Surprisingly, the church moved very slowly in claiming marriage as a focus of attention and care. Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, citizens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a traditional ceremony, it was home-based and optional. The ceremony was for showing the social status of the families involved (the procession ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father's control to her husband's. The "big moment" of the ceremony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride's donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household's gods. Christians found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family matter, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and sometimes recommended that the couple seek the advice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn't recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Christians followed the customs of the day, but they knew that custom and relationships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their baptism. Outwardly, Christians married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ's presence. —Rev. James Field, Copyright SD J S. CC

The digital world can be an environment rich in humanity;

a network not of wires but of people.),

—Pope Francis,

Message for the 48th World Communications Day

FAITH I, WORSHIP WITNESS

Digital media has become a part of our daily experience. We read news articles online, connect with friends on Facebook, and discuss current events on Twitter. Our lives are constantly shaped by communication through the Internet, radio, and print. However, Pope Francis has reminded us that "communication is ultimately a human rather than technological achievement." Through the Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC), we can "encounter others in the light of the Gospel" (Message for the 48th World Communications Day).

Married couples around the world face tremendous challenges and stand in great need of both encouragement and practical resources. The USCCB-sponsored website For Your Marriage (www.foryourmarriage.org) provides advice and witness stories to help couples at every stage of their journey, from dating to marriage and parenting. For National Marriage Week in February 2014, the website offered a seven-day virtual marriage retreat as a way for couples to enrich their marriage. Over 9,000 people visited the retreat page during the week, and each day close to 7,000 people visited For Your Marriage's homepage.

During the retreat, several couples who were separated due to military assignments overseas expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to deepen their relationship.

Thanks to funding from the CCC, the For Your Marriage website welcomes over 5,500 visitors every day. Because of the generosity of parishioners like you, couples will continue to receive the information and tools they need to strengthen their marriage and grow together in holiness.

The CCC allows us to share our experience of faith, worship, and witness with the world. Your generosity to this collection is a direct act of witness in itself, as you facilitate the communication of the gospel message. And remember, half of your donation stays in your (arch)diocese to support local communications projects.

Please visit www.usccb.org (search "Catholic Communication Campaign") to learn about how our ability to communicate the light of Christ is supported by the Collection for the CCC.
