Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,

be our protection against the wickedness and

snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we

humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heav-

enly host, by the power of God, cast into hell

Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about

the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Oración a San Miguel Arcángel

Debemos estar conscientes amados hermanos y her-

No

Te invito a abrir tu corazón a Dios.

Mass: Virtual Viewing, Did you know that you are

attending mass when you watch it LIVE on your TV or on

your computer or other device? That's right, you are in at-

tendance at the mass while it is being said anywhere in the

world through our union with Christ in His mystical body.

But remember, it must be LIVE, occurring at the same

time you are viewing it. If it is a video of a mass pre-

viously said, you are watching a video of the mass.

You are not actually attending the mass since it has

already been completed.

Isn't that truly wonderful! We can attend mass at

Lourdes or Knock or EWTN or the Vatican or England or

the Philippines or anywhere else in the world as long as it is

LIVE while it is being broadcast throughout the world. Does

that take away our Sunday obligation? NO! We must still

attend mass on Sunday. Of course if we are sick or simply

cannot get to a mass on Sunday, we are not obligated to

go. And with this present Covid 19 pandemic, we are not

obligated. If we are healthy and our health is not compro-

mised, please attend mass if there is room based on social

distancing. If we cannot attend, we should be able to find a

LIVE mass on TV (you tube) etc. somewhere in the world or

on St. James the Apostle site: 7:00am and 6pm four days of

the week , and weekend masses.

What about during the week? Why not attend mass while

getting ready for work or getting the children ready for

school, or having coffee and breakfast. Even when traveling

to work in the car, why not listen to a mass LIVE on the radio.

We can be sure that God will love our gift of attending His

sacrifice of the mass. Surely He will bless us and our families

for the extra effort we are making and the prayers we are

saying. We must remember that the mass is the GREATEST

prayer on earth. If we are retired or not working, what will

we say to Christ when he asked us did you attend mass

sometimes during the week? How will we answer that

question? Extra efforts probably will please the Lord

because we are doing it out of love for him. Would

we visit a close friend or call them during the week to

say “Hi.” and have a conversation?

How is the mass the greatest prayer on earth? We

are directly connected to Christ's sacrifice on the cross for

our salvation. How is that possible? God, in Jesus, is NOT

bound by time. All time is known to God. Since we are with

God through our baptism into the body of Christ, we are

connected to his death on the Cross. We are united through

time at the changing of the bread and wine into the body

and blood of Christ. It is our faith and a mystery, created

and revealed by Jesus at the last supper. This is the tran-

substantiation, the substance is changed but the appearance

of bread and wine remains the same. It is really the body

and blood of Christ.

Finally, why physically go to mass if we can go virtually?

The first major item is that we can receive the body and

blood of Christ! And second, we are witnesses and support

to our fellow Catholics of our faith and belief in the Eucharis-

tic Mass. May we frequently attend this boundless prayer to

honor and love Jesus and for our own souls.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

It was a normal day by all accounts, but John just wasn’t

feeling himself. He was a little lightheaded and out of

sorts. Later in the afternoon, he experienced a sharp

pain in his chest and arm. Quick thinking and action

brought John to the emergency department with a di-

agnosis of a significant heart attack. Surviving this or-

deal, he found himself face to face with his cardiologist,

having an honest conversation about things that need-

ed to change. “I came close to death,” John found him-

self thinking. Then came the remorse. He was a young

man with a loving wife and children who were very

close to facing life without him. John found himself with

intense sorrow for living an unchecked and self-

indulgent life that almost brought him to his demise.

He wanted to change.

We all have our wake-up calls. We have experiences

and encounters that force us to really think twice about

choices we have made and directions we have taken.

Often, we find ourselves looking at those we have hurt

square in the eye and wallowing in our foolishness. We

regrettably realize that we have allowed our needs to

lure us into making some cruel mistakes. We impulsive-

ly say things and flippantly do things that reveal our

unredeemed and unhealed self. It is a self we stumble

over and try to tame but can’t quite seem to master and

control. Help!

We spin our wheels, naively thinking that we will some-

how, perhaps through persistence, get ourselves un-

stuck. But, we don’t. We just get out of the car, feeling

very helpless, and ignorantly look at the mess we got

ourselves into. Did we ever think to ask someone for

help? Or, taken the advice of One who is wiser and

avoid this route altogether? “Come after me,” are words

that Jesus says to all of us. In order to heed his invita-

tion, we must leave our ego-self behind and follow.

When we really see and understand the freedom, peace,

justice, and love he offers, we find ourselves with such

sorrow in our hearts for how foolish and silly we have

been. All the misguided choices and sinful actions come

full view and we see how risky our random impassioned

behaviors really have been. Repentance is beautiful.

When done with a sin-

cere and contrite heart,

it directs us to the glory

that can be ours, ignites

us with the challenge of

living a life in service of

others and reminds us

that all is well. ©LPi

WHY DO WE DO THAT?

CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Do Catholics always need to receive commun-

ion in wafer form, or can it be different kinds of

bread? In the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, the

most common form for the eucharistic bread is the

small white communion “wafer” that is a ubiquitous

part of the Catholic Mass. The instructions of the Church

have been very specific regarding the make-up of the

bread used in the Mass: “The bread used in the celebra-

tion of the Most Holy Eucharistic Sacrifice must be un-

leavened, purely of wheat, and recently made … it fol-

lows therefore that bread made from another sub-

stance, even if it is grain, or if it is mixed with another

substance different from wheat to such an extent that it

would not commonly be considered wheat bread, does

not constitute valid matter for confecting the Sacrifice

and the Eucharistic Sacrament” (see Redemptionis Sac-

ramentum by the Congregation for Divine Worship and

the Discipline of the Sacraments, no. 48).

The Church’s tradition of using a wheat-based bread is

based on the bread that Jesus would have used at the

Last Supper and is considered to be an essential part of

the “matter” of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

As we consider the question of whether a “wafer” —

which is properly called a “host” — should be used, we

also must keep in mind that in the Eastern Rites of the

Catholic Church, leavened (i.e. “raised”) bread is more

often used. And so, while the thin, white “wafer” is most

commonly used in the Roman Rite of the Church, the

full expression of the Catholic tradition does allow for a

more substantial form of bread to be used, but the tra-

dition of using a simple wheat bread with no other ad-

ditions or additives is considered essential. ©Lpi
