A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKIn our Gospel, we see a very polite, respectful, and eager young man run to Jesus to learn from Him. Luke’s Gospel tells us he was a magistrate or kind of Justice of the Peace. We know that he believed in eternal life and wanted it; an unusual wisdom in someone of his position and age.

Jesus answers by telling the lad to “keep the commandments;” and He specifically listed the six that deal with human relationships, the more difficult ones to observe. The young ruler responds in the affirmative saying “I kept all of them since youth.” Jesus then looks at him “with love,” a benevolent concern, and tells him to then sell his possessions to benefit the needy, and follow Him as a disciple. Unwilling to do this, the youth went away "sorrowful.” What was holding him back?

Twice Jesus tells us how hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God. The Christian walk is difficult but more so for the wealthy because they often grow too accustomed to affluence. Jesus clearly says for effect that it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. Can this be done? Of course not! There is nothing spiritually wrong with wealth itself. The problem is in the security we desire and hoard in a consumer-driven society. So often we are just too comfortable with what we want or have rather than with what we really need and this tension holds us back from fully committing to the Lord. To reiterate, the wealth itself is not the problem, but our false sense of security in those attachments that cannot buy us true happiness or everlasting life. Jesus' disciples were horrified at His words. "Who then can be saved?" Secretly—we all would love to win the lottery. Christ pushes the point that one cannot save his/herself through money, skills, talents, intellect, or good looks! Salvation is from God alone, by His grace. Jesus assures us that we have our part to play and are rewarded for our efforts but God alone can satisfy what we really desire. Priests’ Retreat - Next week, all active Diocesan priests are required to gather for a retreat with Bishop Malooley in Malvern, PA. Some retired priests will be on call for an emergency. The 6:30 and 8:00 Daily Masses on Tuesday, October 23, Wednesday, October 24 and Thursday, October 25 will be Communion Services in our church, celebrated by our Deacons. The Mass intentions that are scheduled for those days will be satisfied by our parish priests in Malvern. Keep all of us in prayer next week.

The teachers and children in KA are praying and thinking daily about one of their classmates who is ill. They decided to make a Get-Well Wreath for her.

Each child thought of a special message for their friend which their teacher typed for them. Then the children used fancy scissors to cut out their messages and glued them onto a

colorful hand print. They added bright smile-face stickers, and glued the hands onto a foam board wreath. A pretty pink bow was added and it was ready to be delivered to their friend. Even though the children are in Kindergarten, their greetings were sincere and heart-felt. Great work KA!

INSPIRE

Marriage Moments: It is not good for anyone to be alone. In marriage you are blessed to have chosen a helpmate to share your spiritual journey toward home. Make some time to be alone together today.

Parenting Pointers: Don't downplay your teen's troubles even if you think they are trivial. Teens are working on the skills they need to become functioning adults. Offer support in the form of listening. What may seem small to you may be very big to your teen. Actually this same maxim works for children of all ages.

By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

Vocations: In today’s first reading, the writer of the Book of Wisdom says, “I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.” Together, we need to pray for prudence and wisdom; we need to ask God for guidance, especially when we are young and preparing to take our place in the world. Could God be calling you to the priesthood or religious life? Call or write Fr. Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113; [email protected]). Please visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

General Intercessions: For our young people, that they be blessed with prudence, wisdom, and the grace of discernment as they seek God’s will for their lives, we pray to the Lord!

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS: Priest: Let us pray for priestly and religious vocations. All: O God, we earnestly beseech Thee to bless the Church with many priests, brothers, and sisters, who will love Thee with their whole hearts, be faithful to their vocations, and gladly spend their entire lives to teach Thy truths, serve Thy Church, and to make Thee known and loved.Priest: Bless our families, bless our children. All: Choose from our homes those who are needed for Thy work. Priest: O Mary, Queen of priestly and religious vocations: All: Pray for us. Pray for our priests, seminarians, and religious. Obtain for us the grace of many more. Amen. (please offer your reception of Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month for vocations.) Prayer for Parents for Priestly and Religious Vocations: O God, grant that at least one of our sons may become a priest or religious brother, and one of our daughters a religious sister. We ourselves want to live as good Christians, and to guide our children always to do what is right, so that we may receive the grace, O God, to be allowed to give Thee a holy priest, brother, or sister! Amen. (Conclude with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.)
