ASCENSION OF THE LORD

FEET ON THE GROUND “Until next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!” Not today’s scriptural wis-dom, but legendary DJ Casey Kase-m’s sage advice, heard across Amer-ica for generations, American Top 40’s challenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn’t quoting scripture, to-day’s Acts of the Apostles offers simi-lar advice. As Jesus ascended, disci-ples “were looking intently at the sky.” Wouldn’t we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heart-breaking focus on this blood-stained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus’ first disciples, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should “keep reaching for” heaven, we need to “keep our feet on the ground.” Ascension’s scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as “ascended into heaven” lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our recognition and loving service.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

The mystery of the Ascension has to do with holding in tension a sense of God’s nearness, along with the burden caused by apparent signs of ab-sence. The risen Jesus says to Mary Magdalene, “Do not cling to me,” per-haps pointing out to her that his physical presence to the disciples was time-bound and temporary. It was a gift for their transformation, and after forty days, he vanished from their sight and hearing, though never out of their consciousness. They do not mourn at his going this time: there is no trace of the disci-ples who hid in fear at his crucifixion, no sense of the women who wept soft-ly as they carried ointments to the tomb through the dewy morning light. Instead, the scriptural accounts show them full of joy, comforted by his promise to be with them forever, and open to the Spirit’s power. They are joyful, energized, aware, and united with one another in love. They seem to grasp an awareness that if the mission to the whole world was a serious one, then the presence of the Risen Christ could not be pinned down to any one place or time, but had to be always and everywhere completely availa-ble. All peoples, all times, all cultures were opened to receive him in this moment of the Ascension. The energy of this feast is drawn not from ab-sence, but renewed and deeper presence.

MEN OF GALILEE, WHY GAZE IN WONDER AT THE HEAVENS? THIS JESUS WHOM YOU SAW ASCENDING INTO HEAVEN WILL RETURN AS YOU SAW HIM GO, ALLELUIA. ACTS 1:11

GRANT, WE PRAY, almighty God, that we, who believe that your Only Begotten Son, our Redeemer, ascended this day to the heavens, may in spir-it dwell already in heavenly realms. Who lives and reigns with you in the uni-ty of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in his name, reminding them that he is always present through his Spirit (3). Jesus ascended to his Father amid cries of gladness (Ps), entering into the heavenly sanctuary (2b). We are to be his witnesses (1), mindful of the great hope to which we are called (2a).

FIRST READING—ACTS 1:1-11 Jesus tells the disciples

they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth.

PSALM—PSALM 47 God mounts his throne to shouts of joy:

a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

SECOND READING—EPHESIANS 1:17-23 God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens.

GOSPEL—LUKE 24:46-53 As Jesus blessed his disciples he parted from them

and was taken up to heaven.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD ASCENSIÓN DEL SEÑOR

Stepping Stones Moving Forward!

Father Tyler, along with Father Alfhones, Father Eliseo, some members of the Core Team Design Sub-Committee and Core Team Chairperson, Paula Thiessen, had dinner with Bishop Taylor while he was in NWA to celebrate Confirmation on May 4. We have communicated with the Diocese throughout the early plan-ning stages for construction of a church, just as we did for the land purchase. Before we get to the formal approval process required by the Diocese for new construction, we believe it is important to keep both the Bishop and the Diocesan Building Commission up-to-date and informed of our pro-gress.

Bishop Taylor agrees that we need a church and is supportive of our desire for a traditional design.

The Bishop recommends that we continue:

√ our programming work (defining what we need and where within the building); √ our research for the best site to build a church, given the land that we purchased; √ our research on the pros and cons of new versus used/repurposed liturgical art,

stained glass, and furnishings for the church. All of this preliminary work will help us to be fiscally responsible and value engineer the overall cost

of the project. Time is on our side to plan and construct the timeless, perma-nent church that our parishioners desire and which meets our needs in a fis-cally responsible manner. We ask for your continued support of our Phase III Building Fund collections. All funds collected will be deposited into a savings account and go directly towards costs associ-ated with the construction of our church.

Your generosity is truly appreciated.

Thank you for your past, present, and future support of our parish and school! It's a very exciting time to be a parishioner!

MARRIAGE MOMENTS by Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net Ascension "Thursday" is often celebrated on the nearest Sun-day. Let's not be picky about dates but find a way to "lift up" your beloved today - a compliment, a favor, or maybe just be silly and fly a kite together.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD ASCENSIÓN DEL SEÑOR
