Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we say “good-bye” to Fr. Ernie this weekend, we thank him for his dedicated priestly witness to us over these last 14 years, and we wish him well in his new assignment at Ascension in New Milford. We welcome Fr. Wilson Chu, our summer parochial vicar, for what will likely be his last summer with us. Having defended his thesis in Spain, he will be returning to teach in the seminary of his diocese this autumn. Fr. Arcadio Muñoz, Fr. Ernie’s classmate and replacement, will be joining us midweek from Ascension parish to begin his service to us here. We are truly blessed here to have both the quantity and quality of priests which surpasses most other parishes!
+++ Our friends at Clinton Avenue Reformed Church are hosting “A Night with the Giants!” in partnership with Athletes in Action, at their church hall, 58 James St., on Saturday June 26th at 6:00pm. Come and hear the personal testimonies and stories of great NY Giants and enjoy an “All You Can Eat” Beefsteak Dinner catered by Nightingale Catering of Clifton. Adults: $25; children 5-12: $8.95. Children under 5—free. Tickets can be purchased by contacting their church office at 201-384-2454, fax 201-384-2585, or email [email protected].
+++ Generally, the Archdiocesan Office of Parish Internal Audit visits a parish with the change of the pastor. Since I have completed my usual second term as of July 31st, even though I have been granted a third term of six years by Archbishop Myers, it seemed an appropriate time to conduct an audit, which will take place on August 4th. In addition to our parish accounts, any group or society which has a checking account with our parish name or has used our parish federal tax identification number in establishing the account must provide for me and the auditors by August 1st copies of all bank statements for the period beginning June 1, 2009 up to June 30, 2010, copies of all bank reconciliatons for the same period, checkbook stubs, checks, and deposit slips for the same period. Accounts related to Transfiguration Academy are not part of our parish audit.
+++ Thank you to all who have made and continue to make their pledges to the 2010 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As of June 5th, our pledge total has risen to $200,501.50, which is almost 88% of our stretch goal of $228,629.50. If you have not done so, please remember to return your completed pledge envelope either in the collection basket or bring it to the rectory office, or return it in the mail directly to the Archdiocese. I count on every family to participate in some way this year.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols
Reflection on the Gospel
In today’s Gospel, Simon the Pharisee is resentful of the “sinful” woman who is anointing and kissing the feet of Jesus. Jesus teaches Simon a lesson in forgiveness: The greater the sin forgiven, the greater the love expressed. Jesus invites us to cancel debts and forgive those who have trespassed against us. Yet our wounds may be deep. Forgiveness may seem unthinkable. We have gone to war to avenge 9/11, and personal hurt can easily define our very existence. But if we do not forgive, then how can we say the Lord’s Prayer and truly mean it? Have you been forgiven much? Have you loved much? If the answer is yes, then you have heard the good news and are able to share it with others. The long version of this Gospel ends with a list of the names of women who followed Jesus. The group included Mary Magdalene; Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza; a woman named Susanna; and others. They have in common an experience of Jesus’ mercy and healing power. They stand in sharp contrast to the group of Pharisees who reject Jesus. The women have understood the gospel of forgiveness and love and have chosen to follow Jesus. We are invited to join them.

Transfiguration Academy Academy marks Completion of its Fourth Year
It has been a challenging and rewarding year for all involved with Transfiguration Academy. The seeds that were planted have continued to sprout. We achieved Best Transportation System in the “Future Cities” Engineering Competition, won several awards in the Bergen Catholic High School Art Contest, and had among the highest writing scores in the Archdiocese of Newark. This year’s graduating class won over $970,000.00 in scholarships, bringing the 4-year total of scholarships and grants won by our graduates to over $2,300,000.00! The Academy however is more than academics: it is also about character and faith formation, based on our Catholic Christian beliefs and traditions. Our students put their faith into action. This year, they collected food for the needy, raised funds for the Holy Childhood Society, as well as over $3,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and over $1,000 for Haitian Earthquake Victims. The faculty, administration and staff thank you and wish all a pleasant and safe summer. Please keep us in your prayers, as we begin the task of consolidation at our Bergenfield campus preparing for next year’s opening. See you in September!
