In last week’s Clergy Corner I wrote on the idea of “couple power”. I emphasized how powerful can be the influence of parents when they together give their children the gift of positive example, especially in the area of our Faith.

This fourth Sunday of Easter is often designated as Good Shepherd Sunday because each Liturgical year, on this particular Sunday of the Easter Season, Christ Jesus describes

Himself as our Good Shepherd. And, because of this theme of leadership within our Church, we often use this time to reflect upon the Church vocations of ordained priesthood and Religious Life. It is also for this reason that we, here at St. John, use this particular time as our annual Clergy Appreciation Week.

So I would like to take last week’s theme of couple power and apply it to the story of my own call to priesthood. I have several times mentioned how my maternal grandmother helped to develop my own love of God and my perception of being called to ordained priesthood.

However, I need to add to my grandmother’s influence the example of my parents as well. I am afraid that my family of origin was typical of American dysfunction. But, despite all our shortcomings, there was one thing which shone forth above all the negative elements: namely the manner in which both of my parents were on the same page when it came to the practice of the Catholic Faith.

My dad’s grandfather and great uncle were both Baptist ministers in rural Tennessee. But on January 10, 1943 he not only received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation but he married my mom in St. Mary Church of Winnsboro, Louisiana. Once my dad returned from World War II, their Catholic Faith was a practiced part of their marriage relationship, so much so that I became convinced the most precious gift I had ever been given was the gift of my Faith.

Our KC Council will host the St. John Quarterly Blood Drive from 8am until 1:30 pm on Sunday, June 2. The drive will be held in conjunction with the K. C. jambalaya fundraiser after the 9:30 and 11:30 am. Masses. The Ladies Altar Society will hold a sweets sale along with the jambalaya fund raiser.

The K. C.’s also will be assembling the Hope Bags for the homeless shelter beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Activity Center. Anyone who would like to help is welcome to do so. See page 6 for items needed for the Hope Bags.

Thank You for supporting the good works of the Knights of Columbus and the Ladies Altar Society. We are grateful to the members of these ministries and we deeply appreciate all they do for St. John Parish.
