Dear family and friends in Jesus Christ…, The day before All Saints Day is called Halloween in the secular world. The name is Christian and means the Eve of All Hallows (All Hallows Eve), the Eve of All Saints, but that is the only Christian element in it. All the rest that accompanies Halloween is of pagan origin and it goes back to the time before Christianity. It was a pagan Celtic feast. The Celts believed that after sunset on Samhain, which we now called Halloween, the spirits of the dead and evil spirits roamed the skies seeking to harm humans, especially if the dead had been harmed by them. To protect themselves they disguised themselves by dressing up in costumes and carried lights inside turnips. In order to turn a pagan feast into a Christian feast, the Church placed the feast of All Saints on November 1st, to coincide with the pagan celebration. Children celebrate and have fun on Halloween, but it would be a pity if they did not know the Christian origin of this feast. Throughout the liturgical year we celebrate the feast and memorials of canonized saints, but today we remember and honor all saints who lived a holy life and believed to be in heaven. So if your children are celebrating Halloween and know nothing about All Saints, please explain it to them. After all we are Christians, so let us not celebrate as pagans, but let us celebrate All Saints. All baptized Christians who have died and are now with God in glory are considered saints. All Saints Day is intended to honor the memory of countless unknown and un-canonized saints who have no feast days. Today we thank God for giving ordinary men and women a share in His holiness and Heavenly glory as a reward for their Faith. This feast is observed to teach us to honor the saints, both by imitating their lives and by seeking their intercession for us before Christ, the only mediator between God and man (I Tm 2:5). The Church reminds us today that God’s call for holiness is universal, that all of us are called to live in His love and to make His love real in the lives of those around us. Holiness is related to the word wholesomeness. We grow in holiness when we live wholesome lives of integrity, truth, justice, charity, mercy, compassion, and sharing our blessings with others. We heard in today’s gospel Jesus giving us the beatitudes. The beatitudes are the pathway to holiness. They are the eight-fold ways to reach heaven. The call of the beatitudes is to fulfill all the blessings and to reap all the promises. “What is it like to be a Christian saint?” “It is like being a Halloween pumpkin. God picks you from the field, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off you by baptism and by inviting you to confess your sins and seek reconciliation. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out the yucky stuff. He removes the pulp of impurity and injustice and seeds of doubt, hate, and greed from you. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light of holiness or Holy Spirit inside you to shine for the entire world to see by your serving and sharing love, mercy and forgiveness.” This is the Christian idea behind the carved pumpkins during the Halloween season. Dear family let us follow the saints. The saints are our role models. They teach us by their lives that Christ’s holy life of love, mercy and unconditional forgiveness can, with the grace of God, be lived by ordinary people from all walks of life and at all times. So we all can be a saint and that is our vocation as Christians, to be a saint. Fr. Tom Pastor, St. James Roman Catholic Church "Do everything for the greater glory of God!"

Our Online Giving system provides you the opportunity to give to our special collections in addition to regular offerings. You can choose to do a One Time Gift or a special remembrance, or you can set up regularly scheduled contributions that are withdrawn on the date you specify in the system. We are happy to announce that we are live-streaming our daily 12:10pm, Saturday 5:30pm, Sunday 10:00am and our Mass of Remembrance celebrated on the first Saturday of each month. Please visit our website www.stjamesonline.org. You may also view the Masses on Facebook and Youtube.
“Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely ) because of me.” Matthew 5:11 We are all at different points on the path to holiness, on getting to Heaven and becoming a saint. Part of the journey is begin mocked and ridiculed by others. When this happens, how do you respond? Do you become silent? Do you react in anger or do you react with love? Fortunately, as one Body of Christ, we are united with the saints already in Heaven. Ask your favorite saint for guidance in defending the Faith.

Before all weekend masses the Altar Rosary Society will be leading us in reciting the rosary. In the Catholic Church, the rosary is one of the most cherished prayers. For us, it is a powerful prayer of intercession to the Blessed Mother. Praying the rosary is promoted as a means of strengthening one’s faith, resisting evil, growing spiritually, and generally benefiting society. Please join us 25 minutes before each mass.

As we all know, 2020 is a year like no other. The neediest of friends and neighbors in our township need your generosity like never before. Your goodness every year is amazing and so appreciated. This year, we have to modify our Thanksgiving and Christmas programs because of COVID and we have to limit contact with others. Instead of the Giving Trees that are typically in our church, it is necessary to try something different this year. We will be purchasing gift cards for the families who will then do their own shopping, either in stores or online. However, we will need to raise money to support this undertaking. If you would like to “adopt” a family of four for Christmas, please consider a donation of $100.00 to cover the cost of four gift cards. We will certainly be grateful for whatever donation you are able to offer. I know some of you may have fallen on hard times during this pandemic, so what I ask of you is your prayers for the success of this program. That would be a “gift” in itself! We have approximately 300 gift cards to purchase for 125 families that meet the criteria in the township this year. Please put your donation in an envelope clearly marked “Sharing Our Blessings” to insure it gets credited to the proper account. You can drop it in the collection basket or drop it off to the parish office before Friday, November 20th. We will use the monetary donations to purchase the gift cards through St. James School Scrip program. Not only will you be helping the less fortunate, you will be helping to benefit our school, as well.
If you would like to donate a turkey for Thanksgiving, please bring it to the food pantry before Saturday, November 21st, which is the day of distribution to the less fortunate of our community. Food pantry hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9:00 to 11:00 am and Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. We will also be available at the pantry on Monday the 16th and Tuesday the 17th in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. With grateful hearts we thank you for your help with this undertaking!
St. James School Tuition Angel Fund
Thank you for your generous donations to our Parish Tuition Assistance fund. We have utilized all the monies raised to date for the 2020-2021 school year and we continue to raise funds in anticipation of the needs of our families. Your continued support is appreciated. All checks are to be made payable to St. James School, and note “Tuition Assistance” in the memo section. Your gift is tax deductible. With a grateful heart ~ Father Thomas
