The Living Word 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

T he Nativity of St John the Baptist as told in the Gospel of

Luke, begins with the Angel Gabriel

appearing to John’s father in the temple.

Gabriel told Zachariah that his elderly wife

Elizabeth was to have a son named John. When

Zachariah left the temple he was unable to

speak, for Gabriel had told Zachariah that he

would be left mute until his son was born. After

Elizabeth gave birth there was disagreement

among the family’s relatives over the naming

of the baby. When they approached Zachariah

he wrote, “His name is John”. From that

moment, Zachariah was able to speak again

and he praised God and made a prophesy

about John, saying: “You will be called the

prophet of the Most High.”

First Reading Zec 12:10-11; 13:1A reading from the prophet Zechariah

They will look on the one whom they have pierced.

It is the Lord who speaks: ‘Over the House of David and the citizens of Jerusalem I will pour out a spirit of kindness and prayer. They will look on the one whom they have pierced; they will mourn for him as for an only son, and weep for him as people weep for a first-born child. When that day comes, there will be great mourning in Judah, like the mourning of Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. When that day comes, a fountain will be opened for the House of David and the citizens of Jerusalem, for sin and impurity.’The word of the Lord.

Responsorial PsalmPs 62:2-6. 8-9. R. v.2

(R.) My soul is thirsting for you,

O Lord my God.

1. O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water.

(R.)

2. So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. For your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. (R.)

3. So I will bless you all my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be filled as with

a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy.

(R.)

4. For you have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. (R.)

Second Reading Gal 3:26-29A reading from the letter of St Paul

to the Galatians

You who have been baptised have put on Christ.

You are, all of you, sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. All baptised in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ, and there are no more distinctions between Jew and Greek,

slave and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Merely by belonging to Christ you are the posterity of Abraham, the heirs he was promised. The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation Jn 10:27Alleluia, alleluia!

My sheep listen to my voice,

says the Lord;

I know them, and they follow me.

Alleluia!

Gospel Lk 9:18-24A reading from the holy Gospel

according to Luke

You are the Messiah sent by God. It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer much.

One day when Jesus was praying alone in the presence of his disciples he put this question to them, ‘Who do the crowds say I am?’ And they answered, ‘John the Baptist; others Elijah; and others say one of the ancient prophets come back to life.’ ‘But you,’ he said, ‘who do you say I am?’ It was Peter who spoke up. ‘The Christ of God’ he said. But he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone anything about this.

‘The Son of Man’ he said, ‘is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.’

Then to all he said, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, that man will save it.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection by Dianne Bergant

We often look at ourselves in order to discover our identity as disciples, when actually we should look first to Christ in order to discover who it is that we are serving. There was something very prophetic about Jesus. He called people to reform and he promised salvation, just

as the prophets had. Jesus identified himself as a suffering messiah. Though he referred to himself as the Son of Man, he aligned himself with the figure of the Suffering Servant found in Isaiah. He attracted people from every walk of life and from every political and social sector of the population. This is the Christological image that should determine the character of our discipleship.

Since Jesus was not a political messiah, his followers will always have to struggle with the vagaries and ambiguities of political power. Since he was more than a prophet, his followers would always have to struggle with the radical challenges and incomprehensible mysteries of and inevitable resistance to his teaching.

Jesus invited all people to follow him. Paul develops this notion more explicitly when he says that identification with Christ in discipleship breaks down the barriers set up in society by the differences between Jew and Greek, slave and free person, male and female. The privilege that is often associated with political classifications of whatever kind is cancelled. Not even disciples can claim privilege. This is the kind of messiah that Jesus was. This is the kind of discipleship to which we are called.
