Fourth Sunday of Advent December 20, 2020

Fourth Sunday of Advent This Sunday is often referred to in our holiday planning as the weekend before Christmas. That is how we think as we plan for our families, but the

Church’s Advent focus this Sunday is on the Blessed Virgin Mary. God never forces us to do his will. Mary must accept the invitation to be the mother of the Messiah in a way she does not fully understand. Her response to God through the angel Gabriel “I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say” begins the unfolding of our salvation. Throughout the centuries Mary’s prayer , the Magnificat, is at the center of Evening Prayer. I invite you to pray it on these days approaching Christmas and throughout the Christmas season.

My soul magnifies the Lord And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;

Because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid; For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me

blessed; Because He who is mighty has done great things for me,

and holy is His name; And His mercy is from generation to generation

on those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm,

He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones,

and has exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich He has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His

mercy Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his

posterity forever. Amen MERRY CHRISTMAS We often greet people, particularly fellow Christians, with this wish. This year we may hesitate because many traditions around the holiday season have changed in this very unique year. I continue to dec-

orate my house and send my cards, even if I am late. But I know I will miss spending time visiting all of you and my family this season. It will take some of the “Merry” out of this Christmas, but it cannot take “Christ” out of Christmas. The inner transformation of our thoughts and de-sires through the enduring presence of Christ is the core of a true “Merry Christmas”. God’s grace brought to us in Christ leads us toward peace and sacrificial love. May our choices and our actions follow the teaching of Christ to bring hope to our world. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas!

Fr. John

Thank You’s Thank you to the crew who set up the crèche and all who helped to decorate the churches for Advent and prepare for the Christmas season by cleaning and decorating. Thank you to generous individuals who have blessed our parishes with financial gifts and Harvest Fund contributions during the Advent season.

THE ETERNAL GOD King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35). Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26). Reflection “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” – Luke 1:28 After Jesus, we look to Mary as an ideal steward. Her entire life was lived in obedience to God’s call. Mary teaches us to live with joy for all we have been given. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, Mary reflects the light of Christ. Like Mary, we are called to reflect Christ’s light to the world through our gratitude and generosity.

St. John of Kanty - December 23 The people of Olkusz in Bohemia in 1431 had every reason to be suspicious of their new pastor. He was a Cracow professor who was being transferred to their small rural town, and once again their town was being used as a dumping ground for a priest who was "in disgrace." John had unjustly been kicked out of his university position. Rivals who resented his popularity with the students had brought false charge against him. He was not even allowed to appear at his own hearing or testify in his own defense. So at age 41, he was sent to be an apprentice pastor. Certainly no one would have blamed him if he was furious at such injustice. However, he was determined that his new parishioners would not suffer because of what had happened to him. There was no short stay or overnight miracle for him in Olkusz. He was nervous and afraid of his new responsibili-ties. And, despite the energy he put into his new job, the parish-ioners remained hostile to him. However, John's plan was very simple, and came not from the mind but from the heart. He let his genuine interest and concern for his people show in every-thing he did. He willingly gave his food to beggars near his home without asking questions. He worked for years without any sign of success, but he was very careful not to demonstrate impatience or anger. He knew that people could never be bullied into love, so he gave them what he hoped they would find in themselves. John had taught his students this philosophy again and again, "Fight all error, but do it with good humor, patience, kindness, and love. Harshness will damage your own soul and spoil the best cause." After eight years, he was exonerated and transferred back to Cracow. He had been so successful in the parish that the once-hostile people followed him several miles down the road, begging him to stay. For the rest of his life, he was professor of sacred Scripture at the university. He died on Dec. 24, 1473.

Celebrate Life

"By his incarnation the Son of God has united him-self in some fashion with every human be-ing" (Vatican II, GS 22). This saving event reveals

to humanity not only the boundless love of God who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son" (Jn 3:16), but also the incomparable value of every human person. The Church, faithfully contemplating the mystery of the Redemption, acknowledges this value with ever new wonder. She feels called to proclaim to the people of all times this "Gospel", the source of invincible hope and true joy for every period of his-tory. The Gospel of God's love for man, the Gospel of the dig-nity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indi-visible Gospel” (Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.2).
