Our Suffering Savior!
I mentioned last month how fast the years go by. I think it is safe to
say that everyone is wondering where January went. While our lives are busy and time seems to fly by, we are constantly reminded of what our Lord has done, is doing and will continue to do in our lives. It is
also hard to believe that we are just a few weeks away from Lent.
Lent is a time for us to focus on what our Savior has done for us and
how that is a reality in our lives today. It is a time of personal reflec-tion as well as a time that we can come together as a church body and
focus on Christ's work for us as a body of believers. The theme of our series this Lenten Season will be Our Suffering Savior. The scripture readings for the midweek services will be a harmonization of the passion of Jesus from the four Gospels. The messages each
week will focus of Jesus' last words from the cross commonly referred to as "the last sev-
en words".
I am personally very excited about this Lenten Season. We will be having joint Lenten services with St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aleman. We will start out with our Ash Wednesday meal and service on February 18th at St. John, Hamilton. The next Wednes-
day, February 25th, the meal and service will be held at St. Paul's, Aleman. We will alter-nate from St. John to St. Paul's for the six Wednesday evening services. Each church
will have their own Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services.
This is an exciting time to come together as believers in Jesus Christ as we all share
in the suffering of our Savior and look forward to His return. I am highly encouraging all of us to participate in these joint services. It is an incredible opportunity for us to share this time together and experience Christ's love for us as we share His love with one an-
other.
May we continue to be used by God with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

News
Happy New Year! We began this chilly new year talking about lots of interesting winter animals! The chil-dren have loved learning all about penguins and bears and how God made them special to survive the cold winter weather. The children also compared themselves to the size of a different types of penguins. We have used our listening skills, writing skills, and creative skills all while learning fun facts about God’s winter creatures.
The children have also had fun in our hot chocolate center making pretend hot chocolate for each other. They have also been using their fine motor skills while adding the marshmallows (puff balls) to the hot chocolate with pinchers and taking the orders with a pencil and paper. The children pretended to write checks, use play money and the cash registers also in this center.
Other fun centers this month have been the snowflake stamping and snowflake making out of coffee filters, stencils, necklace making, astronauts, and the noodle table. Of course the children always love reading books about winter animals, coloring pictures, playing with play dough and dressing up.
We are so thankful for this new year together at St. John!
In Him,
Shelley Hale
A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
254-386-3332 [email protected]
We have been learning all about the letters O, P, Q, and R this month. We have also been working on sequencing and put-ting pictures in order or what might happen first, second and last. The children have been working so hard and really been thinking! The children have been working on holding pencils cor-rectly and working on writing their names and letters. We are so proud of their progress.
PRESCHOOL ACTIVITIES The Kindergarteners are learning more and more each week. Their sight word list is continuing to grow. They have also been studying about winter. They made an ice snowman from filling balloons with water then shav-ing the balloon off and having the ice balls left. They also did a unit on mittens and gloves and read two books on mittens and compared and contrasted them and then brought mittens and gloves from home and graphed data with information they gathered. They are a hard working group of kids!
KINDERGARTEN ACTIVITIES
Our afternoon Zoo
Crew program continues to learn and have fun each afternoon . Please let us know at least one day ahead of time if you would like your child to be dropped in. This month they made pandas for “P” with shaving cream and talked about peace and made a dove!

BIBLE TIME/CHAPEL
Thank you to everyone who has brought snacks this month. Also, thanks for the birthday treats this month. We also enjoy special treats!
This month in our Bible time we have studied about Jesus going to the chapel as a young boy and getting lost from his parents. They learned that Jesus was lost in “His Father’s House.” We have also talked about Jesus’ baptism and Jesus calling his disciples. The children have minds that absorb so much information. They love hearing the stories retold by Pastor each week in chapel.
THANK YOU’S

Dear Friends at St. John Lutheran Church
My heart is so full as a mother. As your Pastor Keith I am sure has told you that life at the Seminary is not always easy. It is the love and support by
churches like yours that really makes the difference in our lives. Please know how blessed we were this Christmas. Honestly, the children have never had such an awe-some gifts. Even Kasa our service dog had a great time. Deer antlers cut up are $20 for a small piece. Because it was warm Christmas Day Here in St. Louis 47 degrees the children played all afternoon outside with the nerf guns. Zoe was really touched by her gifts as well. She is so sentimental and the were perfect. As I write this my heart is still full from watching them open the many gifts. Thank you again for you generosity. May God Bless you and keep you.
The Tobin Scott Family
May you feel the wonder of Christmas, all hopeful and bright in you heart.

Blessed Assurance Fanny J. Crosby
1873
Nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have
believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I
have committed to Him until that Day. 2 Timothy 1:12
Frances Ridley Havergal and Frances (Fanny) Crosby
never met, but they became dear pen pals – the two most
famous women hymnists of their age, the former in Eng-
land and the latter in America. Havergal once wrote a
poem about her American counterpart:
Sweet, blind singer over the sea, / Tuneful and jubilant!
How can it be,
That the songs of gladness, which float so far; / As if they
fell from the evening star. Are the notes of one who may
never see / ‘Visible music’
Of flower and tree . . . . . Oh, her heart can see, her heart
can see!
And its sight is strong and swift and free. . . . .
Another of Fanny’s dearest friend was Phoebe Knapp.
While Fanny lived in the Manhattan slums and worked in
rescue missions, Phoebe lived in the Knapp Mansion, a
palatial residence in Brooklyn, where she entertained lav-
ishly. She was an extravagant dresser with a wardrobe full
of elaborate gowns and diamond tiaras. Her music room
contained one of the finest collections of instruments in
the country, and Fanny was a frequent houseguest.
One day in 1873, while Fanny was staying at the Knapp
Mansion, Phoebe said she had a tune she wanted to play.
Going to the music room, she sat at the organ and played
a new composition of her own while the blind hymnist
listened. Play it for me Crosby requested. Knapp did
then asked, “What does this tune say?” She turned to
see Crosby kneeling in prayer. Knapp played it a second
time and then a third. Finally the blind woman respond-
ed, “That says, ‘Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what
a foretaste of glory divine!’ “ She quickly composed the
words, and a great hymn was born.
Many years later D. L. Moody was preaching in New
York at the 23rd Street Dutch Reformed Church. The
Moody/Sankey meetings had popularized Fanny Cros-
by’s hymns around the world and had made the blinnd
poetess a household name. But whenever she attended a
Moody/Sankey meeting, she refused to be recognized,
disavowing acclaim.
This day the church was so crowded she could find no-
where to sit. Moody’s son, Will, seeing her, offered to
find her a seat. To her bewilderment, he led her onto the
platform just as the crowd was singing “Blessed Assur-
ance,” Moody Sr. jumped to his feet, raised his hand,
and interrupted the singing. “Praise the Lord!” he
shouted. “Here comes the authoress!”
Fanny took her seat amid thunderous ovation, humbly
thanking God for making her a blessing to so many.
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit,
Washed in his blood!
Perfect submission, perfect delight! Visions of rapture now burst at
my sight! Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
Perfect submission, all is at rest. I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
This is my story, this is my song. Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song. Praising my Savior all the day long.
