Jesus cooks breakfast: A service of worship

for all ages and all stages of faith

The 5th Sunday after Trinity

Sunday 12th July

2020

Introduction and Welcome Di Manthorpe, LLM at St John’s, introduces our online monthly SPARK (family) service.

Hymn Colours of day dawn into the mind

Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street, and let's give the message to the people we meet. So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow, tell the people of Jesus, let His love show.

Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend.

Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come, the Son came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, His Spirit is near.

Words and music: Sue McClennan (b1951), John Paculabo (b1946) and Keith Ryecroft (b1949); arr Adrian Fish (b1956)

Community Prayer of Welcome

Dear God, we welcome you amongst us today. Open our ears so that we may hear Your voice. Open our minds so that we may receive Your wisdom. Lift our spirits so that we may feel Your guidance. Open our hearts so that we may receive Your wonderful love, and lift our voices to sing Your praises now and always. Amen.

Page 2: St John the Baptist Hymn West Byfleet · The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend. Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come,

We say sorry to God

Father God, please forgive us for the things we have done wrong, for bad temper and angry words, for being hasty intolerant, and wanting the best for ourselves, for making other people unhappy, for letting you down. Forgive us heavenly Father. Amen.

Collect (Prayer for today)

Lord Jesus, you know each of us by name, and have called us to follow you. Teach us how to respond in every opportunity this day will bring. We ask you this, you who love us with the Father and the Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Dramatised Reading, followed by a reflection for today

Based upon John 21.1-14

Hymn Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don't know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I'll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Words: John L. Bell (b1949) and Graham Maule (1958-2019) Tune: Kelvingrove; Scottish traditional melody, arr John L Bell

Prayers of Intercession during which the following responsive forms are used:

Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer

Merciful Father Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen.

Concluding with The Lord’s Prayer :

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Community Prayer

Trusting in you, Jesus, we join together as a community: a family of faith on a great journey, a journey to grow ever deeper in our faith. Along the way, remind us of your love for us,

Page 3: St John the Baptist Hymn West Byfleet · The light of the world is risen again; the people of darkness are needing a friend. Open your eyes, look into the sky, the darkness has come,

Your sacrifice for us, Your presence with us. Let us never lose hope along the way. Help us to be strong; strong in faith, strong in love, strong in peace. May we go out today and share your love, faith, and peace with all our community. Amen.

Hymn In Christ alone my hope is found

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand

There in the ground his body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave he rose again And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me Form life’s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck him from my hand ‘Til he returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Words & music: Stuart Townend (b1963) & Keith Getty (1974)

Blessing and Conclusion

May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold us in the palm of his hand. Amen. The closing music is Le Cygne (The Swan) from ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ by Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921); cellist Sophie Powell. (A short silence follows the end of the service before Soundcloud diverts you to another track, based on their algorithm. Since we have no control over what is chosen, we suggest you stop the recording during this silence if you’d like to continue with a period of quiet.) Coming up soon at St John’s…

We hope to re-open for services at St John’s from 19th July, and so this is likely to be the last of our ‘lockdown’ pre-recorded audio services. However, we currently intend to make a recording of our regular services available online for those unable to attend in person, and these will usually be available a day or two after each service takes place. The service next week (The Sixth Sunday after Trinity), will be conducted by the vicar, Revd Chris Hollingshurst. Please join us again for this service - either in person, or catch up afterwards online!

Contributing to the work of St John’s…

In common with many other churches and charities at this time, St John’s has lost significant sources of income, whilst many of our bills still have to be paid.

If you are able to donate to our Christian mission, this is now possible to do ‘online’ via our website homepage (click on ‘Give now’). For those receiving the service by CD, alternative means of donating include sending a cheque (made payable to West Byfleet PCC) to the Parish Office, St John’s Church, Camphill Road, West Byfleet, Surrey KT14 6EH.

Any donations received will be really welcome - thank you.

St John’s is now open for private prayer on Wednesday mornings from 10am – 12 noon, and this Sunday afternoon

(12th July) from 2-4pm.

From 15th July, St John’s plans to hold Morning Prayer on Wednesdays at 9am, with the church also open for private

prayer on Wednesday mornings from 10am – 12 noon.

As we continue to unwind from lockdown, church opening times may vary, so please do check our website at
