A SUMMER REFLECTION

I sought my God and my God I could not find I sought my soul and my soul eluded me.

I sought my brother/sister to serve in their need, And I found all three – my God, my soul and thee.

There are many ways to discover God in the midst of life. For some, God is to be found in the stillness of our prayer. In the words of the psalmist: “Be still and know that I am God.” In the quiet of the morning before the busyness of the day, I seek to experience God in the morning sunrise. It provides a spiritual anchor for the day and places the whole day in the context of my discipleship of the Lord Jesus. For others, as suggested by the above reflection, God is found in the ways we love and serve others. In those times of service, we become aware of our God and the deepest meaning of our lives. The actions of service can lead us to the awareness of prayer. So too, the movements of prayer within us can lead us to lives of service.

Our spirituality can begin with action or with prayer. We need to be true to who we are. But the journey of faith must involve both dimensions of life: prayer can lead to service or service can lead us back to prayer.

OUR SUMMER FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM

We are in the middle of our two-week summer faith formation program for 282 of our parish youths. Our school classrooms are brimming with their enthusiasm and the vitality. Thanks be to God for the gift of our younger parishioners. What an awesome responsibility to form and fashion our youth in their discipleship of the Lord Jesus. We are grateful to our parish catechists for their service to our youth. We teach our youth in a classroom setting. We teach our youth in the liturgy of Sunday Eucharist. But we also need to emphasize how we teach our youth in the school of life in the family setting. Parents, what a grace and a responsibility you have in being your children’s first and best teachers in the ways of faith.

What is the spiritual dimension of your family life? Do you pray together as a family? I cannot urge you strongly enough to find opportunities for family prayer—at the dinner table, at night before going to bed, coming to Church as a family, or spontaneous moments of prayer with your spouse and/or children.

You may or may not be in the habit of family prayer. But in the words of Bishop Fulton Sheen who ordained me to the priesthood, “The family that prays together stays together.”

Scripture and Softball Day. Coming up in early August, St. Joseph’s junior high kids will be “teaming” up with our sister parish, Our Lady of the America’s junior high for a day of scripture and softball. As part of this event we would like to have the kids attend a Red Wings game. At a discounted rate, each ticket will cost us $7.50. As we expect to have between 40 and 50 kids to participate, we are asking parishioners and friends to consider sponsoring a student or two to be able to go to the game. This would enable many of the kids who may not be able to afford it, the opportunity to see our very own Red Wings in action!

Sign up for any of these youth activities today by contacting Christina Schmidt ([email protected])

Stewardship REFLECTION

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” Matthew 13:22

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in worldly activities and anxieties that you have no time for God? These are questions that we all must ask of ourselves if we are going to live as God’s stewards. .

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE July 6 Offerings: Envelopes: $17,118.60 Plate (loose): $ 1,187.30 Catholic Courier: $ 99.00 Other: $ 175.50 Capital Improvements: $ 334.00 Poor Boxes/Mt. Carmel: $ 47.00

St. Joseph’s tithes on its weekly offerings, a portion of which went to St. Joseph’s Indian School for housing and education for Native American children living in poverty in South Dakota.

SUMMER ENVELOPES We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver your weekly envelopes to the parish office while you are out-of-town on vacations this summer. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here.

PLANNED GIVING Please remember St. Joseph’s Church in your Will

No matter how you decide to remember your parish, a gift from your will accomplishes several key benefits. • It sends a strong message to your heirs that the

Church played an important role in your life. • It guarantees that your generosity to the Church will

be continued even after you are gone. • It provides important assistance to our parish. • It may even provide tax benefits for your heirs. Talk to your lawyer or financial counselor today about the best way for you to remember your parish in your will.

JUSTICE:

WATER FOR SUDAN—AN UPDATE

Goodness shows itself in the generosity of St. Joseph’s Parishioners. After announcing we were $1100 shy of funding a second well and that there were envelopes at the entrances, the good people of St. Joseph’s in just last weekend’s collection donated another $1,055 and took home 50 envelopes that we hope will be returned this weekend.

The committee is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for this worthy and much needed project. The extra funds will be put to good use to help offset the cost of shipping equipment from the United States to Sudan. The project has drilled 10 new wells so far in 2008 and seventeen wells are now serving 51,000 people!

God bless everyone who contributed.

GIFT CARDS NEEDED Social Ministry is in real need of Wegmans or Top’s Market Gift cards — in any amount for needy families. Please drop them off the parish office marked to Social Ministry. Thank you!

SERVICE:

PENFIELD AREA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

With the help of St. Pauly textiles has for many years encouraged people to go green by recycling used but usable clothing. Across the country 80% of used clothing is discarded. Most of this clothing is usable and wanted by many people around the world. Penfield Habitat maintains clothing drop boxes in three separate locations: • Holy Spirit Church, 1355 Hatch Rd, Webster • East Penfield Baptist ABC, 2635 Penfield Rd, Fairport • East Rochester United Methodist Church, 357 Fairport

Rd, East Rochester As your wardrobe is updated, please use one of these drop boxes to recycle your old clothes. Helpers Needed: The clothing drop boxes require about 15 to 30 minutes of work every day to ensure the clothing is all in plastic bags and stacked so there is room for additional clothing. St. Pauly textiles empties these units weekly, but a small amount of effort is required daily to make sure the boxes remain usable to everyone. This effort is scheduled for a week at a time. A Very Catholic Conversation Volume 2 Number 44

These wonderful days of summer allow us time to relax and enjoy the warmth of our weather and hopefully a little easier schedule. In this year of Saint Paul, we could use a little of that time to learn more about the Apostle to the Gentiles.

There are a good number of sources for doing that. Our Faith Formation textbook’s website has a new section on the Pauline year. Go to www.faithfirst.com right at the top of the home page you will see a banner for Pauline Year.

Some of the resources offered are:

• General Introduction;

• Biography of Saint Paul including discussion questions;

• Current Events relating to the Pauline Year for the whole family and for kids;

• Primary Resources: a Read-Aloud Story, Word Search and Answer Key;

• Intermediate Resources: A Biography of Paul and exercise for learning about the teaching of Paul by reading some of the epistles and answer key;

• Junior High Resources: An article with more details about Paul and his life and an exercise inviting the student to write a short epistle in the Pauline style.

• Pauline Timeline: Map and the order of his letters and his journeys.

• Professional Articles: Two articles by Fr. Lou Camelli on The Heart of Saint Paul’s Message, and the other by Fr. Patrick Brennan entitled Who Are You Sir?

We are all on a journey not unlike Paul. This summer part of our journey could mix with this, and by going to this site and downloading some of the activities as individuals or as families we can come to know more about the Apostle Paul. He is the most prolific writer in the New Testament and readings from his letters are heard most Sundays in the second reading.

We can enjoy the days of summer when there is a little more time and space and let Paul come into our space and allow our space to be filled with the words of Paul. Each of us can learn more and we can spend more time with the readings from the New Testament. All in all not a bad way to spend the summer.

Let’s continue the conversation [email protected]

Peace, Patrick
