Though earth was bare, One more seed is planted there: Give up your strength the seed to nourish, That in course the flower may flourish. People, look east and sing today: Love, the rose, is on the way. The St. Lucas Garden is full! As June trickles into July, the strawberries are nearly done and the raspberries are offering a few red juicy berries with more to come! There are ten varieties of tomatoes planted, four different peppers, peas, beans (green and yellow wax) carrots, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, okra, eggplant and beets! The herb bed is hosting parsley, chives, spearmint, thyme, and oregano. We have a bed full of dill, and there’s basil in several beds as a companion plant to our toma- toes. One bed has been devoted to a Big Max Pumpkin Vine. Come and watch Big Max grow! Our milkweed has taken over one end of the flower bed and is regularly visited by Monarchs. Our dill plants are feeding caterpillars that will be- come beautiful Black Swallowtail butterflies, while our lightweight row cover is frustrating the white Cabbage butterflies whose Cabbage worms turned our cabbages into lace last season. Our new water tap for the garden should be installed by the time you read this!! We’ve been promised installation by Friday. We will no longer have cars running across our hose stretched over Walbridge as we water the plants. A BIG Gardener Thank You to Serena and Stefan from Cin- dy’s Corner, Sue and Keith Wendt, and of course, Randy Hyter for planting, weeding, and other garden help this week. Our garden is fully planted, but you can still experience the joys of gardening. There’s always something to do.
