TypesofVocationalEducationandTrainingPrograms

VETinSchoolsVocational Education & Training (VET) is a fully integrated component of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and theVictorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). This allows students to combine their VCE and VCAL with targeted vocationaltrainingandexperienceintheworkplace.Togainmaximumcredit,VCEstudentsarerequiredtostudyanumberofcompulsoryVCEunits.WithintheVCEuptoeightunitsmaybeVETunits.StudentsundertakingtheVictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning(VCAL)arerequiredtocompleteaminimumof90hoursofVETunitsofcompetency(seethelistofVETprogramsabove)forbothVCALIntermediateandVCALSenior.

School-BasedApprenticeships&TraineeshipsScheme(SBAT)St Joseph’s College,with the assistance of Sunraysia&Murray Group Training,MADEC, AUSNAC, VECCI andMEGTwill supportstudentswantingtoapply forpositions intheSchool-basedApprenticeship&Traineeshipscheme. (Pleasenote:theschooldoesnot findemployers for thestudents). AnSBATcanbecompletedaspartofaVCEorVCALprogramandcanprovidecredits forWorkRelatedSkills,IndustrySpecificSkills,orVCEUnits1&2and/orUnits3&4andinsomecasesastudyscore.SBAT’s canbeoffered inany industry area suchasCarpentry,Hospitality,Automotive, Electro-technology, Engineering,BusinessAdministration,RetailandHairdressing.AslongasthestudentcanfindanemployertohirethemthenanSBATcanbeundertaken.Arrangementscanvarydependingontheemployerandwhatsuitsastudent’stimetable.Studentsmustaverage13hoursperweekofemploymentand trainingduringschoolhours tosatisfy theSBATrequirements. Studentscanalsoundertakea traineeshiporapprenticeshipoutsideofschoolhoursandstill receivecreditstowardstheirVCEorVCALprogram. This isknownasapart-timeapprenticeshiportraineeship.StudentsshouldspeakwiththeVETCoordinator(JuliaLewis)iftheyareinterestedinpursuingthisoption.FormoreinformationonVETinSchoolsandSBATprogramsgotowww.vcaa.vic.edu.auRelevantPolicyandProcedureInformation

SkillsRecognitionSkillsrecognitionistheprocessofattainingformalnationallyaccreditedqualificationsbasedonyourvaluableworkhistory,previousstudyandlifeexperiences.Itispossibletousetheskillsrecognitionprocesstoincreaseyouremploymentopportunities.Any combination of formal or informal training, education andwork or life experience can be considered relevant to achievingrecognition for certificate or diploma level qualifications through this assessment process. The application involves collection ofevidenceofrelevantexperiencesothatcompetenciescanbeassessed.

Thisevidenceisthenassessedbyaregisteredtrainingorganisation.Theregisteredtrainingorganisationwillberesponsibleforthefinalassessmentoutcome.

ThereisnoformaltrainingrequiredbutafteryouhavecompletedtheskillsrecognitionprocessyoumaythenchoosetoundertakegaptrainingifrequiredtocompleteaCertificateorDiploma.

The Careers team at St Joseph’s College will provide advice to help you select the course that’s right for you. The friendly,experienced,supportiveandqualifiedteamwillassistyoutoconvertyourvaluableformaleducation,workandlifeexperienceintoformal nationally accredited qualifications. You will be guided through the process of skills recognition or Recognition of PriorLearning(RPL)andbe informedaboutwhatrelevantevidenceneedstobesubmittedwithyourapplication.Ongoingfollow-up isprovidedtokeepyouinformed.StudentComplaintsandAppealsRegisteredTrainingOrganisations(RTO)aimtoresolvecomplaintshonestly,fairlyandwithoutbias.TheNationalVETRegulator(NVR)requirestheRTOtodefinethecomplaintsandappealsprocessthatensureslearnerscomplaintsandappealsareaddressedeffectivelyandefficiently. Inadditiontotheserequirements,theRTOmustmeetrequirementsundertheHigherEducationSupportAct2003.PleaserefertotherelevantRTO’swebsitefortheirindividualpoliciesandprocedures.

StudentCodeofConductThepurposeofanystudentcodeofconductistoensurethesafety,equityandwellbeingofeveryoneattherelevantteachingandlearningprovidertoberesponsibleforaneducationallyappropriateenvironmentforstudents.Studentshaverightsandresponsibilitiesasmembersoftherelevantteachingandlearningprovidertoensurethatallstudentsaretreatedwithrespectandfairnessandareprovidedwithasupportiveandstimulating learningenvironmenttopursuetheirgoals,the teaching and learning provider has outlined the following student expectations and responsibilities within their individualstudentcodeofconductpolicies.PleaserefertotherelevantRTO’swebsitefortheirindividualpoliciesandprocedures.
