St. Mary Catholic Church
20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Friends,
In the First Reading today from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, we hear the word of the Lord say, “Observe what is right, do what is just, for my salva-tion is about to come, my justice, about to be re-vealed.” These words seem especially appropriate for us during this pandemic. Not that this is “the world coming to an end.” Remember, even Jesus said that “only the Father knows for sure.” But this is a time to turn to the Lord for strength and peace, for healing and hope. Only Jesus can keep us safe and strong by following His will. We must trust in Him and know that He will always care for us, no matter what.
Many people are asking when we will resume Masses together. We still have heard nothing from the Gov-ernor nor from the County. So things are as they have been since July 15. Believe me, when we are able to meet again, we will, in whatever means and format we are allowed.
Until then, continue to pray. Pray for the faith and trust to believe in the Lord’s care for us. Pray for pro-tection and healing. Pray for all those who place themselves in harm’s way for our sakes. And pray for those who are working to provide us with a vaccine. May the wisdom of the Holy Spirit guide them and bring them success.
God bless you all. Father Fred

Hopefully, you have all been able to watch the video about our Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Pro-grams. We hope that you will consider signing your children up for one of our programs. Registration for Faith Formation and Youth Ministry began August 15. Please go to our parish website for the forms. Look on the Home Page. We are most grateful to the teens and adults who responded to the Flocknote message sent on Sunday, August 9, asking for volunteers. We really need the help to create a dynamic non-traditional program for our young people who will be “over-Zoomed” from just their school day. Just a reminder that most of us are working from home so email or response to Flocknote are the best ways to communicate. Our phones will soon forward to our email addresses like they did in the past. Thanks for your patience and understanding with this; we are working on it. We are aware that we still have not had all our 2019-2020 students receive their first communion. That will be the top priority when we can assemble for Mass again as a community or even with only family. Please continue to pray that this disease will get under control!

WHY PRAY?
The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them, are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, per-haps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in pray-er. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differ-ently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV).
It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the re-sults will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
PRAYER How unfortunate are those who come to Me proposing their own solutions, when all they need to do is to bring Me their problems, their needs and requests. When you intercede for one who is ailing, it is enough for you to say to Me: “Lord, the one whom Thou lovest is sick.” Leave all the rest to my most loving Heart. If you ask for a cure or healing, do so with such confi-dence in My love that your faith is ready to embrace My response to your prayer in whatever form it takes. (From In Sinu Jesu)

Blessings Laura Story We pray for blessings, We pray for peace, Comfort for family, protection while we sleep. We pray for healing, for prosperity. We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering. All the while, You hear each spoken need. Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things 'Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops? What if Your healing comes through tears? What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes To know You're near? What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise? We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear, We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near. We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love, As if every promise from Your Word is not enough. All the while, You hear each desperate plea And long that we'd have faith to believe.

Fr. Fred shared a beautiful song by Laura Story in his Flocknote of August 8. He thought it was very appro-priate for the times we are living in. If you missed Father’s message, below are the lyrics, and if you wish to listen to the song, you can go to:

(Tomado de In Sinu Jesu)
