Fr. Tony Davis, PastorSr. Marie Shields, SNDdeN, Pastoral Associate
St. Matthias Columbus1582 Ferris Rd., Columbus, OH 43224
5th Sunday of Ordinary Time ____ February 10, 2019
St. Matthias Church, 1582 Ferris Road, Columbus OH 43224 1
Parish Office PASTORAL POST
Written by Fr. Tony
In 1992, Pope John Paul II instituted an annual ‘World Day of the Sick,’ a day in
which we pray for all those who are ill. He cleverly decided to celebrate it
every year on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Lourdes, France
was the location of the 1858 Marian apparition to St. Bernadette Soubirous.
Part of that apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary involved the uncovering of a
spring of water. To this day, the sick still come from all over the world to bathe
in these healing waters.
The World Day of the Sick and the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes occur this
year on Monday, February 11. St. Matthias will honor this day by hosting a
special Mass at Noon. During this Mass, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick will be offered to those who are ill or elderly. Please consider bringing
your aging loved ones to this Mass. I’m sure many of them who can no longer
make it to Mass on a normal basis would love the opportunity ‘to come home’
to St. Matthias Church. Maybe take them to lunch, too, and make a day of it! I
would also encourage those who struggle with mental illnesses or deeply
ingrained addictions to consider coming and receiving the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick as well. Anointing of the Sick is no longer seen as just a
sacrament for the dying. It is a sacrament of healing for the living, too.
In his letter for the 2019 World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis says that caring
for the sick – like the Good Samaritan – is the “most credible means of
evangelization.” He continues, “caring for the sick requires professionalism,
tenderness, straightforward and simple gestures freely given, like a caress that
makes others feel loved.” How true this is! Of all the different aspects of
illnesses – the suffering, the unknown, treatments, and medications – the
most important part is to let those who are sick know that they are loved.
At St. Matthias, our boundaries extend to all the nursing homes, assisted living
facilities, hospitals, doctors' offices, and places our sick and elderly
parishioners find themselves in. Like the Good Samaritan, let us help them
come together on February 11th in prayer and solidarity. Our 8th grade St.
Matthias School students will also be present to assist any of our guests. There
will be no 8:30 AM Communion Service that day.
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for
us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)
Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I
send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, to give a friendly
smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly
provides opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you hear God
calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

WINTER WEATHER
With Fr. Tony in residence, Masses will not be canceled due to snow, ice,
or temperature. Priests can say Mass alone and honor the Mass intention
for that day. It is highly advisable, however, that you use caution and your
best judgment on coming to Mass during these winter months. God
understands if weather prevents us from coming to Church. Please use
the opportunity to pray on your own from home.
