Fr. Ted Vitali, C.P. Ordination to the Priesthood ~ May 30, 1969

Sixth Sunday of Easter May 26, 2019 On this holiday weekend, in addition to thoughts of joy that another school year has come to a successful conclusion and thoughts of gratitude for all who gave their lives for this country’s freedom my mind focuses on the Priesthood. Yesterday was a wonderful day in our Archdiocese as seven men were ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Carlson. (One of them, the now - Fr. Patrick Russell, was assigned to St. Mark’s three years ago. You may remember him as the bespectacled seminarian constantly at Msgr. Forst’s side during Mass as Monsignor finished his time here).

It is a blessing for us to have these new priests ready for service and, God willing, they will minister to the faithful for many decades. Imagine, some of them may still be shepherding the flock in 2079! In last week’s St. Louis Review our new priests were quoted on their thoughts about their calling. I liked what the new Fr. Samuel Inameti said: “the only thing that gives me joy in this world is to see my brothers and sisters outside the Church coming back, not as strangers, but as children returning to their Father’s house. To use the words of (former trafficking victim) Widdie Lazenko, ‘I know what it is like to be out there.’ This is because I was once out there, that is, as a convert to Catholicism. It is a beautiful witness daily, our Lord’s desire being fulfilled through mere earthen vessels. It is humbling to be invited to participate in our Lord’s redemptive mission. For me, all that matters on the part of the one being called to serve his fellow brothers and sisters, is to remain an instrument of peace, joy, hope and love in the hands of our dearest Lord, who is ever ready and willing to work His purpose in our life each day.” Please pray for our new priests as our dear Lord sends them to places they had no idea they would ever go, to serve in ways they never expected. Our Lord is very good at surprising those who place themselves at His service. For proof of that, ask Fr. Theodore Vitali, C.P. When Father was ordained 50 years ago I’m sure he would have thought you crazy if you told him he would serve nearly all his priesthood in St. Louis. “Saint where?” he might have asked. Yet, here is the vineyard where God put him to work and today we thank God for that choice. Some of you have known Fr. Ted since 1971. I’ve known him since 1998, others met him at the time of the merger in 2003. No matter when we met, Father has left his mark upon us and has displayed his deep faith and fiery commitment to Jesus Christ. We are blessed because of it and I praise and thank God for choosing Father to service as His priest. I know you join with me. The new Fr. Inameti is right: “It is humbling to be invited to participate in our Lord’s redemptive mission.” The old Fr. Vitali shows us how rewarding that participation can be. It’s not just priests, of course, who are chosen for the mission of the Lord. All of you are. I pray that each one of you possesses still the enthusiasm of a young priest and the satisfaction of an old one. Through each of our vocations may Jesus Christ be praised. Alleluia!

May God Bless all of you. ~~ Fr. Hambrough

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord's Day among our ancestors in the faith was The Eighth Day, meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy.

These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year:

forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That's why it is still Easter! -James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Come join fellow parishioners on Thursday, June 6 at 8 am to help remove Easter displays from the Church and Cafeteria as we prepare for Pentecost Sunday and the

Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time.

Vincentian Mission Appeal

Next weekend, June 8-9, Rev. Gary Mueller, C.M. will speak at all our Masses about the Kenya Mission of the Vincentians. The Vincentians follow Jesus Christ, evangelizing the poor, in the Spirit of their founder, St. Vincent de Paul. In Kenya, the Vincentian Fathers and Brothers educate and form priests, run a woodworking program to train Kenyans with skills to support their families, and shepherd five parishes with 30 outstations bringing the sacraments to 30,000 people each week. They also help families and children with clean water, food, and medical care through several outreach centers. They are committed to bringing the Gospel to those in need.

Please note that tomorrow, Monday, May 27, we will follow our Civil Holiday Mass schedule, i.e., there will be only one Mass beginning at 9:00 am. Further, the Parish Office will be closed. Also, please note that beginning Monday, June 3, there will be only one Mass offered Monday-

Friday beginning at 7:30 am. This will be true until the end of June.

The Saturday morning Mass will continue to begin at 8:00. The Sunday Mass Schedule is unchanged.

Each talk will be followed by small group breakout sessions for attendees to share their own experiences related to the topics presented. The retreat will help veterans focus on their military experience and how God was with them and continues to be with them. It digs in to trauma created by PTSD and guilt and shame that can accompany military experience. We will also have worship services and quiet time for personal prayer and reflection. Attendees will each receive private accommodations at White House and all meals are provided. This retreat is open to men and women of any denomination who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The only cost to Veterans is a $25 deposit to register.
