School year in review2017 was a jam packed year for St Kevin’s.

Please find a snap shot of the programs and activities from this year. Our staff provided so many opportunities to extend our childrens’ learning that unfortunately not all of the activities could be represented in The Tribute.

We congratulate every child, staff member and supporting family on another very successful year.

Enjoy our “Tribute”... SAB

Patrick M tries so hard with all his work and is improving enormously because he never

gives up and works hard at staying focussed on his

learning. Mrs Chapman

The Three Rs at St Kevin’s This year the three Rs at St Kevin’s took on a slightly different meaning. We undertook, very successfully, our four yearly REVIEW and received a glowing report from our reviewer which has set up our focus for the next four years. We undertook a $1.8 million dollar REFURBISHMENT which has been very exciting and has modernised our school and made it such a wonderful environment to learn in.

I was blessed with 4 weeks of REFLECTION time when I embarked on a Principal Faith Formation Program in County Laoise in Ireland where I shared experiences and stories with others from Australia and overseas, listened to some amazingly forward thinking leaders of our church and stretched my mind in so many different ways after hearing the wonderful speakers who presented over the four week course. St Kevin’s welcome BBQ

Our St Kevins Welcome BBQ was yet again a great success.

There was a buzz of excitement, with our “old” families

reconnecting after the summer break and new families being

welcomed to the St Kevin’s family. We thank the teachers for

preparing dinner for us, it’s always nice to have a night off

from cooking and for organising the night and providing the

opportunity to meet together as one community group.

It was a really lovely start to the year.

School fundraiser St Kevin’s PFA worked tirelessly in organising a very successful major fundraising event, the School Disco.

Fun, frivolity and of course fund raising was prolific that night. Silent auctions, canvas auctions and lots of entertaining stalls and dancing helped to produce a very eventful evening. We wish to thank all of those who assisted in the organisation and the companies who donated either time or goods.

Buddy nightOur 2017 Buddy Night was yet again filled with fun, laughter and good community spirit where we welcome families new to St Kevin’s. The night involved eating and drinking together. The kids had great fun and the quizzing games with the adults got families involved and made to feel a part of our school community in a great way.

Thanks to Elena Bertuna and Tracey Farfalla for their organisation for this event.

When it comes to having courage in the classroom, Maeve, Jasmine and

Ena Coco have got it in the bag. They are never afraid to put their hand

up and ask a question to clarify their understanding or ask for help when they need it, in front of all their

peers. What great examples of courageous learners they are.

In term two the junior students

were involved in a 10 week tennis

program. The coaches Jonathan

and Jason were funny and they

used to call the students by

very memorable and funny

names. For example, Haircut 100,

Macaroni and numerous famous

basketballers.

It was terrific seeing both schools of St Kevin’s Parish come together and spend a day enjoying great, uplifting music and dance!

The day was filled with laughter and students collaborating together to show respect and unity as a community of schools within the parish.

Well done to St Charles for their hospitality and thank you St Kevin’s for being part of a

spirit filled day.

On the last day of term one, we attended the church to participate in an Easter service. The juniors processioned

in to the church with branches which were placed behind the altar. Afterwards, we celebrated mass before going to the

stadium to have our Easter assembly where we very excitedly awaited the

winners of the Easter raffle.

Yes, it came again, that great event that brings our school community together in celebration of the learning and fun students have gained from their Inquiry unit!

This year the Middle Grades had joined with the Senior Grades to race those magnificent, human powered machines.

Young student leaders from primary schools across Victoria descended on Phillip Island for environmental leadership workshops as part of the Kids Teaching Kids program at the Penguin Parade Centre - Summerlands.

Students conducted presentations on first hand experiences and knowledge of what they had learnt from implementing their environmental action.

It was terrific to see Ty and Sanjeev the school’s Sustainability Captains and Gabi and Jamie our School Captains so enthusiastic and confident when teaching others about environmental issues around our school.

FIRE Carrier CommissioningIn March our four 2017 FIRE Carrier leaders – Olivia, Connor, Mieke and Henry were commissioned. It was a beautiful FIRE ceremony. Each student received a badge and certificate once commissioned.

Being commissioned as a FIRE Carrier is to exercise an important role in our school community. These students share a passion for learning about Aboriginal culture and history and are committed to sharing this knowledge and promoting reconciliation within and beyond the school community.

The Fire Carriers attended a retreat day during the year with Fire Carriers from other schools and organised our very own Long Walk with the children from St Charles.

What an action packed event it was! There was a great

flood that almost engulfed our carpark. There was a

bbq with lots of soggy people eating and having a laugh. The police even dropped in with a radar

gun - the fastest billy cart clocking a

whopping speed of 22km/hr!

Ned & Alexander, our leaders, were kept very busy encouraging our community to raise funds, awareness or items for various organisations. Term One focus - to support Caritas Australia. We sold snow cones, had a cake and bake stall, guess the lollies in the jar and a colour me free day, all of which were a huge success and were heaps of fun. Term Two focus - to support St Vincent de Paul. Our blanket and sock drive was another HUGE success, collecting

61 blankets/doonas and 309 pairs of socks. And we even made it in the local newspaper!Term Three focus - to support Manuel Duato, our sister school in Peru. We organised ‘Donuts for Duato.’ Another HUGE success selling 72 dozen donuts and again made it in the local paper.

Term Four focus - to support the Bethlehem Appeal. We asked families to purchase gifts for those people less fortunate and who don’t receive gifts at Christmas. This task enabled families to choose a gift together. It’s great knowing that your gift will be going to someone in need at Christmas.

On Thursday 21st September the Middle Level students enjoyed a fun sleepover in the Junior building. The students were engaged in many fun and exciting games throughout the evening.

They also watched the Emoji Movie whilst enjoying some yummy, buttery popcorn. We had so much fun!!

Soccer - Soccer was one of our Winter Sports. Our team made it to Semi Finals. By the end of the competition we played really well together and we were more confident.

Rounders - Winners were grinners. We outdid ourselves with our skills and our awesome batting ability.

Netball - Our two mixed netball teams played very well displaying their ball skills and various shooting styles. Our A team only lost one game.

Basketball - Basketball was one of our Summer Sports. Great fun was had.

FUTSAL The girls were lucky enough to all get in, and most of the boys. We played in a one day tournament, and the boys were invited to go to another tournament during the holidays.

CROSS COUNTRY Many of the seniors participated in the district event. We were amazed at our results as a number of students made it to the next level. What a great effort!

ATHLETiCS This year we took a large number of students including Year 4’s, to Interschool Athletics. Once again, some of the students made it through to the next round. For a small school we are proud of the way in which we are able to compete with larger schools.

GIRLS FOOTBALL For the first time St Kevin’s and St Charles played together as a team in the Girl’s Football Competition. We went to St Charles and practised some footy skills with the other students and Mr Puls. We played four games against other schools which highlighted our kicking and marking skills.

Keeping fit in the seniors

it’s a busy time in the Seniors, with many different sporting opportunities popping up. We can mention a few…

It was a week full of fun and excitement. We spent 5 days exploring Canberra together. We visited Telstra tower to see city night views, Parliament House, The High Court, where we re-enacted a court case.

My highlights were Questacon Science Museum and The War Memorial. The last post was very special.
