Feast of Faith

Postures of the Mass In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the read-ings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is an-other posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucha-rist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LENT has begun… STATIONS OF THE CROSS (English) FRIDAYS: 6:30 PM, February 19 – March 26, 2021 ESTACIONES DE LA CRUZ (Español) TUESDAYS: 7:00 PM después de la adoración

Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, abnega-tion. This week we will say a few words about abnegation. We often look for reasons to believe in our faith, especially when it is challenged by others, or it challenges us, or when it is put into question by our personal life experiences or doubts. Sometimes, like the Apostle Thomas, we will look for a sign, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” At other times, like Nicodemus, we will refuse to believe until it is made understandable to us, “How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?” Some demand signs, while others look for wisdom, but as St. Paul reminds us, “we proclaim Christ crucified, a stum-bling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” The crucified Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, not its opposite. Might this also be said of the crucified faith, the crucified Church, the crucified Christian? Lent is an opportunity for us to ponder the truth of St. Paul’s divine-ly inspired words; words that obviously made sense to him in a very personal way, seen against the backdrop of his life. This is a very important exercise for every Christian to do: contemplate the role of one’s personal suffering, “crucifixion” so to speak, as the power and wisdom of God. Only then will abnegation make any sense to us, only then will we accept our need to practice it, only then that we might even see it as a sign from God that He is truly with us.

Reading 1: Ex 20:1-17 In those days, God delivered all these commandments: “I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain. “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him.” Responsorial Psalm: R. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. R. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. R. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. R. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. R. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.

Reading 2: 1 Cor 1:22-25 Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Gospel: Jn 2:13-25 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.

Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios . .

No matarás. No cometerás adulterio. No robarás.

Lent by Kay Gotter

ASH WEDNESDAY: Jesus came into the world to heal our brokenness. Through His Death and Resurrection, He conquered sin and death. All four Gospels tell us of Jesus’ Passion, and so most of the signs and symbols that help us understand this central mystery of our faith have origins in their witness. Ashes mark the beginning of Lent. They’re a sign of our own sorrow for sin for what-ever is standing between us and Easter joy. On Ash Wednesday we come together to pray, admit our sin and express sorrow for turning away from God. The ashes we receive on our heads are a sign of that repentance. The ashes are usually burned from the previous year’s palms from Palm Sunday. When we receive the ashes, we hear one of two phrases “Remember, that you are dust and to dust you shall return” or “Repent, and believe in the gospel”. These ashes are a sign that we are willing to burn away all the selfishness and pride and let Gd’s love grow in our hearts in their place. They are a sign, too, of the short-ness of life on earth and a reminder to set our hearts on life with God, forever.

CROSS AND CRUCIFIXION: Jesus preached and healed people and demonstrated what true love does and says. And just as the prophets and Jesus predicted, He suffered. Religious authorities condemned Him for blasphemy. Roman authorities accused Him of rebellion, so He was executed under Roman law. Crucifixion was such a horrible punishment that it was not used on Roman citizens. The Romans reserved it for those who they thought were the worst criminals. The convicted carried part of the cross to the public place of execution. They were tied and nailed to the cross and left to die a long, painful death. In images of the Crucifixion, we see Jesus on the cross on a hill outside Jerusalem’s walls; it was called Golgotha which means “place of the skull”. We also call it Calvary, from the Latin, calva, which means “skull”. All four Gospels tell us of Jesus’ crucifixion. INSTRUMENTS OF THE PASSION: Symbols help Christians draw close to Jesus. We know Jesus’ love from His suffering and death, and symbols of His Passion help us focus on that love. COINS: remind us of Judas’ betrayal.

CROWN OF THORNS: is what the Roman soldiers put on Jesus’ head to mock Him for claiming the role of king. PILLAR: a symbol of Jesus’ scourging or whipping SPEAR: was used to pierce Jesus’ side, from which blood and water flowed. SPONGE on the end of a spear: Jesus said He was thirsty and someone soaked a sponge with sour wine and offered it to Him. DICE: soldiers gambled for Jesus’ clothes

INRI: When Jesus hung on the Cross, the Roman authorities nailed a sign above Him. That sign read, in Latin, “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.” It was written in Hebrew and Greek as well. The abbreviation for the Latin words is INRI, which is why we see this written at the top of many crucifixes. But why an I instead of a J? The letter J did not exist until the fourteenth century in English. VEIL OF VERONICA: Jesus had to carry His cross through Jerusalem on the way to be crucified. One story tells us about a woman who wiped Jesus’ sweaty, bloody face with her veil. When she took the cloth away, the image of Je-sus’ face remained there, a “true image” or vera icona in Latin. That woman came to be known as Veronica.
