DID SOMEONE SAYmission?
St. John’s Messenger
Volume 95, Issue 9 September 16, 2015
Dear St. John’s Church family and friends,Once upon a time…..yes, it’s a story that began long ago….leaders of St. John’s developed a statement of God’s mission for St. John’s Lutheran Church. We as a congregation adopted that mission and agreed this is God’s plan for what we do in God’s name here in Northumberland.
I love the prayer Doug Manning wrote that spells it out for us: Heavenly Father, through your Holy Spirit inspire us to lives of service to Jesus, our Lord. Help us to respond with love and compassion to human needs, and to be faithful in sharing the Gospel to future generations. Lead us in faith, hope and love in our daily walk so that we will work for peace in our world, and grow in unity with all Christians. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
You’ll be hearing that prayer, more and more, in our weekly worship.
This mission statement informs who we are as disciples at St. John’s, and is meant to inform everything we do here in the name of our Lord. We will be spending a lot of time not only learning our mission statement, but incorporating it into the fabric of all our ministries. One day, all of us will be able to speak this mission statement from memory and will ask of all we do, “Does this fit the mission God has given us?”
I included the mission statement of our Lord Jesus again this month at the end of this article. Even the Savior knew his purpose in the Kingdom of God. As Jesus modeled mission for us, so we are called to follow in mission. Stay tuned for the new things yet to come!
See you in church!
Pastor Pat
“When (Jesus) came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah
was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’”
(Luke 4:16-19 – Jesus’ mission statement)
What is God’s Mission at St. John’s?
We are called to serve Jesus Christ our Lord:
By responding with love and compassion to human needs Faithfully sharing the Gospel
Working for peace, And growing in unity with all Christians
What do you have to offer?
Do you know how much goes on at St. John’s Sunday through Saturday? Goodness sake, we’re feeding people, teaching (and learning a LOT from) children, youth, and adults, studying God’s Word together, reaching out to our neighbors with blessing bags, handing out detergent and other household goods to folks who need them….we’re singing music to the Lord, bringing communion to those who can’t get out to church … we’re planning worship services and fellowship events and managing our financial gifts….we’re fixing broken doors, cameras, and cleaning up messes… we’re writing and preparing bulletins, newsletters, and classroom lessons…..
WHEW! I can’t even remember everything we do….and what I DO remember is exhausting!!!
So…I invite you to think about how God has gifted you to serve here at St. John’s. We need you!
What are your hobbies and talents? Did something I mentioned spark your attention and grab at your heartstrings? Pray about that spark….and maybe you’ll find yourself responding with a need to offer yourself in a new way to God’s mission here at St. John’s.
The conversation is happening…and soon we hope to develop a survey that will help us all learn ways we have to serve the Lord – in old AND new ways…Stay tuned….and keep your “spark” conversation with the Lord fresh…and ready to offer, “Here I am! Send me!”
Hugs…..Pastor Pat

"From the same mouth come blessing and curse." Keeping with our theme for this week of teaching and prayer, here we are all being called to speak the words of benediction, literally "good words." Of course, we can do that in public worship, but perhaps equally as impactful, is when we give the benediction of "good words" to those we meet.
Speaking words of appreciation to the grocery checker, the landscape worker, the police officer, the crossing guard, our child's teacher, or the teller at the bank, by the power of the Holy Spirit can change the trajectory of a person's life. We can speak informal benedictions to all people because we believe that God is working on every life. Our calling is to give voice to that grace: "God has blessed you," "I'll pray for you"; "God is good"; "Thank you for your kindness." Every time we speak a benediction, we're working with the Spirit to open a life up to the Word, Jesus Christ.
May our words be benedictions Lord, causing people to pause, give thanks, and consider again Your presence in their lives; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Creation's splendorIn Romans 1:20, St. Paul writes that God’s powers are on display for all people through creation. Humans, he reasons, should conclude there’s a God simply by observing.
What does creation’s splendor and beauty reveal to us about God? Take a moment and stick your head out the window. It’s amazing how colorful creation is. God isn’t a boring God who sees only in black and white. He’s a God of beauty with an amazing imagination. God creates with a splash of joy.
Every day this week, stop and ask,“What is God’s creation revealing to me about his character?”

A BIG THANK YOUIf you have looked around St. John’s recently you will have noticed many improvements. We received funds from the H. Blanche Savidge Community Trust which enabled us to make these improvements. Some of the projects/improvements done were: purchasing AEDs, murals and improvements to the Preschool room, a security system, upgrading our technology, upgrading the heating/air conditioning in the sanctuary, installing air conditioning in Fellowship Hall, making exterior improvements and still to come upgrades to our sound system.
The new lighter weight tables and chairs in Fellowship Hall were purchased with money received from the S. Luther Savidge Charitable Foundation. This foundation also provides funds so we can continue His Lighthouse Café and Kathryn’s Kloset.
Thank you to both the H. Blanche Savidge Community Trust and the S. Luther Savidge Charitable Foundation for the support given to St. John’s. We are very fortunate that we have been able to do so many projects and to continue our outreach programs.

"I Come to the Garden Alone," C. Austin MillsI come to the garden alone,While the dew is still on the roses; And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,The Son of God discloses.
Refrain:And He walks with me, and He talks with me,And He tells me I am His own,And the joy we share as we tarry there,None other has ever known.
He speaks, and the sound of His voiceIs so sweet the birds hush their singing; And the melody that He gave to meWithin my heart is ringing. Refrain
I'd stay in the garden with HimTho' the night around me be falling; But He bids me go; thro' the voice of woe,His voice to me is calling. Refrain
I am writing this devotional from the little shack at the edge of our garden. This master closet-sized shack fits our desk, a small filing cabinet and a chair. The walls are lined with books. The two windows face out to the garden. Each day this summer, I have come out here alone, sitting in the shack and reading my daily devotional. A fuchsia and a hummingbird feeder hang side by side outside the window. I watch the hummingbirds and pray.
When I end my devotion, I walk directly out to the garden where I check my growing flowers and vegetables. I always feel that God is walking with me. Sometimes I sing a newer contemporary version of the old hymn "I Come to the Garden." It is by Watermark and titled "In the Garden/There is None Like You." This "garden time" grants me the saving graces of stepping forth into the day in strength (instead of fear), of having a melody placed in my heart and of remembering that God has called me his own.
Dear God, thank you for the wonder of your creation and that you meet us where we walk. As you walk beside us, may we hear the melody that you want us to be in tune with this day. Amen.
