CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrong-headed the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit. By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never “rebaptizing” Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the candidates’ baptismal dignity, and we celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the Eucharist.

CLOTHING DRIVE St. Joseph Cares will be holding a clothing drive at St. Joseph Church on Sunday, June 28. Please have all clothes folded and bagged. Place in the All-Purpose Room near the windows. All clothes will be removed that weekend. To donate clothes at other times, please drop them off in the yellow bins at Mantua Center Christian Church and not at St. Joe’s. The last Free Clothing Giveaway at the old Mantua Center School is scheduled for August 8th with strict guidelines.

Baptisms will once again be celebrated beginning in July and may be scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday with Fr. Ed or Deacon Gerry. Advanced registration is required. Parent Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held as needed and coordinating with parents’ schedule (parents must attend if they haven’t done so within the last three years). If you believe raising your child as a Catholic-Christian is one of your most important duties as a parent, please call the Parish Office (330-274-2253).

ST. JOSEPH PARISH & COVID-19 PANDEMIC Masses are currently being held at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays. Baptisms will resume in July and may be scheduled at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday. No other large gatherings will be permitted on the premises until further notice. All recommended precautions concerning social distancing, wearing of masks, and sanitizing will be taken.

DISPENSATION FROM OBLIGATION TO ATTEND SUNDAY MASS The Catholic faithful who reside in the Diocese of Youngstown and all other Catholics in the diocese and especially those who are sick, or at high risk of becoming sick continue to be dispensed from their Sunday obligation until further notice.

Understanding the desire of many to return to church, it remains important for those who are at greater risk to refrain from returning until such time they feel comfortable and confident to do so. Those who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to another with the virus within 14 days should not attend Mass in accordance with national, state and local health directives. Those over 60 years of age and those who are vulnerable as a result of illness (including people who have chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma, serious heart conditions, comprised immune system, severe obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease) should be extra diligent in practicing precautions like frequent hand washing, social distancing, regularly cleaning surfaces, and staying home.

Parishioners are encouraged to continue viewing Mass online or TV if not attending in person. For more information and links about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the church, please visit https://stjosephmantua.com/covid-19.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The Diocese of Youngstown’s Office of marriage and Family Ministry will be sponsoring one Wedding Anniversary Celebration honoring couples observing their 25th, 40th, 50th and over wedding anniversaries in 2020. Due to COVID-19, this celebration will take place on Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLING Collect your clean cans in plastic bags, crushing if possible, and deposit in the designated container in front of the church. They will be picked up every weekend. The Fundraising Committee thanks you.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF RAVENNA COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES Amidst the turmoil of 2020 thus far, Catholic Charities has continued to serve those in need, adjusting procedures as necessary. While we don’t know exactly what the upcoming school year will look like, students will still need basic school supplies, and they will begin registering students to receive those supplies on July 1. Last year, with the help of many generous donors, this agency assisted approximately 300 students with items needed to begin the school year. They anticipate a similar demand this year. To assist with this endeavor, St. Joseph’s will be holding a school supply drive. If you are someone who is looking for a way to give support during these extraordinary times, please donate to this worthwhile cause by July 26th (look for collection bins in the Narthex). Below is a list of the most-needed items, although any school supply will be gratefully accepted. Thank you!

Backpacks/book bags Spiral notebooks Notebook paper 1” & 2” three-ring binders Blue, black, red pens Crayons #2 pencils Colored pencils Markers Sharpie markers Dry erase markers Highlighters Glue sticks/bottles Pocket folders Scissors Erasers Pencil boxes/pouches Tissues Disinfectant wipes

HELP OUT OUR ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communicate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulletin that you receive is paid for through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertisements in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through.

Dear St. Joseph Parish Community,

After consultations with my religious community, I have made the decision to retire from active ministry. I related this to Fr. Ed in mid-May and he was most gracious in his response, for which I am very appreciative.

Now I wish to inform the parish at large and to express my appreciation for the privilege of ministering among you for the past 10 years. I have been part of the joy and the pain in many of your lives. I have been a teacher of the faith among you. You have been teachers as well to me in your devotion to St. Joe’s, in the incredible summer Ox Roast, and in your fidelity to our Catholic faith. Thank you.

There is no opportunity to “celebrate” at this time of COVID. You cannot even celebrate the life of so many loved ones who have died during these times of safe social distancing. And, I’m not going anywhere, but will remain at my Mantua residence at least for the coming year, so you will see me round about and available as a friend, confidant, visitor, and one who cares about you.

If I were to consider the highlight of my time here, it would be this: that God in his provident goodness allowed me to complete my formal ministry life as a Sister of Notre Dame in this wonderful parish and in this wonderful town.

With love, Sr. Joyce
