Firmly Rooted in God’s
St John Evangelical Lutheran Church Mission Statement
St. John is a Christian family of disciples alive in a Scripture-based, Spirit-led mission of ministry, worship and play. Disciples at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church are expected to pray
often, worship regularly, learn from the Scriptures, participate in the serving groups if physically able, offer their time and talent as
the spirit calls them, and regularly contribute monetarily to support the mission and ministry of the church.

“Jesus said to them, ‘Come away…and rest awhile.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” (Mark 6:31) In the gospel of Mark, Jesus’ disciples had been out doing mission (6:7-13). Je-sus suggested that they get away from the crowds for a while. Jesus knows our lives are designed for balance. Since the beginning, the rhythm of human creation has been about work and rest. Even the heart beats and rests. Rest is built right into the creation story. We are told that God takes a day to rest, and God tells his people to take a day of rest. Rest, God declares, is crucial. It’s not wasted time or sinful. In our race with time, we’ve become a sleep-deprived society, causing stress in our human rela-tionships. Rest allows the Spirit to refresh us and to breathe into us new life for love and service. The solution to “not enough time,” is not to try and “save” time by working harder and running faster and doing even more, but to rest in the one who has already saved us and placed us in a new relationship with the eternal God. In the Ten Commandments we read, “Remember the Sabbath Day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:8-10) This is the kind of rest we really need – to rest in our relationship with God. God knows we need that kind of rest. Most Christians have historically observed the Sabbath on Sunday, in honor of the day of Jesus’ resurrection. Martin Luther, that 16th century reformer of the church, was once asked by his barber on how to observe the Ten Commandments. In responding the command-ment, “Remember the Sabbath Day, and keep it holy,” Luther replied: “I give thanks for the great and lovely goodness and grace of God for having given to us and commanding us, especially on the Sabbath, to consider his word and his mes-sage, on which treasure no human heart can ever meditate enough, for his word is the one solitary light in the darkness of this life.” We come to worship here at St. John to get fed, to get strengthened, to get re-newed and refreshed by God’s spirit moving in and among us. That happens when his Word is preached, when our praise and prayers are lifted up to our Lord, when his real presence in the bread and wine is shared in the sacrament of communion, and when we become living sacraments of his grace and love to one another. May the Spirit of Jesus direct our steps. Peace, Pastor John

Notes from the Quilters: The St. John Quilt-ers would like to thank the men of St. John for faith-fully having the Fel-lowship Hall ready
for us every Monday morning. We ap-preciate the many times you have set up the tables for us. Last year the quilters sent to Haiti 899 rolled bandages made out of white sheets. In doing so, we used up our supply of sheets and we are asking your help in getting more used white sheets for this purpose. Thank you to members of St. John for supporting our mission through the years. We have been able to send out everything that we have because of the generous donations of fabric, sheets and monetary donations plus those of you who cut squares and sew tops for us. We appreciate your sup-port of our mission.
A prayer for Ash Wednesday Lord of the winds, I cry to thee, I that am dust, and blown about by every gust I fly to thee. Lord of the waters, unto thee I call. I that am weed upon the waters borne, and by the waters torn, tossed by the waters, at thy feet I fall. —Mary Coleridge (1861-1907)

Being Faithful, Hopeful, Loving People A few years ago, the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) released a study a few weeks ago on the shifting landscape of religious reali-ties in the United States.
What it found isn’t especially surprising: the majority of people in this country are religiously unaffiliated. Christian circles are filled with many hand-wringing articles, studies, and sermons about how to make your community more accessible and welcoming. Despite the attraction and truth of the gospel, people keep leaving the church. The implications for our culture and society can ap-pear bleak: how can we expect to uphold moral and ethical standards when most people in the U.S. don’t believe in Jesus? We cry out for solutions. We fixate on the challenges facing the church. But the prophet Ezekiel reminds us that we are God’s people: “I will give them one heart and put a new spirit within them…. Then they shall be my people and I shall be their God” (Ezekiel 11:19-20). Despite what we see in our churches and society, there is still a vital mission to which we are called, and St. John still has a vital role in God’s kingdom. Jesus had just 12 disciples. The early church was tiny, when compared to the population of the towns in which they were located. These realities did not negate the calling of God. The Apostle Paul re-minds us, “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29) Our job, our calling, as followers of our Lord Jesus, is to be faithful, hopeful, loving people in our journey through life. Let’s rejoice that we are together in mission. I pray this gives you hope and reassurance today.

A BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2019 Annual Report. The Annual Meeting was held Sunday, Jan. 26. Thank you to all who attended and participat-ed in the discussions. If you were unable to attend, please pick up your copy of the annual report available in the narthex or Trinity Hall. A Prayer for our Church Council: Almighty God, you equip the church with a rich variety of gifts. Grant that we may use them to bear witness to Christ in lives that are built on faith and love. Make us ready to live the gospel and eager to do your will, so that we may share with all your church in the joys of eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
