THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Prayer and Liturgy

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 55:10-11; Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that if we understand His word with our heart, it will bear abundant fruit. St. Francis de Sales expands on this thought: God’s Word is so powerful and efficacious that it gives life to those in need. What a good sign it is for a Christian to take pleasure in listening to God’s Word, and to belong totally to God! Those who come to abandon all to God without any reserve are like the sunflower that is not content with turning its flowers, leaves and stem toward the sun, but by some hidden wonder, it also turns its underground root. To love God completely means we love God who commands, and we love the thing commanded. Jesus, who died for love of us, wants us to listen to His word so as to make it our own. After we have listened attentively to the Word of God, let us open our hearts and be receptive to understanding what we hear. Understanding well God’s Word helps us to keep it. Our actions ought to be congruent with our words. That is, the carrying out of our good resolutions ought to immediately follow our words. Let us implore the Divine mercy to strengthen us to make effective what our heart desires and approves. Our Lord makes it very clear that His Word is effective in us when we embrace His will for us. This does not mean that we feel “good” or “holy” in doing God’s will. What matters is that we hold in reverence God’s Word and keep to the intention of profiting from it. Divine Goodness is satisfied with this. God is content with little, and focuses on the intentions in our heart, not our feelings. However, those, who listen to the Word of God with a particular attention and desire for it, speak of the victories over themselves and their weaknesses. Our entire good consists in accepting the truth of Our Savior’s word. Let us persevere in living that truth so we may have life in abundance. (Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales)

WE WELCOME those who have recently

entered into our faith through the waters of Baptism: Valentina BuVillars, daughter of Javier and Alicia; Michael Thomas Kordes, son of John and Erica; Amara Elise Wagner, daughter of Brian and Natascha.

DEAR PARISHIONERS: My letter this week serves to let you know about a few liturgical schedule changes you will see, with the first beginning this fall. Parishioner input

was considered in both of these decisions. FAMILY MASS This year, in response to the needs expressed in the CARA study, we initiated a Family Mass specifically geared to the children of the parish. We have been pleased with the response and intend to continue celebrating this Mass in the future. There will be several changes. First, we will resume the Family Mass on the first weekend in October and continue through the first weekend in May. This decision was made because there is so much going on in school childrens’ lives at the beginning of September, and attendance at this year’s June Mass was not overwhelming. Secondly, at the suggestion of some parents, we are rescheduling this Mass to Sunday at 11:30am in the de Sales Chapel. Some parents feel that 5:00pm is not an ideal time for young children because they are tired and hungry, and suggested the Sunday at 11:30am time would be more conducive for the children. All of this continues to be experimental until we determine the time that works best for all involved. I am so grateful to all who came forward in so many ways to train the young people in the various liturgical ministries. It was a delight to see them proudly fulfilling these various roles. Thank you to Heather Smith and her choir of angelic voices for adding to this liturgy. The children who ministered could not have done it without the cooperation of the parents, as well as those who did the training. What a good job on the part of all who are involved; I hope to see all of you and perhaps others involved when we resume in the fall. WEDDING SCHEDULE In light of our experience with weddings at St. John Neumann, we have decided to limit our Saturday weddings to two time slots, one at Noon and the other at 2:30pm. Even during the height of our wedding season, we rarely have more than two weddings on a specific date. Because of previously scheduled weddings, this new time schedule will not take effect until July 1

st,

2015. All currently scheduled wedding arrangements (all prior to this date) will be honored. Weddings not yet scheduled may be arranged on any current time slots that are available prior to this July 2015 date. This will then provide us the opportunity to have a morning funeral, if necessary. Many people seem to prefer to delay funerals until Saturday to allow more people the opportunity to attend. It also gives us a longer time span between the last wedding of the day and setting up for the Saturday evening Vigil Mass.

I look forward to sharing news of my Ecuador trip with you!

God Bless,

Father Tom

FAMILY MASS CHILDREN’S OFFERTORY “CHECKS”

Last September, at our initial planning meeting for the introduction of the monthly Family Mass, we discussed various ways the children could actively participate. In addition to children ministering as lectors, altar servers, ushers and greeters, a suggestion was made to include all of the children by implementing a “children’s offertory” of some sort. Someone came up with the idea of preparing pre-printed checks similar to ones the children are used to seeing their parents write, giving each child the opportunity to offer time or talent to God during the coming week. The sample was submitted in April. We thought you might enjoy seeing what some of the offerings have been, with all typos included! From ages four to nine - not watching TV; helping my parents cook; cleaning the floor after dinner; not doing any complans which makes my family upset; not playing before doing my homework; not doing liying and fiting which makes my momy and dady mad and upset; not doing crafts on the wood table which makes my pearants upset; not doing punshing; I will say a prayer tonight; I will give a dollar to charity if I find a charity box; not hitting my sister which makes my sister upset; helping my parents to fix the garage door; not arguing; help doing the dishes; help fold clothes; not doing woat I am not sooposted to which makes my parents upset; not playing and jumping on the functure; babysit my sisters; not begging; not falling on Luke which makes my brother upset; lovieng people; helping my parents to be redy wehe my mother is not; brosh my teeth, not scream; and from a grandmother - spend more time with my grandchildren.

It will be interesting to see what new offerings crop up when we resume Family Mass in October. Stay tuned!

PLEASE PRAY for those who have asked for our

prayers: Maxine Black; James V. Cook; Sr. Marie de Chantal; Charlene Little; Dan McNichol; and Aloysius Mitchell; for all who are sick; and for all caregivers who minister to the sick.

When you call to add a name to our prayer list, please leave your name and number as a contact and let us know what the illness is. Before calling, please be sure you have spoken to the person or a member of the family about adding their name—we do not want to inadvertently disregard someone's desire for privacy.

Names of those who are sick or injured will be kept on the list for three weeks unless you specifically request a shorter period of time or call to ask that the name be removed. Boldface type is used for names that are new to the list this week.

THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

WE PRAY for those who have died, especially

Bob Atkinson, uncle of Pat Gilbertson; and Alice Harris, grandmother of Gwen Dillon.

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next

weekend we celebrate The Sixteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word:

Wisdom 12:13, 16-19 The attitude of God throughout the history of Israel, and particularly his moderation toward his sinful people, reveals that he is impartial and patient toward the most rebellious. God offers his mercy to all sinners for he wants all his children to find the same hope for themselves and their fellow citizens. Psalm 86: Lord, You are Good and Forgiving This is a prayer expressing confidence and requesting help. Romans 8:26-27 Prayer does not demand smooth words or broad vocabulary. It does require trust in the Spirit who raises our hearts to God. Matthew 13:24-43 The parables of the mustard seed and the leaven underline the contrast between the humble beginnings of the kingdom and the great coming which is promised. The parable of the weeds is a lesson in patience for those who are astounded by the slowness of divine justice.

PRAYER LIFE GROWTH OPPORTUNITY

“Give Us This Day” is a monthly publication from Liturgical Press created to help sustain your personal prayer practices with daily prayer for Morning and Evening, prayers and readings for Mass each day, along with a reflection on the Scriptures and a daily profile of a saintly witness. Many St. John Neumann parishioners find the daily “Blessed Among Us” and Reflection articles particularly informative. “Give Us This Day” is also published in a large print edition. Liturgical Press has announced a Bread For Your Parish (pun-intended) credit-earning program, where for every subscription established by a parishioner, St. John Neumann will earn $5.00 in credit toward purchases from Liturgical Press! To earn that credit for our parish, please use the promotion code TDBR5228 when you subscribe online at www.giveusthisday.org or call toll-free 888-259-8470. Our parish code will expire on January 31, 2015. Liturgical Press is providing us at no charge with a limited number of the August 2014 edition that we will make available mid-to-late July. We will announce availability in a later bulletin.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR KIDS Each December at St. John Neumann, for many years, in addition to the annual Christmas Angels program, we have had a wonderful tradition of also collecting gifts for children of Cornerstones clients. This tradition will continue, with two new volunteers, Colleen Conlin and her daughter, Morgan Davis, leading this effort. However, we are in need of a large work space in which we can store these gifts while they are being inventoried, sorted and bagged according to family for distribution. We will need access to this area on and off for about three weeks. Up until the last day or two of the program, we will only need access to quickly drop off donated gifts. We hope that one of you who lives fairly close has basement space you would be willing to share. It would be very advantageous if your basement is a “walk-out”, but that is not a requirement. Please help us so that we can make Christmas a special day for many local children who otherwise may not receive a gift. For more information contact Sue Colyer at 703-860-6149 or by email at [email protected].

You can easily find a Catholic church near your vacation spot at a site such as Masstimes.com. And remember the Oblates staff churches in Cape May, New Jersey and at three sites in North Carolina - Buxton, Kitty Hawk and Wilmington.

THIS WEEKEND This fund supports pastoral projects

nourishing the growth of the Church in Africa. These projects include teaching catechism classes, building new churches, and offering retreats to weary church personnel in conflict areas. This collection is a way for us to express solidarity with our African brothers and sisters and to work for their spiritual and material development. Please be generous to this collection.

DIOCESAN KINGS DOMINION DAY

Rising 9th Graders to recently-graduated seniors are invited to join high school teens from across the Arlington Diocese for an exciting Diocesan Kings Dominion Day Friday, August 1st. Bus costs are prohibitive so we can only make this trip happen if parents with 6- or 7-passenger vans (or larger) volunteer to drive to and

from the park and join in the fun! Parents, here’s an offer you can’t refuse! You will receive reimbursement for gas and parking, and a free Kings Dominion ticket for you and one accompanying teen child if you agree to transport a van full of teens to and from Kings Dominion!

We will leave our parking lot at 10:00am and return at 10:00pm, allowing a full eight hours of fun and frolic. Share the fun with all your friends – they don’t have to be members of St. John Neumann or Catholic. Tickets are $34; scholarships are available as needed. (Contact Doug Johnson for further information.) This special pricing is available only for Diocesan Kings Dominion Day. A permission slip is required, and can be picked up at the Faith Formation Office or, on request, we will email it to you. Space is limited and based on available volunteer vans and drivers – so sign up now! The list of attendees is maintained on a first-come, first-served basis and available vans will be filled according to place on the list. We will take as many teens as we have vans available to accommodate them.

The deadline to sign up is Friday, July 25th. Submit your check for $34 (per person) made out to St. John Neumann and a fully-completed, signed permission slip by that date. Please email Doug Johnson at [email protected] to reserve space for you and any friends, volunteer parents to drive your van that seats seven (including driver), or with questions or concerns. This is always a really great event, so register yourself and your friends early so you don’t miss out on all the fun we are going to have!
