COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2013 YEARBOOK We have just taken delivery of the St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools (SAPSS) 2013 Yearbook. Once again this edition is a 200 page full color magazine which captures the highlights of the centenary year of Catholic secondary education in Port Macquarie. The four SAPSS campuses are featured in the Yearbook: MacKillop Senior College, St Joseph’s Regional College, Newman Senior Technical College and St Paul’s High School. Each school has presented the highlights from its curricular and extra-curricular programs capturing activities in classrooms, in the swimming pool, on sporting fields, on the stage, in church, on excursions, retreats and in the broader community. Our SAPSS family of schools unashamedly strive to pursue ‘Excellence in Education’. I am confident that you will see in the pages of this magazine much evidence of excellence in learning, pastoral care, sport, creative arts, personal development and in spiritual formation. A couple of years ago, Clare Hayes who came into teaching with a background in television and print media, took over as editor of the Yearbook. This very professional publication is testament to her skill and dedication. She was assisted by Amy Chaloner from St Joseph’s Regional, Jaimie Quinn from Newman Senior Technical College and Patrick Cowan, Robyn Cornale, Lincoln Beddoe and Jan Shepherd from St Paul’s. Congratulations to all involved on an excellent publication. The Yearbook is a great keepsake for students and families. I still have all six from my time in high school all those years ago and still refer to them from time to time as I reflect on the people and events that shaped my life. I am sure you will agree that this Yearbook is great value for $15.00. All Year 8 and Year 11, 2014 who attended either St Paul’s or St Joseph’s Regional High School in 2013 have paid for their copy. Others can purchase one through their school office. Thank you in anticipation for your support for this great publication. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I am Your Witness This week, staff from St Joseph’s Regional College gathered for our first “I am Your Witness” prayer gathering. I would like to thank Assistant Leader of Evangelisation, Mrs Helen Gilbert for initiating this program of prayer for our College community. At the conclusion of each gathering, we pray: I expect to pass through this world but once; and good thing therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show, let me do it now; Let me not defer it or neglect it; for I shall not pass this way again. Each fortnight, staff will now take some reflective time together to pray together for our community’s intentions. Year 11 Information Evening On Tuesday, the College welcomed our Year 11 families to a HSC Information Evening. The session commenced with Corben Rees and Christa Morrow leading us in prayer and then most ably lead by Mr David Lewis (Year 11 Senior Coordinator) and Mr Ian Lutton (Leader of Curriculum). They were assisted by Taylor Kennedy who reflected on her experiences as a Senior College student, and Leaders of respective Key Learning areas. I would like to thank all staff for presenting a highly informative evening and thank Mrs Carol Avery who coordinated the supper for the all participants.

100% Attendance Awards At this week’s assembly the College community recognised the commitment and perseverance of students who last year achieved 100% attendance. This excellent effort not only reflects students’ attentiveness to their studies, but also their overall support for making the most of every opportunity made available to them throughout the College year. Congratulations to the following students: Torren Hunter, Ashley Martin, Abbey Jones, Kaylun Dixon, Joel Moore, Zachary Bell-Allen, Stephanie McManus, Reuben Gammon, Patrick McKinnon, Makenzie Dobson, Jacob Gaskill, Sheree Manns and Moira Smith. Lions Youth of the Year 2013 marked a watershed of achievement for St Joseph’s Regional College students participating in the Lions Youth of the Year competition. Congratulations to Sam Turner (Lions Youth of the Year); Eleanor Wright (Lions Public Speaker of the Year) and to Tayla Furey and Leilani Gobius who were formidable finalists in the competition. Thank you also to Mrs Brigette Rieger who worked so hard to prepare all of our students who participated in the competition. 2013 High Achievers Congratulations to the following students HSC High Achievers for their outstanding results and nominations in the 2013 HSC.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Year 7 Religious Education This is an exciting time for the Year 7 students as they begin their journey into high school. The first unit in RE: What it Means to Be Catholic should assist your child with settling into our college community and St Agnes’ Parish. Parents can become familiar with the program by going to our Moodle site. The textbook and Understanding Faith Resource is also available on the site. During this term we will also have a Year 7 Reflection Day and a parent /student liturgy. For some parents, it’s a great opportunity to refresh our own understanding of what it means to be Catholic and to look at our own faith commitment. We have copies available of a book called “So You’re Sending Your Child to a Catholic School” for those families who are new to catholic schools. We will have it available at the Year 7 evening. Community Service This year again, we are encouraging students in all year groups to participate in some type of community service. This program is outlined in the diary in the blue pages 19-21. There are student representatives being chosen in each Pastoral Care class that will be highlighting opportunities for students on a regular base. If anyone knows of ways we can help out in the community, please contact the school. Sacramental Program We are in the process of gathering names of any students who may have missed out on receiving one of the sacraments in their primary years and would like to do so this year. We will meet these students individually or in small groups to provide instruction and preparation to receive the sacraments. Students can leave their names at the front office.

Youth Ministry Trainee "Hi I'm Stephanie Figgins and I am the Youth Ministry Trainee this year. I am so excited to be able to work with both staff and students to bring our theme of ‘Witness’ alive. Some of our early initiatives will be a regular lunch time prayer/youth group, in the hopes of giving students an environment where they feel open to express and discuss their faith and meet like-minded youth. The prayer/youth group will meet on Thursdays. Another aspect I will be striving to achieve is a link between our schools and the parish with particular focus on our Youth and Family Mass on Sunday evenings, 5.00pm at St Agnes Church. I will use this space regularly to keep everyone up to date with upcoming parish events and to notify of any community service opportunities. Thank you and God Bless" Stephanie Figgins Youth Ministry Trainee

Other upcoming events at The Youth Hub include: ‘The Black and White Party’

Friday, 21st February Live bands, great food and good friends

Items that can be used to draw for still-life's such as vases, tea cups, fake plants and flowers etc etc we would like real plants for our verandah so any donations would also be appreciated in the new year.

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION 2014 As our student intake increases at St Joseph’s Regional College, it has become evident that there is a need for the College to be more cost and environmentally efficient in the distribution of the newsletter. Therefore, from Term 1, Week 2 2014 the College newsletter will be emailed to all families. We understand that for some families this is not always the most convenient way of receiving the newsletter, as such, hardcopies will be available for students to collect each Friday from the College canteen; the newsletter will also be available for viewing on the College website

Year 9 Canberra Trip - Monday, 23rd – Thursday, 26th June 2014

Year 9 Canberra Trip 2014 is on Monday, 23rd – Thursday, 26th June which is the last week of Term 2. The excursion in addition to it's social, cultural and entertainment outcomes is an important part of our Year 9 History course as well as fulfilling Board of Studies requirements for a site study in this case the Australian War Memorial.

We realise the excursion is a substantial additional cost and for this reason we are advising parents in advance. The final cost and note will come home in the next couple of weeks. Parents will be able to make part payments prior to the excursion.

Europe Study Tour, January 2015

Calling for expressions of interest Dear Parent/Student, St Joseph’s Regional College and Mackillop College are considering running a joint study tour to Europe for students (open to all Year 11 and 12 students and selected Year 10 students) and interested family members in January 2015, visiting Rome, the Bay of Naples, the Western Front and Paris. The tour visits a number of sites directly relevant to core studies in the HSC subjects of both Ancient History and Modern History. The trip would also be of interest to students with an interest in art and in practicing the use of the French language. We are intending to run this tour with Academy Travel, an Australian-based company specialising in school group tours. Working closely with staff at the school, they will develop and manage a program specifically designed for our students. The first step in getting the tour off the ground is to gauge and level of serious interest among students and their family members before we organise an information evening to provide further information and to answer questions. The details of this information evening are: Date/Time: 6pm on Wednesday, 26th Venue: St Joseph’s Regional College PAC Please read through the attached flyer, particularly the sections on cost and inclusions. If you genuinely believe you are prepared to support such a financial commitment towards your child’s education and would therefore be interested in finding out more please contact Mr Warneken. Kind regards Jason Warneken Organising Teacher, St Joseph’ Regional College
