SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION

“The First Reading of today’s Mass shows us how God chooses His instruments of salvation wherever He pleases. To bring His People out of exile the Lord takes hold of Cyrus, a pagan king. The Lord uses political authority to do good. There is nothing in the universe that lies outside His paternal dominion. “In the Gospel for today Jesus reaffirms the duty of all of us to obey civil authority. The Pharisees and the Herodians had attempted to lay a trap with their question: Was it licit to pay tribute to Caesar? There were those among the Jews who argued that such payments simply reinforced the tyranny of foreign domination over the Chosen People. If the Master were to acquiesce in this payment, the Pharisees would be able to accuse Him of collaboration with the Romans. He would thus be discredited before a good part of the people. But if He were to oppose the tax, the Herodians, who were in league with the (occupying) civil power, would then have g rounds for a denunciation to the Romans. “Jesus gives His enemies a profound response, which went far beyond their twisted expectations. He does not limit Himself to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The Master speaks: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, He says, “and to God the things that are God’s.” Give to Caesar what rightfully belongs to him: tribute, obedience to just laws…but nothing more. The State does not enjoy absolute power and dominion. As ordinary citizens, Christians have “the obligation of rendering to the state whatever material and personal services are required for the common good. (GS, 75) For their part, civil authorities are obligated to act with equity and justice in the distribution of their goods and services. They have to serve the common good without looking for any personal gain. They have to legislate and govern with the greatest respect for the natural law and the

rights of the people. This includes the protection of life from the moment of conception, defense, of the family, religious liberty, the rights of parents regarding the education of their children. The Lord speaks through the Prophet Isaiah: “Woe t o t h o s e who d e c r e e i n i qu i t ou s decrees!” (IS 10:1) (The words in italics are from “In Conversation With God” by Fr. Fernandez) Of course, to render unto Caesar (the state) what is due in justice is to live our Catholic Faith to its fullest by participating in the political process of building a just society, a culture of life. If we render unto Caesar what is God’s, we do the state no good and in fact do it harm. We can be proud as Catholics of our good moral reasoning which protects the rights of all people in all conditions. Catholic morality is a reasoned morality based on natural law which must always be followed. Let us thank God for the moral reasoning we have been taught and which is at our disposal. When the history of our t ime is written, the faithful Catholics of our time will be referenced as the heroes who stood firm and did not give in to the “culture of death.” They did not cooperate in the intrinsic evils of: abortion, euthanasia, destruction of human embryos (babies), etc. They rendered unto Caesar the truth of the reverence for life. St. Thomas More gives us great example in the proper relation of Church and State. He said that when a citizen denies his own conscience to “go along” with the state in something which is objectively wrong, he leads his country to ruin. Catholics who form their consciences correctly are

able to be good citizens and will form a culture of life which will ensure the protection of all people in the future. It is not only about us and our times. You will find Archbishop Chaput’s book: "Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life" (Doubleday, August 2008) helpful . In the book, Archbishop Chaput urges Catholics to live their faith more honestly and vigorously in public life. Arguing that the Catholic faith is "always personal but never private," Archbishop Chaput asserts that the most powerful 'political' act a Catholic can make is to live their faith - not just in word but in all of their choices, decisions and actions, both in public and private life.“ “The time for easy Christianity is over," writes Archbishop Chaput. "We need to be more zealous in our faith, not more discreet, clearer in our convictions, not muddier, and more Catholic, not less." May God bless you and may our Lady keep you in her care. With my prayers, Fr. Arnsparger

GATHERING A CHOIR OF ANGELS ——————————

As Christmas approaches, we yearn to hear the voices of children singing praises to God. This year, we will assemble a “choir of angels” for the 6:30pm Christmas Eve Mass. They will learn traditional Catholic Christmas hymns and the Missa de Angelis. They will be part of the Advent program - Lessons and Carols: The O Antiphons, to be performed on Gaudete Sunday.

So, if your child is between the ages of 6 and 14 and would like to sing with us, please call Diane Nelson, Sacred Music Administrator, at 828-899-7329.

Our rehearsals have begun. We meet in the Church. It is not too late to join!

Please talk with your child and pray about this important ministry. It is only through our children that our rich treasury of traditional and sacred Catholic music will live. May your blessings be abundant, and we hope to hear from you soon.

God’s Peace, Diane Nelson

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILES PRAYER

God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our

families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of

communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! World Meeting of Families — Philadelphia 2015

Dear FF Parents, We invite you to spend time in quiet adoration before Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament while your children are in Faith Formation classes. Our classes meet on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm and conclude with Adoration and Benediction in the church at 7:00pm. We invite you, our parents to join us and your children at that time. “What will keep you away from the gift of our Lord who awaits you to spend a little time adoring him in the Eucharist?  Please look into your hearts and pray about this and try to make some time to come to adore Jesus in the Eucharist.” St. Jean-Marie-Baptist Vianney (The cure' of Ars) a 19th century French priest who once noticed a peasant come in to the church and stay for hours in front of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The Saint asked this man what do you say during all that time before Jesus in the Eucharist? The Peasant replied, "Nothing, I look at Him and He looks at me."  How awesome this gift in which Jesus our Lord and God is present here in the Eucharist. We invite you to spend a few minutes, half an hour or even an hour in quiet prayer and adoration. Praised be Jesus Christ!
