MESSAGE FROM BISHOP GEOFFREY JARRETT

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Inaugural College Mass

On Wednesday, the College community gathered with Fr. James to celebrate our Inaugural College Mass. The focus for our Mass drew upon our College theme of “Commitment”. In his homily, Fr. James displayed a number of images of sports people including our victorious Asian Cup Soccer Team, Serena Williams winner of the Women’s Australian Open and teams from the recent Junior State Cup Competition. He discussed the commitment displayed by all these sportsmen and women to achieve what they had and to follow their high aspirations.

As part of our Eucharistic celebration each Pastoral Care group were presented with a candle for their classroom prayer focus. This candle, when lit each morning will remind students of the commitment they make each day to embrace the light of Christ in their lives.

I would like to thank Fr. James, Year 11 Coordinator, Ms Heidi Flanagan, Assistant Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation Mrs Helen Gilbert, also to Mrs Wendy Welsh and all staff for their wonderful organisation on the day. Once again, Mrs Johnson ensured that our musicians once again did a fantastic job. Thank you also to Mrs Bronwyn Shipton and Mr Greg Hollis who ensured the setting was perfect for our Mass.

Thank you to our Senior Leaders who were actively involved in the Mass through Gospel readings and Prayers of Intercession. To our altar servers, musicians, thank you. Congratulations to the whole student community for their positive involvement in the Mass.

God Bless Jim Dempsey Principal

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Project Compassion Project Compassion is very much a part of our college Lenten journey. This year the theme of Project Compassion is “Food for Life”. As we begin this time of Lent, let us be mindful that this is our opportunity, in the words of Pope Francis, “to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being.

This week Jenni Miller from Caritas Australia spoke to the entire college community, thanking us for the tremendous amount of money raised last year and encouraging us to continue with all our great fundraising initiatives. She spoke about what a difference the money we raise makes to peoples lives, in developing countries.

Project Compassion provides us with a simple and easy way to combat poverty in some of the poorest areas of the world. This year we encourage each PC to decide on a goal to strive for, whether it be buying chickens for a village in Fiji or allowing clean running water in Nepal.

Remember, Project Compassion isn’t just a fundraiser, it is an invite to show compassion throughout every aspect of life and in every corner of our world. The most simple of actions can change the world, showing love and compassion is one of the most effective ways.

St Joseph’s Regional College will be providing the musicians, readers and other parts of the mass on Sunday, 1st March. We would love to see a great representation of students and family members join us in this celebration. Nora Swain

It is a two day event starting at 3.00pm on the 24th April and finishing on 25th April. There will be entertainment (Jon Stevens and Mahlia Barnes, Imogen Clark), special guests, movies, documentaries, great food options and a very special Dawn Service on ANZAC Day itself.

The History Club is an extra-curricular activity offered to Year 7 students who would like to learn more about history and get involved in making historical models.

Our current project is painting and making a 1/32 scale Roman Bireme ship with 63 crewmen and over 600 parts. (see picture). It is free to join the History club, all paint, brushes and models are provided. Students will be taught the various skills to make models – all you need is patience and a way home.

History Club is after school on Wednesdays from 3.30pm until 5.00pm, students must make sure that they can make it home after this time.

Students do not have to commit to every Wednesday; please let Mr West know if you will not be there. Why not come along and see what it is like. No problems if you decide it is not for you.

Authentication with Overdrive is with the student’s library card number, and with Wheeler’s, it’s the student email address. Year 7 classes will be orientated to these apps and platforms during Weeks 6 and 7.
