As some of you may already be aware, Cardinal Tobin and the Archdiocesan administration has published a plan for gradual church reopening, and allowed for phase 1 to begin last Sunday, May 17th, at the discre-tion of the local pastor and leadership team. Phase 1 allowed for the reopening of churches for private prayer on an extremely limited basis, which we have done (see below). Phase 1 also gradually introduces access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, again in a way that is at the same time safe for both priest and penitent and provides sufficient privacy safeguards. We hope to have an announcement soon about how we might do this here at St. John’s!

Page 2 The Ascension of the Lord May 24, 2020

Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Today we observe the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord. In the Northeast, this feast is generally observed on the Thursday before today, although the rest of the country had previously transferred it to what would otherwise be the Seventh Sunday of Easter, so that more people would be able to celebrate it. The Bishops of New Jersey have also transferred it, at least for this year, as many parishes are only able to stream Mass on Sundays. By the way, Cardinal Tobin continues to dispense all the faithful from the obligation of Sunday and holyday Mass, and has also dispensed the Easter Duty requirement of confession (if needed) and communion for this year.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, in which we commemorate the many people who lost their lives serving in our country’s armed forces in all the wars since its founding. Our 9am streamed Mass will celebrate this observance, with prayer and song. [We will also stream our 10am Spanish Mass as usual observing the saint(s) of the day.] Fr. Jonathan will offer the opening and closing prayers at Bergenfield’s service at the monuments outside borough hall starting at 11:30am.

Next Sunday is Pentecost. Let’s all pray this week that the Holy Spirit may especially give us a full measure of the gift of fortitude as we continue to confront the Covid-19 pandemic.

Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings.

We can get caught up in the details and miss the heart of the message today. Where did Jesus go? Is heaven “up there”? Why doesn’t Matthew’s Gospel have Jesus being taken up? Doesn’t this feast remove Jesus from us, to some place where he “sits at the right hand of the Father”? Sound a little disengaged?

In his introduction to the writings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Jean Leclercq writes that the mystery of the Ascension fulfilled the mystery of love in which Jesus returns to the glory of the Father. The Son then sends the Spirit to unite us with the Father in love. Thus, in Bernard’s thought, the Ascension is a symbol for the passage of Christ from his life in mortal flesh to glorious life in the Spirit. This same transition from flesh to Spirit can also be accomplished in us, since it has already taken place in Christ.

But we are not simply passive recipients. There is work to be done. Luke’s angels bluntly tell the apostles to get moving. Matthew’s final scene spells out the work: “Go forth and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching others to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19). Witness to Jesus, in word and deed.

The task of spreading the good news that is Jesus Christ, teaching others about him, can seem daunting. But we are not alone. We have the promise that the Holy Spirit will work with us; in Matthew, Jesus’ final words are reassuring: “I am with you always” (28:20). That is reason enough to work with confidence.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“I am praying for them…” JOHN 17: 9

Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foundation of Stewardship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you.
