A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKWe all know the parable of the Good Samaritan.  We know it so well that we forget that it is pointed towards us.  The parable is about living the Way of Jesus, the Law of Love.  The Samaritan’s were seen by the Jews as outside of the Law.  They had intermarried with pagans and their practice of the Jewish faith was not as pure as the Jews.  And yet the Samaritan, in Jesus’ parable, warrants the title “Good” because he knew when God called him to action.  He knew that he could not be a follower of the Lord and walk by that man who needed his help.  This parable is real in our lives.  Recall the times when you were the recipient of kindness when you least expected it but needed it most.  It demanded someone’s time and resources to help; and we cannot forget the kindness.

The Law of the Lord is more than precepts that have to be memorized and followed; and indeed they should be.  We are called to fulfill God’s Law of helping those who need our love at any given moment.  We know that Jesus identified with those who were hurting and went to great lengths to relieve their pain or satisfy their need.  And more than THE LAW…relieving the sufferings of others seems to be innate, inborn.  Often we see it coming naturally from people whom we least expected.  The Parable of the Good Samaritan answers the question:  What must I do to inherit eternal life?  We have only to look into our hearts.  We know what we must do.    A grateful note is extended to everyone who could and did support the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal.  To date, we are a little short $9,542.40 in meeting our parish’s target of $179,000.  Thank you to the 560 gifts, thus far, that are helping us achieve our goal.  Please continue fulfilling these pledges.  If anyone has not done so, please consider making a contribution.  Every donation is appreciated and not only will help us make our goal but continue to do the charitable work it is making possible in the Diocese of Wilmington.  Thank you for your cooperation and dedication.  God reward your generosity.

Monday is the Feast of St. Bonaventure: Do you ever get stuck with the tough jobs? It's well known that the Franciscan Order was incredibly influential throughout history. But one of the most challenging times for a new movement is surviving the death of the founder. Bonaventure joined the Franciscan Order almost two decades after the passing of St. Francis. Initially, the young man's theological insights earned him a prime faculty position at the University of Paris. More than his academic skill, however, he was known for his deep devotion to Christ. He was elected the General Minister of the Franciscan Order, right in the thick of controversies. Some friars had conflicting views of how to interpret St. Francis' poverty as the order grew. Others started a new heresy, saying that the Franciscan Order began a new era of the Holy Spirit, replacing the era of Jesus and the authority of the Church. St. Bonaventure weathered these crises with grace, restructuring the order when necessary and offering a more organized perspective on the insights of St. Francis.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FORMATION

Our Vacation Bible School program traveled to Greece to learn Paul and his travels to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all the people. It was a wonderful and exciting adventure. They children sang with such joy and they made some awesome Grecian art. Our adventurers traveled as a house through the Marketplace, where they met Paul as he traveled through Greece. They also enjoyed delicious treats and participated in our Olympic games.

Our young travelers were accompanied by many friends who kept them sage through their travels.

Thank you to our merry band of travelers, our many helpers, and our music leader, Mrs. Papili. Thanks to all for making our VBS week one of much fun, excitement, and learning. Looking forward to another great trip next year,The Religious Education Office

Loving isn't too difficult, right? Many of us are surrounded by kind, lovely people trying to do the right thing. Indeed, to "love your neighbor as yourself" seems like it should be easy enough. Treat people like you would like to be treated. Bring the new neighbors some baked goods (normal and gluten-free, just in case). Chat with the bank teller about his holiday weekend. Write an occasional card to your sister "just because." There were probably varieties of these acts of kindness in Jesus' day. Perhaps substituting figs for cookies. But "exchange pleasantries with the traveling cloth merchant" isn't the example Jesus gives.

"A man fell victim to robbers... they stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead." The righteous pass by the scene of the dying man. The hero of the story is the one on the margins of Jewish society, who perhaps would not have been welcomed, in other circumstances, by the man now in the ditch. His neighborly love causes him to halt his journey, to tend wounds, and to pay for the man's care out of his own savings. Are we interruptible? Are we attentive to the hurts of others? Are we generous with our money and possessions?

In the past few weeks, who has crossed your mind as someone in need of help? Perhaps it's an acquaintance suffering from cancer. Maybe you were invited to donate or volunteer to a local social cause, but it just won't stick in your mind (or schedule) to make it happen. The needs of people are many and varied. We can't help everyone, but God does place opportunities in our path for compassion and courageous love. This week, be "the one who treated him with mercy."

GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), will begin at St. John the Beloved on Monday September 9th at 7:00 PM. What is RCIA? It is the process of instruction and preparation by which a person becomes a full member of the Catholic Church, through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Our Catholic faith is a treasure which takes a lifetime to fully appreciate. Yet for a variety of reasons many good people have turned away from the active practice of the faith in their daily lives. Some have bought into the secular message that the gospel is no longer relevant in a modern society. Or, others have lost a sense of God's presence in their lives.

KNOWING GOD IS EVERYTHING

In assisting past participants in the RCIA process we have seen firsthand how the deep longings of the human spirit cannot be satisfied only by what the world has to offer. Many of them recognized first and foremost a void in their lives that was not being filled. Other reasons they were drawn to RCIA include:

• A longing to become a part of a faith community • The desire for family members to be united in their faith and worship together • For parents of students in our school to become more familiar with the faith • For couples planning marriage to be able to share together in the Eucharist

Do you see yourself in any of these situations? Do you know someone who might benefit from RCIA; someone close to you, a friend, a spouse, a neighbor, or a fiancée? If your answer is yes, then you are invited to respond to this invitation. More information can be obtained simply by calling the parish office at 302-999-0211, or contact Deacon Tom Bailey at 302-559-6458, or email, [email protected].

A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE FAITH RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS … So many times in my life, I have failed to start something because I had not yet adequately prepared. I would have started working out or going for a jog, but I needed to get the right shoes. I would have started eating right if only I could find the time and money to buy the right foods. I would have started that journaling project, but I couldn't without a really nice leather-bound journal. I would have, I would have, and I would have!

I know many people can relate. We offer up excuses for so many things. Sometimes we even get to the point where we do start something, but by then, we have already lost so much time.

Some of us are thinking about taking a stewardship way of life seriously, but we are just not ready yet. We would be more generous if we can first get out of debt. We would give of our time, but we have to wait until the kids get older or until we fully research our options. The truth is, we don't have to be in any particular state of life or have any specific financial portfolio to start giving our very selves to God. God takes us as we are now. No resume needed. Why waste so much time thinking about getting started and becoming serious? Time is a gift given to all of us. As we think and prepare endlessly, we are practicing poor stewardship. The time to start is today. Who wants to answer God one day at the gates of Heaven saying, "I would have."? - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We have heard the story of the Good Samaritan so many times. Have we ever realized that it is an enemy and outcast who is the hero of the story? Freed from laws that limit acts of mercy and compassion, the Samaritan becomes the example of how to love God by loving our neighbor. Our minds know what our faith teaches, and our mouths know what words to speak. Ultimately, deep down in our conscience, we know how we ought to act. Yet, as we encounter each new

day, do we always do what we are called to do? Our neighbors live next to us and far away. They are down the street, sitting beside us, living in Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, Guatemala, Poland, Russia, China, Korea, and Iraq. Our neighbors are even found in people who want to hurt us. How do we love them as Jesus asks us to? How we answer this question will determine how much we really love God.

"The remedy for fear is trust in God." Caryll Houselander
