 3-0. Between 1961/62 and 1970/71, Town had the good fortune to avoid the Preliminary Round altogether, but only three times did they progress to the Second Qualifying Round, where they lost at Altrincham (4-1 in 1964/65) and at home twice to Skelmersdale United, 0-3 in 1965/66 and 0-1 in 1968/69. Prescot Cables (twice), Ashton United (twice), Earlestown, Rhyl, Chorley, Droylsden and Rossendale United were our conquerors in between. Skelmersdale again, Rhyl once more, New Brighton, Oswestry (after two replays) and Macclesfield accounted for Town at the First Qualifying stage in the remaining years of the 1970s. The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade for Town in the FA Cup. In 1980/81, wins at Southport (3-1) and Leyland Motors (4-0) set up a Third Qualifying Round clash against Fleetwood Town at Hoghton Road, but Town went out 0-1. Although a 4-0 defeat at home to Bootle in 1982/83 was a disappointing result, two years later a 2-0 win over Congleton led to a Second Qualifying Round game at Formby, where another 1-0 defeat was the order of the day. 1985/86 saw Town get within touching distance of the First Round Proper when wins at Colwyn Bay by 3-0, at home to Eastwood Hanley (2-0) and at Leek Town (1-0) took Town to the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first and only time in their history. Morecambe were the opponents and a 1-1 draw was achieved at Christie Park. York City awaited the winners in the First Round but, sadly, Town slipped to a 1-0 home defeat in the replay. The Second Qualifying Round was reached again the following year (Town’s FA Vase winning season) when, having thumped Heanor Town 6-0, Armthorpe Welfare were the winners in another Hoghton Road replay. 1987/88 saw another memorable campaign as Town reached the Third Qualifying Round, going out 2-3 at Northwich Victoria, having seen off Ilkeston after two replays and Horwich RMI after another drawn game. The last two decades have seen only modest progress by Town in the premier knock-out competition. On only 4 occasions since 1987 have St. Helens reached the Second Qualifying Round and every time the club has been beaten. In 1993/94, there was a 2-1 defeat at Knowsley United, Ryhope CA won 2-1 in 1997/98, Droylsden 6-0 in 1998/99 and, most recently, in 2005/06, having defeated Crook Town 3-0 in the Preliminary Round and Northallerton Town 3-2 away after a 3-3 home draw, Alfreton Town were 2-0 winners at Knowsley Road. Last season, Town beat Nostell Miners Welfare in a penalty shoot out, following extra time in a replay, then drew with Glossop North End in the last ever game at Knowsley Road. Extra time was again required in the replay following Glossop’s last gasp equaliser, but Town crashed out 3-1 If Atherton LR can be overcome today, Town can look forward to a trip through the tunnel to avenge their 2009 defeat at Kirklands. The ultimate ambition is to reach the First Round proper for the first time and the chance to take on Football League opposition.
