For the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we hear Luke’s version of the story of the angel Gabriel’s
announcement to Mary about the birth of Jesus. Today’s gospel shifts our attention from
John the Baptist to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Both John and Mary serve as important figures
for our reflection during Advent; they are both instrumental in preparing the way for Jesus.
Today, as we reflect upon Mary’s example of faith and obedience to God, we must also be
receptive to receiving God’s plan for us. Most of us are familiar with the Annunciation story,
and it is fitting that we recall how God announced the birth of Jesus as we make our final preparations for our
celebration of the Incarnation on Christmas. As you know, the angel Gabriel visited Mary, a virgin betrothed
to a man named Joseph. Mary greeted the angel’s news with awe and wonder and asked how it could be
possible that she could give birth to a child. In his reply, the angel Gabriel announced the child to be born
would be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and would be God’s own Son. The angel reported to
Mary another miracle; her relative Elizabeth was also pregnant despite having been thought to be unable to
have a child. Mary’s response to the angel, which is called her fiat (saying yes), is an example of complete
faith and obedience to God.
Mary, already full of God’s grace, was able to cooperate in this great plan for our salvation. Thus, Jesus was
born as one of us, fully human and fully divine. This is the mystery we prepare to celebrate at Christmas, the
mystery of the Incarnation. Like Mary, we pray that we will be people of faith who recognize God’s saving
plan for us and are able respond with obedience in saying “yes” to God.
PS- As this is the last bulletin before Christmas, I want to wish all parishioners of St. Mark and Christ the King,
Riegelwood, a very Merry Christmas on behalf of myself and Fr. Ceasr and all the staff! May we all remember
that a newborn Savior was born unto us as the Messiah. Rejoice and sing as we give God thanks and praise!
Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam,
Fr. Greg

Mass Reminders & Update to COVID Policy We have been blessed to have had the opportunity to celebrate Mass in-person since May 17, 2020. Over
the course of seven months, we’ve learned to adapt to changes implemented by our local, national and dioc-
esan leaders. We at St. Mark are very appreciative of everyone who has and continues to adhere to the
safety regulations and protocols set in place by the Diocese of Raleigh and local government officials.
As we prepare to celebrate our Advent services, it remains important for us to follow these best practices and
think of our brothers and sisters in Christ during this difficult time. In Pope Francis’ latest op-ed in The New
York Times, the Holy Father wrote, “Looking to the common good is much more than the sum of what is
good for individuals. It means having a regard for all citizens and seeking to respond effectively to the
needs of the least fortunate.” Thank you for responding to that same call to love, respect and honor one
another, especially during this time of pandemic.
Best Practices for Attending and Participating in Mass
Masks are required to enter the church. Please wear your mask over your nose and mouth at all times.
RECENT UPDATE: If you cannot wear a mask for any reason, you will be seated in the chapel. We
ask that you come forward to the door to receive communion.
Ushers will show you to your seat at Mass. You will not be able to select your seat at this time.
Socialization and conversations with others can occur in the parking lot or sidewalk as long as mask-
wearing and social distancing are observed. Please avoid stopping and congregating at the entrance
doors of the church.
If you are feeling unwell or taking care of a family member who is sick, please take the necessary safety
precautions and stay at home.
Encourage family members and friends who cannot attend Mass in-person to watch our livestreams on
Facebook, the website or YouTube!
Thank you for your respectful cooperation!

Fourth Sunday of Advent Luke 1:26-38
Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then
the angel departed from me. (Luke 1:38)
Living the Word: Mary answered yes. How easy is it for us to say YES to God? We
still have a few days left in Advent to continue to prepare. Talk with your children
about how everyone is doing with getting closer to God during this season of prep-
aration. We are very close to Christmas. I know many of you have probably already
sent out Christmas cards. But how about having your children make Christmas
cards for family or friends in the neighborhood. Include messages of love and joy.
Questions of the Week:
Child: Is there something hard you need to do this week? What
might make it easier?
Adult: When have you followed the example of Mary and said, “Let
it be done to me as you say?”
Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: Do you know what one of the themes
of the 4th Sunday of Advent is? It’s ACCEPTANCE! Remember
when an angel came and told Mary that God would like her to be
the Mother of Jesus? Mary didn’t say, “I can’t talk to you right now”,
or “Maybe I will ---but why do I have to?” Mary just said YES. She
accepted the job she was given. She was ready to do whatever God
wanted her to do. Do you eve say, “Why”? “Wait a minute”......are
you ready to accept whatever job God wants you to do?

At Home with the Word This year, we have decided to recommend online resources in lieu of the “At Home with the Word” books. To prepare
your hearts, mind and soul for Advent, we suggest visiting USCCB’s website (usccb.org) for daily readings and podcasts,
Word on Fire with Bishop Robert Barron for daily Gospel reflections, and Dynamic Catholic for inspirational reflections.

Anointing of the Sick: Update on Pro-
tocols For Sick Calls in the Wilmington
Area
For New Hanover Regional Medical Center
(NHRMC):
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a new proto-
col in place for emergency calls for patients and in-
patients at NHRMC who desire to receive the Sacra-
ment of Anointing for the Sick. If you or your loved
one wants to receive the sacrament, the nurse should
be informed, or contact the pastoral care office at the
hospital and they in turn will get the medical clear-
ance in contacting Father Greg Anatuanya who will
follow all safety protocols before, during, and after
the visit. Fr. Greg is the only priest allowed into the
hospital for the purpose of administering the Sacra-
ment of the Sick at this time during the COVID re-
strictions.
Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center (formerly known
as Hospice Center):
If a loved one is an in-patient at the Lower Cape Fear
Life Care Center and requests a priest for the Sacra-
ment of Anointing, let a staff member at the Center
know, and they will make the arrangements, same as
above.
All other requests for anointing for parishioners at
home should be directed to their parish of their reg-
istration.
Christmas Letter from the Bishop Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama wrote a Christmas mes-
sage for the faithful of the Diocese of Raleigh. You

Year of St. Joseph On Dec. 8, Pope Francis has declared this to be the Year of
St. Joseph. Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a be-
loved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient fa-
ther, an accepting father; a father who is creatively coura-
geous, a working father, a father in the shadows. The Let-
ter Patris Corde (Latin for “With a Father’s Heart”) marks
the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration
of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. To cele-
brate the anniversary, Pope Francis has proclaimed a spe-
cial “Year of St Joseph,” beginning on the Solemnity of the
Immaculate Conception 2020 and extending to the same
feast in 2021. At the conclusion of his Letter, Pope Francis
adds a prayer to St Joseph, which he encourages all of us
to pray together: “Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only
Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became
man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and
guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and
courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.”

Archbishop Viganò, his Testimony, and how it impacted the investigation of former American Cardinal Theo-
dore McCarrick.
