2018 Annual Collection for the Senior Priest Retirement Fund Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence
Sr. Priest Retirement Fund. After decades of faithful service, many retired priests continue to serve where they are
needed, while others require assisted living, or nursing home care. Since priests are paid a very modest wage, they cannot
rely upon Social Security to make ends meet. No longer able to rely upon parishes for basic living needs, senior priests
depend on support from this challenged fund. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of many who have
served faithfully for many years in ministry – some of whom continue to serve well after their ‘retirement.’ The collection
is also our way of saying “thank you” for that service. At Masses on September 8-9 we welcome Fr. Robert Hawkins,
newly retired who will preach that weekend. To learn how this fund benefits senior priests or to make an online donation,
please visit www.srpriestri.org. Thank you for your support of this worthy endeavor. Our parish participation will be the
following weekend September 15-16.
An important pastoral event will be
celebrated on Saturday, September 15th at
11:00 a.m. with the Mass of Healing for our
sick and elderly parishioners. You are invited
to bring your parents, children, neighbors or
friends who are infirmed to receive the Sacrament of the
Sick within the celebration of Mass. A reception is planned
in the Community Room immediately following the Mass.
St. Margaret Choir
Choir rehearsals will begin on Wednesday,
September 5th at 7:00PM. Choir offers an
opportunity to enjoy friendships and praise the
Lord through song. You are encouraged to
join us! The choir will resume singing at the
10:00AM Mass each Sunday beginning
September 9th.

The Pastor’s Corner
The unofficial end of summer is here with younger
students returning to their respective schools. Smiles are on
the faces of many parents! It’s good for us to return to a
regular schedule. The often used line, “Oh, we should get
together this summer!” many times goes unfulfilled…and so
it goes.
St. Margaret School has 150 students this year. The
student number is a challenge for us and many other Catholic
elementary and private schools. The overall State
demographic number of children is down, but costs and
benefits go up annually. The conditions presented in public
education is not exempt either, especially as we read about
wet, cold, and dilapidated public school facilities.
Our pivot to a “blended learning model” (with
a purposeful use of technology as a curriculum tool with
more personal attention and small group interaction) is our
emerging teaching model of choice. The dedicated efforts of
our Principal and faculty/staff have always produced
students well prepared for life and high school.
S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art,
Math) is one educational component being implemented in
schools. We are working to strengthen our own program,
and, combined with proven classical education both
components are guided by a Catholic human formation
received at St. Margaret’s. If you desire to strengthen the mission
of the school with a major gift specifically for education programing
enhancements, please contact me privately. I would very much
entertain such a conversation!
In union of prayer, ~Monsignor Darcy
The headwinds against Church leadership will surely
and necessarily increase. The Bishop invites us to
participate in a day of penitence on Friday, September 14.
The Church will be open for Eucharistic Adoration from 9 AM
to 12 noon. Please consider coming to intercede for the healing
of victims; repentance in all our lives; and action to
discipline the hierarchy wherever necessary. As I
mentioned last week, none of us (you or me!) should leave
the Church on account of our hurt, anger, and disgust…
we’re all dedicated and staying to lead the Church;
supporting our parishes, our families, and all our great
priests. Pray also for me that I not get discouraged after
these 39 years of priestly ministry.
