Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, If you were married civilly, that is not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage in the eyes of the Church. Some couples believe that a marriage before a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with 2 witnesses. (There are limited interfaith exceptions with proper permission.)

I invite you to speak with one of our priests if there are any questions or if indeed you wish to validate your marriage. The process can be very simple and your marriage will then be blessed by the Church.

The special series for Young Adults, “Love and Responsibility—Young Adults Building Healthy Relationships”, based on Pope Saint John Paul II’s pastoral experience and wisdom, continues this Wednesday night, June 28th, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Archdiocesan Youth Retreat Center, Sacred Heart Hall (Basement of the Chapel), 499 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, NJ 07032.

Longing for healthy and lasting relationships is key to happiness. The approach that best allows for these healthy relationships to develop and grow is based on the study of the human person as a whole. This week, the topic is “Attractions and Distractions.” This session will address the very apparent realities that help or hinder us in our quest for friendship and deeper intimacy. For more information, go to www.rcan.org/evangelization or visit Facebook Page: Facebook.com/EvangiRCAN.

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Jesus’ call to His disciples was (and continues to be) a call, first and foremost, to become like Him. When He called Andrew and Simon Peter, He told them that He would make them into fishers of people. By following Him, they would be transformed into His likeness. Jesus’ heart would become theirs; like their Master, they would long for the day when all people would hear the good news and accept the gospel message.

Jesus also warned his disciples that sharing in the life of the Master is not without its challenges and difficulties: “If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household”. At the same time, Jesus repeatedly told them not to be afraid of what might happen to them. With the confidence of one Who Himself had been maligned, hated, threatened, and ultimately plotted against, Jesus knew what it was to face frightening situations and triumph over them.

Because we are members of Jesus’ Body, we all share in His victory over the evil one. This does not mean that we will be completely free from the devil’s temptations; they remain a part of all disciples’ lives in this world. What it does mean is that we need never succumb, however fierce the attack may seem or however weak we may feel. Our Master—the Lord Jesus Christ—is in us to comfort and strengthen us. He is our wisdom and will give us all we need as we turn to Him in humble faith.

In these days as we see belief in God and obedience to His commands coming under increasing fire, we CAN have hope and continue along the path of discipleship. Christ is in us; His love surrounds us; He will never abandon us. He will acknowledge us before the Father as we remain faithful to Him. Let us not lose heart, for He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world.

“Lord Jesus, help us to trust in Your presence within us. We want to become like You and be true disciples of our gracious and loving Master.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.” Matthew 10: 32

Do you share your Catholic faith with others? Do you defend your Catholic faith or do you remain silent when the situation arises? Do you pray in public before meals? Pray for the strength and courage to be a joyful witness of our Catholic faith when the opportunity presents itself.
