From the EditorTROUBLED TIMES – and something to think about

In Early Britain I expect that there were marauding clans whofought to gain this hilltop fort and laid waste to the landaround it. Later, as a successful wool town, Stow would haveattracted those who lived by exploiting or destroying others fortheir own betterment, from Romans to Roundheads andCavaliers. Now, in our modern history, Stow is besieged oncemore, circled by ‘predatory’ developers – I use the word withcaution, but it can feel that way.

There are plans already lodged or expected for no less than sixnew developments, just in Stow – there are more in Bourton,Moreton, and spreading to many other communities in theCotswolds like a plague – and the developers all want to buildover the Cotswold A.O.N.B. which, as we know, is protected byLaw against development! Stow’s own plans for the futureestimate that 27 affordable homes are needed in the next tenyears, and we really will need them. I don’t think we need over200 homes selling at figures approaching twenty or thirtytimes the average salary in Stow - do we? We need to replaceAshton House and we need a bigger, better surgery for ourdoctors – do we need 2 fifty-bed care homes, and 100 oddretirement apartments? I don’t think so.

Anyway, here’s ‘a baker’s dozen’ of events pages filled withcheerier things to think about. I can’t promise summerweather but I can guarantee you every opportunity to enjoy agood time in our towns and villages this summer. There aresome truly amazing concerts, festivals, celebrations, marketsand fairs. But before you rush off, take this thought with you – if you hada gift or received a grant of a large sum of money, which had tobe spent for the benefit of Stow people, what would you spentit on? Do let me know.

Best wishes, Jenni TurnerEditor

This month’s edition is huge, with a widely varied selection of articles and

information. Helping sort out the content were Christabel Hardacre who

produced the events pages and Jan Marley who edits and produces the

Schools pages and Church diaries, with some new contributors – Nigel Moor,

Richard Price (actually a returning contributor) and Sue Brawn – all very

different, and all worth reading. Huge thanks to them all, and to our volunteer

deliverers who get out around the town and villages putting magazines

through letterboxes. It’s great teamwork!

A total of just over £1600 has been raised in aid of

Children’s Brain Tumour Research.

Staff and friends from Riverside Dental Practice completed an 18

mile sponsored walk and cycle ride from Bourton-on-the-Water to

Cirencester. A quiz sheet was also sold at the practice with a prize of

an Oral-B electric toothbrush.

Philippa Floyd associate dentist at Riverside said, “Less than 1% of

money raised for cancer research goes towards Brain Tumour

research and it is the biggest cancer killer of the under 40’s. If we

keep ‘funding the fight’ then more children, like my 7 year old Henry,

will have a future .Thank-you to all our sponsors.

A campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of brain tumours in

children under 18 years has won a major national NHS Innovation

award for its work in improving early cancer diagnosis.

In the financial year to March 13 we provided approx 4,300 hours of

uncharged nursing for sixty local patients, a slight increase on the

previous year. Even with our extensive use of volunteers in the non-

clinical side of the charity, the total cost of this nursing was almost

£200,000. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of our supporters and

donors, including one very large local legacy, we met all that

expenditure from income in the year. Our costs this this year are

likely to be closer to £225,000, of which we expect to receive at most

£45,000 from NHS sources. So we ask for your continued support so

that we can continue to provide this much-needed service to local

patients and their families. For information on our fundraising

Can you believe it? Halfway through the year & so far we’ve had little to cheer. Theeconomic outlook is looking a little better but we’ve still a long way to go before we all feelconfident that, indeed, things are on the up. Whatever the state of the economy you stillhave to pay your tax, unless you’re one of those conglomerates who somehow manage toavoid paying it.

“We’ve got plenty of time haven’t we”? These words are normally spoken by those whofinally make it through the door in January, more often than not the same clients who bringin a Tesco bag full of receipts & suggest that they’ve made a bit of an effort to get theirbooks in order this year! Every client is different but the one thing for all is that Tax Returnshave to be filed & tax paid by the end of the January following the end of the tax year. That’s plenty of time for most but a fair few are continually late & that’s why Revenue &Customs are coming down hard on the continual late filers & payers. Don’t be caught out, start to get your paperwork in order now & aim to get your Return in as early as possible. At least that way you will know how much you will have to pay well in advance so can putsomething aside each month to pay your tax.

Many readers will be aware that many tax codes issued by HMRC are wrong & therefore itis wise to check these and query them as soon as possible. If you pay too little tax, becausea tax code issued by HMRC is incorrect, you are no longer able to argue that it is theirmistake & you may be required to pay any underpayment, interest or penalties immediately. If in doubt seek advice from your accountant or give me a ring for free, impartial advice. Iwill be happy to help in any way that I can.

Alcohol arrest scheme - cutting the link

between drink and crime

The Alcohol Arrest Referral Scheme (AARS) has received a grant ofjust under £60,000 from the Commissioner’s Fund, to continue its work across the County. The grantis for one year with the potential to extend it for a further three years. Police and CrimeCommissioner Martin Surl said, “The Alcohol Arrest Referral Scheme is a good example of how I wantorganisations across the county to work together to reduce crime. It will link directly withGloucestershire Probation Service; Road Safety; Turning Point & the Community Safety Partnershipsto improve reductions in drink-related offending and re-offending.

“In order to reduce crime we must tackle the causes of crime. The Alcohol Advice Referral Schemecan be an important step in breaking the cycle of drink and crime and that must be good not only forthe individual but for the rest of the community”.

This is not a soft option to prosecutionThe scheme works like this. Individuals arrested for an alcohol related offence are guided towards theAARS in one of three ways: as a condition of bail; if the offence merits a fixed penalty notice only, orthrough workers going to the cells and talking to offenders in custody.

Offenders’ drinking habits are assessed to identify links between behaviour and crimes committed. The assessment also looks at health, housing, social networks and finances - offenders are expectedto have had at least two appointments before they appear in court.

In recent cases, a woman had drunk the equivalent of more than five bottles of wine when she wasarrested for drink driving. A man, who was drinking more than 10 bottles a week, was arrested whenhe was caught behind the wheel. Both are now receiving treatment and are at the beginning of a longroad to recovery.

Peter Steel, Chief Executive of the Independence Trust which manages the AARS said, “The support ofthe Police and Crime Commissioner is essential as we develop the scheme. This local project engageswith people at a time when we can make a difference to their drinking and offending. That is goodfor the individual, their families and the communities of Gloucestershire. It will make a difference”.

A third of the UKs adults will suffer with back pain during

their lifetime. Some of you will be included in this

statistic and might already struggle with everyday tasks

such as picking up a child, standing for a prolonged

period of time, or looking in the blind spot whilst driving.

What can you do?Rest and limiting your movements to within a comfortable range is

only natural – it won’t hurt for a little while, but in the long term, this

can add to your Back Pain.

Physical exercise, including appropriate core training and

strengthening programs, have been shown to reduce back pain. A

strong core or torso can be developed with a range of exercises

including the well known “plank” and its variations.

I don’t have Back Pain...You may not currently have back pain but chances are you may well

develop it later. Some simple exercises can identify if you are likely to

develop some issues. Grab a brush handle and hold it over your head,

feet shoulder width apart, now squat as low as you can. Do your

thighs get parallel? Is the stick still over your heels? If not come for a

movement assessment with our team of trainers. We can help in

Back pain prevention and management with core strengthening and

training techniques.

WEIGHT TRAINING IN YOUTH

ATHLETES:

COMMON MYTHS UNCOVERED

Weight Training Stunts Growth

Someone noticed Olympic weightlifters were small in stature - was

this because weightlifting stunted their growth? Or is it because they

had to move a very heavy load the shortest distance (a taller lifter

needs to use the strength for longer to finish the lift). The latter is

more likely. THE FACT IS more smaller lifters were more successful than

the taller lifters.

Weight Training makes girls unfeminine

Let me cite a few professional sportswomen who have definitely got

femininity - Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton & Laura Trot, to name but

a few. Weight training only makes you muscular IF you train to get

muscular. Lifting a heavy weight for 3 sets of 5 repetitions in a session

will not make you incredibly muscular - it will allow for improvements

in sporting performance through increased speed, strength and

power.

do to get better, or on sports nutrition, forward your questions to Ross

Colts by 2 points.

Congratulations to our U16 squad and manager Garry Coleman who

have won the sportsmanship award for their age group in the

Cheltenham Youth Football League this season.

Moreton-in-Marsh Bowls ClubFrom Mike Wainwright

Life Membership AwardThe Management Committee are delighted to present Beryl and Ted

Fletcher with a life membership of the Bowls Club.

Ted and Beryl Fletcher joined the Club 30 years ago, when the

clubhouse was little more than a medium-sized shed with about 30

members. With other determined members they helped to rebuild

the former clubhouse at Hospital Road, where membership grew

steadily.

Starting as a beginner, Ted now holds the record for having competed

on Finals Day in 19 consecutive seasons, failing only once to claim a

win, and achieving multiple victories. He was a much respected

Captain of the Club on two occasions. Beryl had determined not to

set foot on the green but weakened when Ted bought her a set of

four woods, quickly developing her game. The both enjoyed playing

indoor and outdoor bowls 52 weeks of the year!

Beryl also achieved successes in Club

competitions and many times they both

played in County Competitions, joining tour

parties to Wales, Lincoln, Devon, Dorset,

Sussex and Scotland.

Ted and Beryl commissioned the wooden

“Fletcher Trophy” for the Men`s 2-wood

competition. Fed up with polishing multiple

trophies Beryl insisted that the new trophy

should be made of wood, so that it would only need to be dusted!

Beryl no longer plays but Ted is occasionally seen on the green and

he plays indoor mat. They are a much loved couple, both committed

supporters of the new Club and still very much involved - and always

happy to pass on advice and encouragement to all members.
