The Pastor’s Corner
Most of us enjoy looking at old family
photos and reminiscing about our
parents, siblings, and friends. These
photos take us back to another time and
place. Our reactions range from quiet smiles to plentiful
tears. They serve as a conduit to our past; hopefully, with
sentiments of love, gratitude and examples of faith.
Today's second reading is the earliest teachings on the
Eucharist in the New Testament (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Paul
recalls what he himself heard about this gift to us of this
most holy Presence of the Lord, Himself. This mystery of
our Eucharistic unity provides so much to contemplate in
our daily lives.
Do we approach the Sacrament with devotion and genuine
respect? It is not "just some special bread" but the Real
Presence of the Risen Christ. If our living does not permit
us to receive worthily the Holy Eucharist, we should
respectfully go to Confession, and only then approach the
Sacrament. All of us need to be "right with God, neighbor,
and self" as we humbly come forward at communion.
The “Bread of Life Discourse,” Chapter 6:22-59, provides
the meaning of worthily participating in the Eucharist.
Jesus is our food for the journey, the bread that ever
nourishes the soul unto eternal life. The Galilee town
known as Tabgha is where the Church commemorates this
miracle. It was in Capernaum, after Jesus walked on the
water, that the actual teaching was given. Both are very
popular pilgrim sites in the Holy Land to this day.
On a human level, remember to be mindful of our weekly
collection for the Bread of Life Pantry, a joint ecumenical
effort to feed the hungry in our midst. If everyone brought
just one (1) nonperishable item to Church each week, our
brothers and sisters in need will be fed through our
concern. Continue to be thoughtful and respond to the
needs of others over the summer.
Speaking of the food pantry, the parish extends its grateful
thanks to Cheryl Frazier and Lynn Botelho who have
worked with the volunteers for nine years. We thank
Paula Burke and Pam Costigan, who have been so gracious
to assist at the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Our ecumenical
efforts provide food for 200 families per week. Thank you
to our parish volunteers and to all who donate food every
week to help feed our brothers and sisters.
Summer finally arrived…pheww!
~Msgr. Darcy
