2nd Collection ~ This Weekend, November 17th-18th Black & Indian Collection/Catholic Relief Services

Includes:Campaign for Human Development American Bishops’ Overseas Appeal In 2009, 43.6 million Americans lived at or below the poverty line, the highest in the 51 years for which data is available. With many families living one paycheck away from financial instability, there is little hope that more Americans won’t face poverty in the years to come. This collection funds programs in communities across the United States where people living in poverty join together to identify problems, make decisions and find ways to improve their lives. Please visit www.org/nationalcollections to read more details about CCHD’s efforts to bring good news to the poor by helping to break the cycle of poverty. Thank you for your generous support. Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Archbishop Myers has authorized a voluntary special emergency collection to assist in local relief efforts in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy and the Nor’easter. This second collection will be taken in our parish next weekend, November 24-25. The Archdiocese will distribute all donations equally at the recommendation of the four Regional Bishops of the Archdiocese to help fund parish-based initiatives in their own counties to aid people affected by the storm, in areas such as food pantries, warming/charging centers, local shelters and clothing distributions. We are still seeking clarification as to whether individuals may also apply through the parish; if so, the appropriate format will be announced shortly.

+++

The insert in today’s bulletin summarizes our parish’s financial picture for the last two fiscal years. As you can see, we are relatively stable, trying our best to control expenses while providing you with as much service as possible. Clearly, we can use the help of more parishioners in the Sunday collection. Please consider your giving after reviewing the report.

+++

Our Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be held tonight, November 18th, at 7pm in the Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd on New Bridge Road and S. Prospect Ave. Some of our choir members will offer an anthem; one of our parishioners will join some congregrants from other churches in expressing their thanks. A free will offering will be taken to benefit our Parish Food Pantry. Please come if you can. Refreshments will follow the Service.

+++

Our parish Concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving will be offered on Thursday, November 22nd, at 9a.m. Bread will be blessed for sharing at your Thanksgiving table. It will be the only Mass for the day, and all parish, religious education, and academy offices will be closed. Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel The end of the church year directs our attention to what Scripture says about the end of time. Two of the words used to describe these texts are not part of our ordinary vocabulary: “apocalyptic,” which refers to receiving a “revelation” in a vision of something concealed up until now, and “eschatalogical,” which points to events of the end time or final age (the eschaton) when the evil powers make their final struggle with God and are defeated. These readings have one important point to make: that all will be well. God is in charge, even when it seems that everything is coming to a catastrophic end. As we hear in the first reading today, God has designated the angelic guardian Michael to watch over the people. Such a time will prove that how one lives life has consequences. The Book of Daniel offers a word of consolation to the wise and those leaders who championed God’s justice. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of the coming of the Son of Man in great power and glory. While Jesus indicated in Mark’s Gospel that this would happen soon, such was not the case. We continue to wait on the Lord. When we pray the Our Father we always say, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” Someone asked recently why we pray that God not lead us into temptation, finding it strange to think of God doing such a thing. What we pray for is that God not let us fail in the final testing that everyone has to undergo.

“Loving God, you created all that is in the heavens and on the earth; we know our future is in your hands. Help us to entrust ourselves to your mercy and care. Do not allow temptation to overwhelm us, but send your Spirit to lead us into your kingdom, where your Son reigns forever and ever. Amen.”

It is through actions such as these that Our Faculty lead by example keeping faith with their mission:

To Teach as Christ Taught

‘The exercise of charity is one of the Church’s essential activities: love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to her mission as the ministry of the sacraments and the preaching of the Gospel” …..Excerpt from Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical Letter: “Deus Caritas Est.” Transfiguration Academy, Strengthening Faith, Enlightening Minds, Transforming Hearts
