    Q. I see that on August 15, the Catholic Church celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. What is the Church’s teaching behind this feast day.

    A. Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay—a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifi es the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation. Other names for this feast day are: The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; The Assumption of Mary Into Heaven; The Dormition of the Theotokos; The Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Feast of the Assumption is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.Eastern Christians, both Catholic and Orthodox, continue to refer to the Feast of the Assumption as the Dormition of the Theotokos today. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defi ned dogma of the Catholic Church. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, exercising papal infallibility, declared in Munifi centissimus Deus that it is a dogma of the Church "that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." As a dogma, the Assumption is a required belief of all Catholics; anyone who publicly dissents from the dogma, Pope Pius declared, "has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith." While Eastern Christians have kept these early tradition surrounding the Assumption alive, Western Christians have largely lost touch with them. Some, hearing the Assumption described by the Eastern term dormition, incorrectly assume that the "falling asleep" means that Mary was assumed into Heaven before she could die. But Pope Pius XII, cites ancient liturgical texts from both East and West, as well as the writings of the Church Fathers, all indicating that the

Blessed Virgin had died before her body was assumed into Heaven. “This feast shows, not only that the dead body of the Blessed Virgin Mary remained incorrupt, but that she gained a triumph out of death, her heavenly glorifi cation after the example of her only begotten Son, Jesus Christ . . .” Pope Pius XII, in the text explaining his defi nition of the dogma of the Assumption, refers repeatedly to the Blessed Virgin's death before her Assumption, and the consistent tradition in both the East and the West holds that Mary did die before she was assumed into Heaven. However, since the defi nition of the Assumption is silent on this question, Catholics can legitimately believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption.

Our Lady of the Assumption Prayer

Mary, Queen assumed into heaven, I rejoice that after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in heaven by the Holy Trinity.

Lift my heart with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach me how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven. Make me realize that death is the triumphant gate through which I shall pass to your Son, and that someday my body shall rejoin my soul in the unending bliss of heaven.

From this earth, over which I tread as a pilgrim, I look to you for help. I ask for this favor: (Mention your request).

When my hour of death has come, lead me safely to the presence of Jesus to enjoy the vision of my God for all eternity together with you.

    12TH WEEK OF PENTECOST

The Maritime WorldWe pray for all those who work and

live from the sea, among them sailors, fi shermen and their families.

    “The promotion of the practice

    of stewardship is important for

the mission of the Church and for

    the spiritual well-being of each

    individual Christian. Everyone benefits from

the sacrificial gift one makes of his time, talent

    and treasure.”

Romans 12:9-15 - Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affl iction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Luke 1:42-55 - In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfi ll his promises to her!” And Mary said: “My soul glorifi es the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has fi lled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be mercifu to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

Dear Jesus, here I am back at school, not only ready to learn new subjects but to grow in my love for You. • Pope Francis: “Let us pray for the victims, for their families; and let us pray for Lebanon so that it might

face this extremely tragic and painful moment and, with the help of the international community, overcome the

    grave crisis they are experiencing.”

AFTER a massive fi re triggered a deadly explosion in Beirut, Pope Francis called for prayers and a united effort to help Lebanon overcome “this serious crisis”.”

“Let us pray for the victims and their family members, and let us pray for Lebanon so that with the effort of everyone in society – political and religious – it may face this

tragic and painful moment and, with the help of the international community, overcome the serious crisis it is experiencing,”

the Pope said at the end of his general audience on August 5.

The morning after a devastating explosion rocked the city’s port area August 4, at least 100 people were reported dead, more than 4000 others were injured, and more than

    100 people were missing.

Rescue workers continued to search for survivors under the rubble.Lebanese President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by thousands of tons of

ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse that had caught fi re.

The shock waves from the explosion fl attened nearby structures, shattered glass and shook buildings throughout the city in the tiny Mediterranean nation already devastated

by the coronavirus and its worst fi nancial crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.

A recent report by the UN World Food Program said almost 50% of Lebanese citizens – along with 63 per cent of Palestinian refugees and 75 per cent of Syrian refugees in

the country — were worried they could fi nd enough food.
