St. John the Baptist Catholic Church: Loving Patron
Take flight with me in a northeasterly direction and after traveling 4,650 miles you will arrive at my home in Ireland, Cashel County Tipperary. Now let us step back in time to the year 450 AD. As we look around the green plains circled by blue mountains, we find a teacher at work, St. Patrick, lovingly instructing the king and the people in the ways of Christianity. The seed of the gospel takes root, and as we fast forward over the centuries, we find monasteries, churches, a host of holy places dotting the green plains around my hometown. Soon Cistercian, Franciscans and Dominicans are founding places of learning and of worship. My ancestors undergo many challenges as a variety of invasions seek to change the ambience of my homeland. Then, in 1785, on the sight of an old Franciscan monastery, the Church of St. John the Baptist appears. This holy place, to this day, is where the people of my hometown come together for worship and prayer. You can imagine the joy and happiness I felt when Father David dedicated our new Catholic community to the care and patronage of St. John the Baptist. A rich flow of memories united me across the years to the place of my birth and to the community of faith, which has nurtured my ancestors and my family. Close to my home church is a cemetery where all my ancestors are buried, including my parents, Jimmy and Rita, and my sisters Helen and Mary. All ten children in my family were baptized in the Church of St. John the Baptist. As my family members entered the heavenly kingdom as the Mass of resurrection was celebrated in our church, no wonder I felt so overwhelmed with joy and thanksgiving as we dedicated our church and community to the care of St. John the Baptist. I wonder what our new church and community will look like 200 years from now. I am sure it will be a vibrant expression of the communion of saints, just as my faith community in Cashel has been for my ancestors, my family and myself. Fr. Jimmy O’Connor of St. Patrick’s Church shares the same faith-history as I do. We were born in Cashel and, on the same street, within two doors of each other, we lovingly celebrate the patronage of the community of St. John the Baptist as the cradle of our faith. With joy and thanksgiving, I dedicate this brief bulletin note as we salute the newest church in honor of St. John the Baptist, and ask the blessings of the community in Cashel on our new pilgrim journey.
