Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Rossendale United. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. It has been a mixed start to 2011 for Town as we started the year here at Edge Green Street on Bank Holiday Monday with an excellent 1-0 victory over near rivals Bootle a game marked with a couple of fine debuts from newcomers Mike Grogan and Chris McGann, who netted the only gaol of the game after 50 minutes to secure the first three points of the year. We followed this with a trip to Flixton last Saturday. The squad was depleted with the likes of Luke Faulkner. Che Morgan, Mike Fargher, Mike Kavanagh, Peter Birch, Mike Deakin and others missing for one reason or another. We fell behind after a quarter of an hour to the first of a brace from Premier Division top goalscorer Astley Mulholland but a sublime piece of skill from Iain Dyson drew the sides level. Town dominated the remainder of the first period but it took until the last minute of the half for the visitors to finally take the lead. Good work from Lee Owens found Liam Pearson through on goal and it was Dyson who was again to find the net profiting from the home keepers parry of Pearson’s effort to tap home. If Town had dominated vast periods of the first half then the reverse was to be true in the second period as less than five minutes after the restart Mulholand netted his second of the match to draw the hosts level before a goal with a quarter of the game to play saw Flixton regain the lead and ultimately gain all three points. Hopefully the squad will see some of the previously mentioned unavailable members back in the fold this afternoon as we host Rossendale United. Our visitors have had a torrid time since returning to the Vodkat League and defeat by fellow strugglers Ashton Athletic on Saturday saw them fall to bottom of the table. CA belated congratulations to Ben Kay who was the club’s Player of the Month for November and will shortly receive his prize from Johnsons Toyota Liverpool. Lets get behind the lads this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends from Rossendale United. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and that we are all treated to an entertaining encounter. Thankfully we’ve seen a return to football after the recent snow, ice and waterlogged pitches and I must first apologise for the lack of a match programme at our last game against Bootle – unfortunately circumstances beyond our control meant we failed to produce for only the second time in five seasons! Our last three encounters have seen mixed fortunes with our departure from the FA Vase before Christmas being one of the low points of the season. Having had the game postponed on a couple of occasions due to heavy snow there was a miraculous recovery and the mid-week trip to Holbrook eventually went ahead. The combination of an early departure, work commitments, suspensions and injuries led to an under strength Town bowing out 4-0 to a strong-looking Holbrook side who will now play Lancing FC next weekend. Incidentally, congratulations to Runcorn Town who became the only Vodkat League club to make it to the FA Vase 4th Round when they ousted Gornal Athletic 0-3 last Sunday. Former Town player Danny Salt is the Runcorn’s Assistant Manager and we wish them well for the remainder of the competition The weather wiped out the whole Vodkat League Christmas programme and we eventually got back to action for the visit of Bootle on Monday 3rd January. Town ran out 1-0 victors with the visitors having plenty of possession but lacking any real threat. As well as an excellent all-round performance from the team, there were great debuts for Chris McGann, who scored the games only goal, along with Mike Grogan. Last Saturday saw Town travel to Flixton looking to complete the double over the Manchester outfit but we left disappointed after a 3-2 reverse. All had looked well at half time as Town had hit back from an early goal to lead with two strikes from Iain Dyson and having dominated the final 25 minutes of the first half no-one could have anticipated the lackluster second half performance. Flixton hit back at the start of the second half and had a couple of elements of good fortune for their winner midway through the half – first a non-existent ‘advantage’ was played by the referee on the edge of the home side penalty box and within 15 seconds a Flixton breakaway saw a deflected cross nestle in the corner of Dale Newbrook’s net. Today’s visitors are having a tough campaign both on and off the pitch with results seeing them currently bottom of the Premier Division. Last Saturday’s vital ‘six-pointer’ with Ashton Athletic at Dark Lane went the way of the visitors 1-2 and saw them leapfrog ‘Dale at the basement. Late

October saw Town ran out 2-4 winners at Rossendale with goals from Liam Pearson (2), Ian Frazer and Daley Woods. Off the pitch today’s visitors have seen some significant departures with Chairman, Secretary and a number of other matchday volunteers stepping down in recent weeks – whatever the result today we wish the club well for the future. On the player front we’ve seen a few new additions to the squad which include the previously mentioned Chris McGann who joins from Prescot Cables and Mike Grogan from Warrington Town who have also been joined by Ricky Taylor (Knowsley South), James Croxton (Waterloo Dock) and ex-Wigan Athletic player Andy Morris who has joined from Ford Motors. Marc Stephens has left the club and joined the Evo-Stick outfit Cammell Lairds, we wish him well for the future. Today should see the return of Mike Fargher who has now completed a three match suspension which has taken several weeks! Next Saturday see the lads make the journey to Stone Dominoes looking for some revenge for the 0-2 defeat here at Ashton in early December. Following that we’ve a break from league action as we travel to Division One leaders AFC Blackpool in the 3rd Round of the Vodkat League Challenge Cup on Saturday 29th January. On Wednesday 2nd February Town host Tranmere Rovers in the Quarter Finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup – we’re hoping for a bumper crowd so please publicise the Don’t forget Andy Langley is still looking for new members and collecting monies for our monthly 100+ Club Draw – January’s draw will take place after the game at Blackpool. In Town Today . . .

In Town Today . . . Formed back in 1898, Rossendale United Football Club have had a long and eventful existence which has seen a lot of success, but also long periods of hardship that has brought the clubs existence in to doubt on many occasions. Their first competitive fixture took place on the 3rd September 1898 which ended in a 3-1 home win over Oswaldtwistle Rovers with Jack Read having the honour of scoring the clubs first ever goal. Part way through their first season, Rossendale were invited to take over the fixtures of Darwen Reserves in the Lancashire Combination, as they had withdrawn from the League. The club took up the offer, but struggled at the higher level of competition winning just two games out of 17 played. 1899/1900 brought a third new League, and the first silverware to the club. The Central Lancashire League Championship was won at the first attempt, a

feat that would have been repeated the following season but for teams withdrawing part way through the competition meaning the loss of vital points which were to prove costly at the end. In 1901/02 Rossendale United began their long association with the Lancashire Combination. The club played in the League for 69 years until they left to join the Cheshire County League in 1970. Success was spread pretty thin on the ground during those years, one Division One Championship win in 1926/27, Runners-Up in 1954/55 and a Division Two Championship in 1956/57 being the only League success. The Combination Cup was also won twice, in 1929 and 1944, with Rossendale bringing home the Lancashire Junior Cup in 1912 thanks to a 2-1 win over Eccles Borough in the Final. It was also during that time the clubs greatest ever goal scorer, Bob Scott, played for Rossendale United. Between 1959 and 1974 he netted 223 goals in just 203 appearances, including an astonishing 72 goals in the 1959/60 season. It was when the club left the Combination for the Cheshire League in 1970 that success started to come. The Championship was won at the first attempt in 70/71, with Runners-Up spot claimed in 71/72 and 73/74. Eight other trophies were to arrive at Dark Lane in just five seasons. The Cheshire League Cup, Cheshire League Challenge Shield, Lancashire Floodlit Trophy (twice), Lancashire Floodlit League, Lancashire Junior Cup and Ashworth Cup (twice) were won by arguably the greatest Rossendale United side of all time. There were also two memorable FA Cup runs in the early seventies. The Second Round was reached in 1971/72 before defeat by Bolton Wanderers in front of 12,000 at Gigg Lane brought the run to an end. The other was in 75/76 when Shrewsbury Town claimed a controversial 1-0 win in the First Round to sneak through. The cup run of 75/76 proved to be the last throw of the dice from that successful side as financial difficulties struck the club hard. Matters came to a head in February 1978 when the players walked out the night before the home game against would be Champions Marine. A scratch side managed to score two goals, the only problem being that Marine managed to score 14! The club staged something of a recovery at the start of the eighties as Glyn Watson managed to bring some respectability back to the side. Trouble wasn’t far away though, and 1981/82 brought a high court battle for the club’s Dark Lane home. During this time Rossendale United played their home games at Droylsden, and despite all the problems had their most successful season for a number of years. They finished fifth in the League and embarked on a FA Trophy run which took them to the Second Round before losing 1-0 at Slough Town. In 1982 Rossendale United became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, and were placed in the Second Division on ground grading. Promotion to their rightful place in Division One was achieved in 1985/86 when they finished Runners-up to Kirkby Town. This proved to be the start of another successful period in the clubs history. 1986/87 brought a comfortable mid table finish, plus an eventful FA Vase run which eventually ended in Round Five at Emley.

. . . Rossendale United NWCFL Division One Runners-Up spot was claimed in 87/88, Rossendale losing out to Colne Dynamoes on goal difference for the title. They went one better the season after, claiming the Championship and setting a couple of League records on the way. They remained unbeaten in the League until February, a run spanning 22 games, and set a new points record of 56 from just 34 matches (in the days of two points for a win). With the title came promotion to the Northern Premier League First Division (now UniBond League) and a respectable mid-table finish in their first season. 1990/91 proved to be the start of the decline as the club struggled both on and off the pitch. The extra cost of the higher League, combined with falling gates and increasingly poor performances on the field led to the inevitable relegation back to the NWCFL in 1992/93. The club’s final season in the NPL was a shambles. Three managers failed to halt the slide as the campaign ended with 18 straight defeats in the club’s worst ever season. Back in the NWCFL for the 93/94 season, the club spent heavily to try to gain an immediate return to the NPL. Atherton LR pipped them to promotion as Rossendale finished Runners-up. They did however win the Challenge Cup, beating St Helens Town 1-0 in a drab Final at Gigg Lane. The cost of that season had a tremendous effect on the club. With little or no money, the facilities at Dark Lane fell into disrepair, as the team struggled to avoid relegation. Rossendale United celebrated their centenary season in 1998/99, and until new owners took over at the end of the campaign, it could well have been the last season in the club’s history. New owners brought a fresh outlook and the clubs fortunes on and off the field took a turn for the better. The installation of Jim McCluskie as manager saw Rossendale claim the NWCFL Division one title in 2000/01, and following an excellent start in 01/02 ‘Dale topped the NPL Division one table in the early stages of the campaign. Unfortunately, key players were lost through injury and the club dropped down the table but still finished a highly respectable ninth place, their highest ever finish in the non-league pyramid. The next three seasons saw a procession of managers at the club as they all tried, and failed to repeat the success of McCluskie’s side. 2004/05 should have seen the club relegated back to the North West Counties League but an off the pitch reprieve saved them from the drop as they retained their UniBond status. Following a disappointing start to the 2005/06 season, the board acted swiftly to bring in former Ramsbottom United manager Derek Egan in an attempt to revive the club’s fortunes. Egan managed this and at one point a place in the end of season play-offs looked likely as the side embarked on an impressive run off results. 2006/07 saw another good season on the pitch, but great turmoil off it. But for a bad run during February and March the club would have reached the play offs, the side eventually finishing ninth. The future of Rossendale was once again hanging by a thread, but a new board was put together and a deal was made to save the club. The board’s first job was to retain the services of manager Derek Egan, a job they successfully achieved. After the turmoil at the end of 2006/07 season Rossy took some time to get going during 2007/08, but eventually finished a creditable 9th. With things coming together off the field hopes were high at the beginning of the 2008/09 season but Rossy never really got going after a slow start and when the credit crunch began to bite Rossy cut their playing budget and manager Derek Egan resigned. Phil Eastwood took over as player- manager and enjoyed some initial success but after Christmas a run of only 2 wins in 19 games saw Rossy slip into a straight relegation dog fight with fast improving Salford who were to overtake Rossy on the last day of the season. Fortunately for Rossendale there were only 12 clubs eligible for 14 promotion places at step 4 so as the club with the next best points per game record of the relegated clubs the FA reprieved Rossy. The late reprieve gave new manager John Hughes a massive task in building a squad to compete at UniBond level in 2009/10 and the club got off to a poor start and occupied bottom spot for much of the season, improved form in early spring saw them move briefly off the bottom but the task was too great and the club finished bottom 3 points adrift on 25 points. Manager John Hughes was hoping for better luck in his 2nd season in charge as Rossy looked to bounce back in the Vodkat League however continuing financial difficulties led to his dismissal after losing to local rivals Bacup in the FA Vase. New manager Paul Colgan’s job was made even more difficult when the board led by Chairman Steve Hobson resigned en mass before Christmas due to problems in the relationship between them and club owner Andrew Connolly.

Match Report Saturday 8th January 2011 Vodkat League, Premier Division Flixton 3-2 St Helens Town 1-0; Astley Mulholland 17 Minutes, 1-1; Iain Dyson 21 Minutes, 1-1; Iain Dyson 45 Minutes, 2-2; Astley Mulholland 48 Minutes, 3-2; Daniel McDonnell 68 Minutes Town fell to their first defeat of the New Year in a game of two halves at Valley Road this afternoon. The first real opening of the contest saw Ian Frazer play a right wing corner short to John Elias who beat his defender and his goal bound shot was parried by James Jowsie in the Flixton goal the ball broke towards Liam Pearson but his header was cleared from danger. The hosts started to take control of the game and threatened Astley Mulholland found himself through on goal but found himself denied by an excellent save from Dale Newbrook in the Town goal. The opening goal of the contest came after seventeen minutes when the hosts took advantage of a poor kick from Newbrook and some generous defending when a ball from the right wing found Mulholland unmarked in the centre and his effort just found the left hand corner of the net after Newbrook got a hand to his shot. The scores were level soon afterwards when Lee Owens sent a free kick forwards and Iain Dyson collected the loose ball using an excellent piece of skill to beat a defender before unleashing a powerful shot which beat Jowsie in the home goal. The remainder of the half belonged to the visitors as buoyed by the goal they dominated possession and looked to turn this superiority into goals. Town should have taken the lead Mike Grogan found Dyson with an excellent through ball and Dyson’s effort was saved by the home stopper the loose ball broke to Ricky Taylor who had the open goal on an angle in front of him but could only hit the upright with his effort. A free kick into the Flixton box five minutes from the interval saw the ball cleared to the edge of the penalty area and Frazer collected it before trying his luck but his effort went just wide of the left hand upright. In the last minute of the half Town went into the lead when Owens found Liam Pearson with an excellent ball and the strikers effort was parried by Jowsie breaking to Dyson who made no mistake slotting home the rebound to send the visitors into the interval with an advantage. The half time interval came at a bad time for Town and the hosts regrouped during the interval and levelled quickly after the restart as the league’s leading scorer Mulholland again netted three minutes after the restart. Ten minutes after the leveller Town carved out a good opening when a flowing move saw Chris McGann link with Pearson and the ball broke to Dyson whose effort was pushed away by the home stopper and eventually smuggled away from danger. Twenty minutes into the half Newbrook was on hand to keep the scores level as he was called into action to make a good one on one save from Kayde Coppin. The contest was to be settled on 68 minutes when the hosts got a couple of strokes of luck in the process of a move that started with the referee playing an “advantage” for Town on the edge of the Flixton area when there was no obvious opening for the visitors. A quick counter saw the hosts raid down the right and Daniel McDonnell’s cross took a wicked deflection on its way into the net to secure the points for the hosts. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league

clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners

. . . A Brief History Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Ninth place was achieved in 2009/10 but Bickerstaffe stepped down at the end of the season and Lee Riley was promoted to manager, with Phil Burton (ex-Prescot Cables) as his assistant. A number of new faces have joined the club, most significantly striker Liam Pearson and goalkeeper Dale Newbrook and this combination of youth and experience is looking to improve on last season’s progress. The Knowsley Road ground was vacated in August 2010, prior to its demolition, necessitating a temporary move to share Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street facilities, but Autumn 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

FA Vase Second Round - Eccleshill United 0 Runcorn Town 2 Runcorn Town's debut season in the FA Carlsberg Vase continues as they put in a convincing performance to beat KoolSport North East Counties Division One side Eccleshill United 2-0 in last night's Second Round tie. Runcorn went at their hosts from the start with Warren Bellew delivering a couple of quality crosses from the left hand side and Marvin Molyneux and Ste Latham both seeing shots deflected for corners. Tony Wynne went closest after 18 minutes when he raced onto Karl Wills' long clearance but failed to connect properly with his shot when well placed. Their defence was magnificent, limiting the hosts to just two long range efforts in the first half that

goalkeeper Karl Wills saved easily, but they were rocked after 21 minutes when Danny Dalton went over on his ankle - Runcorn's right back hobbling around for another 15 minutes before being replaced by Chris Brown.The inevitable goal after so much Runcorn pressure arrived after 29 minutes after Tony Wynne was felled in the box by a defender, with James McShane converting the penalty with confidence. Bellew also saw an effort deflected wide for a corner with Emini Adegbenro also going close with a shot across goal as Runcorn closed out a half in which they dominated. Whatever is in the half time tea in Yorkshire had an effect, with the second half much different from the first as the home side were on top for long periods. However, they failed to create any clear cut chances in the final third of the pitch with Wills largely untested apart from a couple of crosses he had to deal with. As the game progressed, Runcorn looked dangerous on the counter attack with Adegbenro twice shooting wide when well placed after being played in by Molyneux and substitute Connor Anderson respectively. Leading scorer McShane had the best effort of the lot when he got clear of the defence after chasing down a clearance, but with just Bell to beat he lobbed the ball wide of the goal. As the game entered the final five minutes, Eccleshill went for broke which in turn left space at the back. McShane should have doubled the lead when he controlled a cross from Anderson ball in the box before hitting the left hand post with a shot, with his effort rolling across the line before being gathered by Bell. However McShane did make the game safe as the clock ticked into the 90th minute after he broke clear of the defence from Chris Brown's through ball and slotted past the keeper for his 17th goal of the season. Tony Riley, Runcorn Town Chairman, said after the game: "It was a great team performance. I thought we dominated the first half and could have been 3-0 up with more accurate finishing. The second half however was dominated by Eccleshill, but good defensive play denied them any real chances. In the final minutes we scored the second goal to seal the tie. Our amazing first season in the Vodkat League continues, and the FA Vase run so far has surpassed all our expectations. My thanks go out to (manager) Simon Burton and the squad, not to mention the committee, for their hard work and enthusiasm so far." Martin Fallon, Runcorn Town Secretary, supported that view: "It was a strange game to watch in all honesty, going from having so much play and so many chances in the first half to a 'backs to the wall' job in the second half. Having scored 50 goals so far this season, it is usually the midfield and attack that get the plaudits, but the defence deserve enormous credit as they were superb last night. Eccleshill were on top for long periods but I cannot remember a single clear cut shot on target all night"."We have yet another away trip in the Third Round at Gornal Athletic. They are from the West Midlands Regional League, and they look like they are having a good season lying second in their league. However if we can continue our good form and players perform as they can do, it should be a good game and we can hopefully continue our progression in our first season in the Vase."

A look back at Hoghton Road 1946 A consortium of Sutton businessmen led by Mr George Fryer purchased the one time Sutton Cricket Club site from Pilkington Brothers, to re-form St Helens Town AFC. Extensive work is required to re-cultivate the pitch whilst essential buildings are erected from timber supplied by the local collieries. 1948 Supporters Club secure their own premises with the purchase of a timber building from RAF Haydock, which also acts as a refreshment bar. 1949 Supporters raise money to build a grandstand at a cost of £1000 whilst residue of the money is put into further development. Construction is subject to struct new legislation enforced by the close vicinity of the railway and concern for public safety following the pre-war disaster at Burnden Park, Bolton. hence a heavy duty concrete structure is specified. 1953 The whole estate is put up for sale whilst the team play home games at Pilkington's City Road ground. 1954 The sale is withdrawn due to pressure group led by Mr George Fryer. 1958 Small clubhouse incorporating officials dressing rooms and an office is erected. 1962 New 200 seater club is built on top of the training pitch. Burnley's ex-St Helens Town star John Connelly performs the opening ceremony. 1966 The club is extended, incorporating dressing rooms and a lounge area. 1972 Further extension of the club includes the relocation of both dressing rooms and stage. Liverpool's Ian St. John performs the opening ceremony. 1977 A new lounge is added plus a sauna build into the new dressing room block which also houses a new games and snooker facility. A running tack is laid around the pitch.

1978 The ground is completely walled in. 1982 Final phase of the club development is completed with a new roof and new toilet blocks. Covered accommodation built at the Hoghton Road end of the ground to enclose the refreshment bar. Sauna sold off. 1983 Elevated Director's box built over looking the pitch at the Hoghton Road end of the ground. 1984 New players' entrance constructed. 1988 Floodlighting system installed after months of fund-raising. Everton send a strong side to officially open the lights. Salford City are the first team to play Town under floodlights at Hoghton Road. 1990 Runcorn Highfield Rugby League Football Club outfit become tenants at Hoghton Road. 1994 Runcorn Highfield RLFC move to Prescot Cables and St Helens Greyhound Company join Town as tenants. Significant changes are made to the Hoghton Road ground as a new track is laid around the pitch. 1995 Players' entrance 'caged-in' as part of new FA ground Grading requirements. 1996 Floodlighting system upgraded and a new exterior wall is erected. Dressing rooms are upgraded. The ground is used as a location for an episode of the BBC hit comedy/drama series 'Common As Muck' 2000 The final game is played on Hoghton Road when Champions elect are beaten 1-0. St Helens Town relocate to Saints' Knowsley Road and the land is sold to Barratt Homes.

Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in

both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Liam Ryder: Another summer 2010 signing by Lee Riley, 22 year old Liam hails from Rainhill and is a strong and pacey defender who also has an eye for the odd goal. Peter Birch: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Had a spell with Town last season before moving onto Skelmersdale United. Started this season at Formby before rejoining at the start of October 2010. Che Morgan: A left-sided player who has operated at left back since his arrival from Prescot Cables in early November 2010. He is very comfortable on the ball and enjoys the odd foray down the left wing. Mike Kavanagh: Joined the Town ranks in September 2010. Can play as a striker or on the right side of midfield. A player who likes to attack defenders with his pace.

Makoto Uji: Joined Town in November 2010 from neighbours Prescot Cables - a skilful and highly competitive midfield player. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

A Great Start To The new Year For The Storks One of the form teams in the Premier Division are Padiham, whose impressive start to 2011 has seen them follow up a Bank Holiday 3-0 win at Colne with a fine 3-1 victory over league leaders New Mills at the Arbories. Saturday's win over the Millers was Padiham's fourth successive league win and manager Craig Chadwick is looking forward with confidence to the remainder of the season. Speaking after the New Mills game, Criag siad: "I'm delighted with the way we've been playing recently. It's taken a while to build the squad up and get players in, but

now I've got the squad I want. "We've got players playing for places now, there's a lot of competition, and we've now taken 19 points out of a possible 24. The performance at Colne was excellent and against New Mills, we turned in a great team performance. Jordan Hulme scored two great goals, both great strikes from outside box, but just as pleasing was the fact that apart from their goal, which was a good free kick, I didn't really feel we allowed them any other clear cut chances. That is a real positive to take from the game. "We've worked a lot on the back four, and cut out the silly mistakes that were happening, and now their decision making and work ethic is excellent. The last two results have given us a great platform to build on, and we still have some players out injured who have yet to come back, so it all bodes well for the rest of the season. It's important we keep the momentum going, but I believe that the last two results have proved we are as good as anyone in this league." Vodkat League Landmarks Rossendale United's 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Ashton Athletic arose in their 600th league game. The first of Dave Morris's two goals for Glossop North End, the second goal in their 3-0 win over Formby, was the Hillmens' 1600th league goal. Damian McDonald's winning goal for Flixton in their 3-2 win over St Helens Town was his side's 1300th league goal. Daniel Hewitt's goal for Abbey Hey in their 2-1 defeat at home to Oldham Boro was the club's 700th league goal. Padiham's impressive 3-1 win over New Mils was their 150th home league win. Winsford United's 3-0 win at Runcorn Linnets was their ninth away league win of the season, which equals their previous best in the top division of our league. They are just four away wins short of equalling their best ever record in the NWCFL of 13 away league wins in one season. Finally, thanks to Alsager Town Secretary Ken Stevenson, who contacted us to let us know of an unusual landmark in their 4-2 defeat at home to Bacup Borough. No less than three Alsager players made their 100th appearance for the club in the game - Nathan Griffiths, Kurtis Gill and David Chambers.

St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. Evo-Stik Premier League side Marine have confirmed the departure of central defender Michael Jackson, who has returned to Welsh Premier League Newtown. Jackson, 30, rejoined Marine in October after signing for the Welsh Club in the summer. Marine Chairman Paul Leary and Manager Kevin Lynch said in a joint statement: “We are bitterly disappointed in the untimely decision by Michael to

return to Welsh Football with Newtown. We had a commitment from Michael to stay with us through to the end of next season and we are both shocked by the u-turn made by him after such a short time with us. We appointed him captain and had plans to work together but for some reason he has decided to go back to Newtown." "We shall get on with the task of improving our league position with out him and we shall continue

to work as hard as ever to bring success to Marine.” Jackson received international clearance and was involved in Newtown’s game last Saturday which saw them fall to a 3-0 reverse at Port Talbot Town which sees them rooted to be bottom of the Welsh Premier League table.

Around The Grounds West Street - Winterton Rangers

The fourth game of Town’s FA Vase run saw us take the trip to Lincolnshire to take on Northern Counties East League Winterton Rangers. The trip to our destination saw us venture over the magnificent feet of engineering that is the Humber Bridge and our delight continued when we reached the clubs West Street base. Tucked away off the main road West Street opens up to reveal the secret hidden behind, a

gap opens out into the clubs car park and in front of you is the entrance turnstile. Once through the barrier and into the ground the pitch is in front of you running lengthways away from you to the far end of the site. Back on yourself in an “L” shape behind the near goal as you enter is the clubhouse and dressing rooms. The club has not long been refurbished and is a credit to the club being light and welcoming. There is a partition which appears to be a wall but is removable which opens the club up to a capacity of around 200. Venturing back outside the ground is impressive and tidy with hard standing across the whole site, there is no cover behind either goal and the pitch is enclosed by a breeze-block surround the like of which I have never seen before. On the left hand side is an impressive main stand which is seated and on the opposite touchline is the other stand on the site which is a covered stepped terrace with ample space of the paying gate. This ground is easily the best we have seen on our travels this season and a credit to the Winterton Rangers committee who have spent time effort and money on the facility in recent years.

Programme Review Part 6 4-0 – I still can’t believe it! Just as Town were looking forward to facing Lancing in the last 32 of the FA Vase, the poor weather relented for a few days and off we trudged to Holbrook Sports on Wednesday, 15th December for our twice-delayed Third Round tie. A win against more Step 6 opposition was very much expected, but a lethargic performance from a team badly affected by the non-availability of a number of key players resulted in a very disappointing defeat, just as the weather closed in again to rule out any football until January. We now have to reflect on what might have been for another year but before we do so, let’s have a look back to the season we won the Vase and the programmes to mark the season’s achievement. St. Helens Town were participating in the FA Vase for the first time in 1986/87, even though the competition itself was in its 13th year, having replaced the old FA Amateur Cup. St. Helens had the luck of the draw, being drawn at home in the first five rounds, including an Extra-Preliminary Round tie against Colne Dynamoes, who were themselves to taste FA Vase success the following season. The tie was only settled in Town’s favour 5-4 after extra time. The programme for the game was the standard Town issue of the time, comprising 20 pages, including a glossy blue and white cover. The price was 20p. Programme editor and press officer 24 years ago was none other than current Town president, Jim Barrett. The Town programme was much the same for all the home ties. Half of the inside pages were pre-printed with advertisements: full page ads were taken by Ayrshire Metal Products of Pocket Nook Street, St. Helens Glass and Jon Graham Associates, (both of whom were Town’s main sponsors that season and, indeed, the cover illustration featured two players, one wearing a St. Helens Glass shirt and the other bearing the name of Jon Graham Associates), R. Seddon and Sons Ltd., who were glass benders and glass bullion manufacturers, whilst the back cover was taken up with the North West Counties Football League sponsors, Bass. Rival brewers Burtonwood had a half-page advert, as did Geoffrey McLean who was a Dairyman and also a Town committee member. Another advert featured the programme printers, Sponsorship Publications of Alfreton, Derbyshire, whilst another was taken by Colourplan Design and Print, who went on to print many of the future glossy FA Premier League issues. The editorial in the Colne programme mentioned the Wembley date in April as the season’s ultimate prize, setting the scene for the now famous Vase run. Opponents Warrington Town were also mentioned, as they had reached the previous season’s semi-final, only to fall to holders Halesowen Town, who had beaten Town’s NWC rivals Fleetwood in the 1985 Final. League tables in this issue showed Warrington Town top of the NWC Second Division, with Colne in third, whilst St. Helens Town were 10th of 20 clubs in the First Division. Similar programmes were produced for subsequent games against General Chemicals in the Preliminary Round (also won after extra-time), Blackpool Wren Rovers, Guisborough and

. . . Programme Review Wythenshawe Amateurs. Town’s first away tie was at Wisbech Town of the Building Scene Eastern League. The programme was in many ways similar to the Town programme, pre-printed adverts amid duplicated pages of typewritten text, providing good value at 20p. There were several photographs, including two of St. Helens, as well as a potted history of the old and current Town clubs. Two further home draws then followed against Rainworth Miners Welfare and Falmouth Town, but St. Helens supporters must have been aghast at the prospect of an away replay in the South of Cornwall in the Quarter-Final. Falmouth’s programme was printed on amber coloured paper. Eight pages of advertisements enclosed four pages of text, price not stated. On to the Semi-Final and a two-legged affair against Emley. The FA themselves produced a brochure to publicise both semi-finals (Warrington Town met Collier Row in the other tie) but the standard Town issue was produced for the first leg at Hoghton Road. The away leg in West Yorkshire saw a 20-page programme, with the front cover and centre sheet printed maroon on light blue paper, the other twelve pages duplicated on white paper, which sold at 20p. Prior to the Final at Wembley, the FA produced a small booklet to confirm the arrangements for the big day. This comprised a blue card cover, enclosing 8 white pages, on which were set out a strict timetable for the build-up, a diagram setting out the positions of the players, substitutes, captains and managers prior to the kick-off and confirmation that the referee could not start the game until the principal guest, Ted Drake, had taken his seat in the Royal Box. Then followed the detail of the pre-match presentations, catering arrangements and the presentation of the trophy and medals and directions for the band, interval entertainment and the stewards. The programme for the final was priced at 60p and was a glossy publication, running to 24 pages. St. Helens Glass took a full page advert in the Wembley programme, as did Warrington’s main sponsors Greenall Whitley and the back cover featured a colour advert for Budweiser. There were the usual Wembley programme features such as pen pictures and team photographs, also two action shots from each of the Semi-Finals. GLYN JONES

New Year Cheer At Chadderton An unexpected financial windfall, and a position among the promotion contenders in Division One, means everyone at Chadderton is starting 2011 in a positive mood. The windfall arrived courtesy of FA Cup sponsors and energy suppliers E-On by way of an "Energy Efficiency Makeover", which as well as developing facilities at the club's ground, will deliver ongoing long term benefits as Secretary Louise Robson explained. "The makeover prize was a complete surprise, and the whole saga began when one of our junior team managers saw a competition on the FA website, and entered the club for it. I then got a call a few weeks back from E-On to say we had reached the

final ten, and from there they then sent some representatives to come and do an inspection at the ground to see what sort of work they could do for us. "After that, we then we got the call just before Christmas to say we had won an Energy Efficiency Makeover. It means that E-On will be carrying out a lot of work at the club to install energy efficient equipment. The work will include thermostatic controls, new light switches, new showers in the changing rooms, a new boiler, solar panels - although I don't know how much use we'll make of those in Chadderton - and various other pieces of work. "In total the amount of work we will have completed has been valued at about £40,000 and will take about two weeks to complete, and we expect the work to start this week. Ongoing of course, we will also benefit from reduced energy costs as a result of the work, so there is a long term benefit to the club, as it should generate some extra income by way of us having reduced energy bills. "We have been told that once the work has been completed, there will be a grand opening, when the FA Cup will be brought up to the ground and will be accompanied by a "football legend" - we don't know who that will be, that's as much as we know. We did ask if that could all be done on a matchday, but because of prior engagements it has to be done in midweek. "But after years of bad news at Chadderton, it's nice to have a bit of luck for a change." The club's problems in securing its future have been well documented on the league website in the past, but Louise reports that progress is being made. "We are a lot more secure than we have been for a while, it's just a case of securing the lease on the land at the ground now. Before all the trouble started a couple of years ago, the land was designated as a public open space, and we had to go through a long process of having that changed so we could get a long term lease on the ground. "That request is now going through the process of being approved by the council, but it has to go to public consultation before the land can officially be removed from being designated as a public open space, so that is next hurdle. At the moment we just on a rolling 12 month lease, which means we can't really plan to develop the ground, so that limits us to what we can do right now. But a couple of years ago we weren't really sure if the club was going to survive, so we are in a much more stable position now, and doing well in the league is an added bonus. It's looking a lot rosier now."

A man asks his wife what she would like for her next birthday. “I’d love to be ten again,” she tells him, wistfully. When the day arrives he gets up early and pours her a big bowl of Frosties for breakfast, followed by two boiled eggs with bread soldiers, and orange juice. Then he whisks her off to the local theme park. What a day! He takes her on every ride: the runaway train, the pirates’ galleon, the corkscrew roller coaster, and many more. Several hours later she staggers out of the theme park, her head reeling and her stomach feeling upside down. Relentless in his efforts to make his wife’s wish come true, he then takes her to a McDonald’s restaurant where he orders her a Happy Meal with extra fries, along with a

large chocolate milkshake. Then he takes her to the cinema to see the latest Disney feature, complete with popcorn and a fizzy drink. Finally, she wobbles home with her husband and collapses into bed, absolutely exhausted. He tucks her in, kisses her gently on the forehead and whispers, “Well, darling, what was it like being ten again?” She opens her eyes, glares up at him and replies, “You buffoon - I meant my dress size!” Quasimodo passes Esmerelda on the stairs to the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral and notices she is carrying a wok in her hand. “Are we having stir-fry noodles for tea?” enquires Quasimodo. “Certainly not,” replies Esmerelda. “I’m going to iron your shirts.” A newspaper correspondent visiting Afghanistan for a second time notices that, since the fall of the Taliban, wives who used to walk ten paces behind their husbands are now walking ten paces in front. Intrigued by such a change in culture, he approaches one of the men and asks if it’s a sign of a new equality. “Oh, no,” replies the man. “Landmines.” A man pushing a trolley round a supermarket turns the corner at the end of an aisle and collides with another man pushing a trolley in the opposite direction. “I’m ever so sorry,” he apologises. “I was trying to find my wife and just wasn’t looking where I was going.” “Oh, that’s alright,” says the other man. “Funnily enough, I’ve lost my wife in here too.” “What does she look like?” asks the first man. “She’s gorgeous, in her early twenties, with blonde hair, a terrific figure, and legs up to her armpits,” replies the second man. “What does your wife look like?” he asks in return. “I may have seen her on my travels.” “Oh, forget about her,” replies the first man, his eyes lighting up. “Let’s just find yours.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
