With Economic Development as the #1 priority of the Board of County Commissioners, the County’s Economic Development Department works cooperatively with local, state and federal resource agencies to assist businesses interested in locating and expanding into the County. Primary goals include creating high-wage jobs for residents, increasing the average county wage, and enhancing the commercial tax base. This update is intended to provide a quick glance to highlight specific department activities performed to encourage these outcomes.

TEAM APPROACHSt. Johns County leverages valuable resources to support overall economic development efforts through contracts with the St. Johns County Chamber (and JAXUSA), and the University of North Florida (SBDC). The County’s two ED staff members work diligently with these organizations, along with other agencies such as Enterprise Florida, CareerSource, Industrial Development Authority, Northeast Florida Regional Airport, and the St. Johns County School District, to promote economic opportunities.

Information features county attributes, demographics, pertinent news articles, resource partners, and other useful data. People conducting site evaluations and due diligence online may download marketing materials and timely data to be aware of all St. Johns County has to offer.

Florida’a St. Johns County is home to an eclectic blend of small businesses and major

employers who manufacture a diverse range of products, from military aircraft and aluminum fencing to acoustic wood panels and power supply systems. Many of these companies are in-volved in international trade and export their products worldwide. Among the county’s leading exporters are Northrop Grum-man, Rulon International, iDeal Aluminum, David Dobbs Enterprises, Solar Stik, and German-based 2G Energy.

More than 230 companies in St. Johns County either import or export. The region’s international trade is supported by the Northeast Florida Export Plan and Global Cities Initiative, which promotes the benefits of exporting. “St. Johns County supported these efforts, and has been working to encourage more local companies to explore export opportunities,” says Melissa Glasgow, St. Johns County’s director of economic development.

Through a partnership between the county and the University of North Florida, local companies are able to work with a Small Business Develop-ment Center (SBDC) certified business analyst housed in the county’s Permit Center to receive free business consulting. SBDC also provides “new-to-export” assistance, in partnership with Enterprise Florida and the U.S. Commercial Service, to assist in developing customized export marketing plans for businesses interested in developing international growth strategies.

Optimum Springs Manufacturing, for example, expressed interest in expanding its market share through exporting and worked with SBDC to complete an export marketing plan in 2015. Marco Fortini, the company’s vice president, reported that 55 percent of the company’s business is now export-relat-ed, and he credits the county’s SBDC office for being a criti-cal component in helping his business grow internationally.

The SBDC office in St. Johns County has also assisted local growers, such as Blue Sky Farms, in developing export marketing plans to position their agricultural products for international markets.

Several local manufacturers, including Northrop Grum-man, Solar Stik, and Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, are defense contractors. Their products are exported worldwide. Northrop Grumman, in particular, has established a new Aircraft Integration Center of Excellence at its existing facility in St. Augustine. The Florida location is one of five

centers of excellence nationwide. Northrop Grumman produces its E-2D Hawkeye surveillance aircraft at

this location.Another local firm, Rulon International, makes

wood ceilings and acoustical wood walls. Inter-national diversification has helped the company maintain steady growth. Jesse Reyes, the com-pany’s advertising and marketing manager, said

exporting is an important part of Rulon’s business.Reyes added that Rulon now has 120 employees

in St. Johns County. The company relocated from Brunswick, Georgia, in 2003. “It’s a great work location. It’s

really what we were looking for,” said Reyes.“St. Johns County is enormously popular as one of the Top

20 fastest growing counties in the USA,” added Glasgow.“Many business executives are attracted to the top-

ranked exemplary statewide school system, featuring award-winning career academies that provide a skilled workforce,” said Glasgow. “Others take advantage of access to multi-modal transportation networks, a growing region-al airport, and a Foreign Trade Zone designation linked to nearby JAXPORT.”

Glasgow also stated that several businesses point to partner-ships that provide them with export assistance and other re-sources in a cost-effective, low tax business environment. How-ever, she highlights that most everyone describes the world-class beaches, golfing, fishing, and other recreational opportunities as what helps them achieve the enviable work-life balance.

BUSINESS RESEARCH & ASSISTANCESt. Johns County’s Economic Development staff provided customized assistance to 137 business inquiries during FY 2016, an increase of 49% from FY 2015. Inquiries ranged from brokers, developers, consultants, and business representatives requesting information related to site selection, incentive education, general community demographics, workforce and training assistance.

Within those inquiries, staff provided requested information to 35 new qualified prospects, and 18 individuals interested in starting a business in St. Johns County. Staff also managed several ongoing projects.
